FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTY TWO
(I/C)
The party walked the series of five rooms: Changing room, bath room, mural room, pedestal room, and steam room. Once sure they were alone, they decided to make the area secure before settling down for dinner and eventually rest. Back in the changing room, Wyn started by shoving the fallen cabinet over by the doorway. “I will move dis cabinet in front of dis door. I tink we cen set up ourselves in de mural room, so I put de cabinet in front of de hole filled door to warn us if someting comes into dis room.”
"Hey Swamp Thing,” Lannis commented from the steam room. “I can't hide in the cabinet if it's in front of the door.” He had the Rod of Ishtari out and was adjusting the steam levels in the room, practicing on raising them until the place was pretty much obscured as well as lowering them until they were barely wisps coming from the vents.
Giving the pedestal room a wide berth, Brendon eventually dropped his pack in the Mural chamber and proceeded to unbuckle his weapon belt as well. “Does no one find it a bit humorous,” he asked, “that our group had the mention of fire and the title of captain…only to have the hobs actually have a Captain and set fire on us?”
“Um…gods I can’t even begin to unpack that word salad you just spilled over there, Peg Leg Pete.” Lannis laid his staff against the wall and doffed his hat, swapping it for the blue one and trying to look up at it. “But hey, you go ahead and show us some more how home schooling is superior to whatever the rest of us has had.”
“Leave him alone,” Wyn said, glancing at the pink pedestal. “Offop, do you tink we could recharge de rod? Maybe dere be some writing in de pedestal room dat would give a hint on how to do it.”
Pushing himself away from the wall, Lannis gave an absent shrug and went to go look. “I'll check, but don't get your hopes up in this stupid castle."
Snapping his fingers, Wyn also took off his pack and coin pouch. “Oh, en anyone dat touches or examines de pedestal should make sure ye don’t have any money on ye… don’t want anodder situation like du Lac went through.”
“Hence why I’ll let you two monkey around with that,” Brendon shrugged.
Giving an absent glance in the room as the wizard and elf went in to look around, Kovid also took off his equipment and then started unlacing his armor. “By Thor,” he swore. “That was a long day.”
As the rest of the party began to eat, Abraxas had gone into the steam room and taking one of his spikes, jammed it under the door and then tapped it in place. He then went back to the Mural room and joined the others in eating dinner. "Señora Lyroneidos,” he asked the Cleric, “I would muy mucho gusto... uh... ve-ry much like - uno de los Ban-dah-jes por cuando we rest tonight, if possible? Tengo mucho dolor para our fightings hoy.”
Stuffing a bite into his mouth, Kovid nodded, agreeing. “Aye lass I would happily sleep with one of the bandages. Much appreciated!”
“I figured that. Between you 2 and I we’re pretty messed up.” She opened Abraxas’ pack and fished them out. “You first, big guy,” she addressed the Fighter. “Usual sleeping arrangements? I feel like it’s been so long since we’ve slept - like a few weeks. Spell people usually first or last?”
“That and then some,” Kovid said. “Let’s do like we had done a few months ago..er..days ago, sorry, and just push it longer so everyone can get a good rest.”
“Well, that was an intense waste of my time,” Lannis walked back in and sat down, daintily unwrapping some food and eating it. “Stupid castle, stupid no recharge the Rod.”
“How many charges left?”
“Six.”
The elf looked around and also went to eat. “Wyn cen take first watch if someone wants ta join him.”
“Yo will watch primero con tu, Señor Wyndows. Amigos, si we get in trouble, we can always hide in el chamber donde we found Señor Kookaburra's hammer. En el Gorgon's cara."
“Or we can just try not to get in any trouble, you know?”
“Si. Let’s see that. Mierda en uno mano y try en el otro, and see which one se llena primero.”
“You are a very negative person,” Lannis retorted.
“Everyone needs rest, it’s fairly early, and there aren’t many things left to find us,” Kovid suggested. “My 2 coppers, we do 3 watches and the middle two who are stuck doing it, just keep resting. The other 4 of us should be up and frankly, my straps and equipment is 3 weeks of hard use out of Specularum and could use some TLC.”
The party agreed and after Lyra made sure the worst of the hurts on her, Kovid, and Abraxas were bandages up by the Sclepian bandages, the group settled down to rest. Wyn and Abraxas were first and the two of them talked quietly throughout the night (1 WMC: Red/Black 4), eventually weariness prompted them to awaken Brendon and Kovid who took over. The two of them checked the outer doors repeatedly (1 WMC: Red/Black 1: D3: Orange2:1 – Ghouls).
It was sometime into the middle of their watch that they could hear movement outside through the door in the Changing room. Some snarling and slavering, followed by some ripping and chewing sounds. Some sniffing followed (multiple dead bodies, -4 on sense check: Black 13 – no!) and then after some more eating sounds, the group of maybe 4 or 5 personages moved away, heading west. The two of them looked at each other and let out a shaky breath, listening with extra care but the undead never came back.
“Thank Thor for the dead gorilla,” Kovid muttered.
“I’m sure if Thor was here, he’d say you’re welcome for the dead gorilla,” Brendon deadpanned.
They returned and after some time, woke up Lyra and Lannis. The Cleric looked over at the wizard and shook her head. “Seriously? I’m stuck with you on watch? This was a poorly planned and thought out system,” she groused.
“Don’t throw a shoe, alright?” He replied. “All we have to do is listen and keep each other company while I run through every iteration of horse that I know.”
“I hate you.”
“I know. I know. Mount, charger, cob, draft horse, carthorse…”
“Do you have any idea how annoying you can be sometimes?” she asked.
“I’ve never thought of it,” he replied. “Packhorse, racehorse, pony, foal, colt, stallion…”
“Seriously, knock it off.”
“Your wish is my command. Gelding, mare, filly, nag, hack…”
“I am going to use a share of my reward money to have a large imposing man punch you in the face every day after breakfast for a month. Trust me.”
“Of course you are. Bronco, moke, steed, jade.”
“Lannis. Stop.”
He smiled and resumed his watch (1 WMC: Red/ Black 2), but the rest of the time was without issue. Eventually Wyn and Abraxas woke up and the 4 of them broke their fast as well as prepared their spells for the day. They took Kovid’s advice and fixed the odd holes, rips, tears, and broken bits of strapping and buckles that 3 weeks of travel had on their gear (1 WMC: Red/Black 6). Eventually though the others woke up and the party was very refreshed (Lannis heal 2, Lyra heal 8, Wyn heal 2, Abraxas heal 8, Brendon heal 3, and Kovid heal 12). Most everyone had eaten their standard or iron rations, leaving the elven rations for another time.
“Ok!” Kovid clapped his hands together. “We have a late start, but I think we needed it. There is a lab upstairs with a number of healing potions waiting for us. We could go wash the bandages now if we wanted to. And I know the ghouls were out wandering about last night, but it is interesting to note the hobs and orcs, if they did, did not come down this way.”
“Rotting gorilla does a great job on disguising our presence,” Lyra noted.
“Speak for yourself,” Lannis retorted. “You are pretty ripe.”
“Monsieur Offop, Please.” Wyn looked around. “So, wot is de plan for today?”
Time now is Day 11, 10:00 AM
