PBEM - Episode 506. Scry, Brew, and Ghouls.

FIVE HUNDRED SIX

(I/C)

Holding the tome out for Lannis who took it with ill grace and a grumble, Wyn gave another world weary sigh and said, “Monsieur Offop, cen ye make sense of dis book? I know dis might surprise you, but dere not be much alchemical practices in de swamp…. Unless ye count my Mawmaw’s crawdad gumbo recipe.

Lyra moved forward to take the book, “Or… I’ll read it if you CANT read it Lannis. Don’t feel bad if it’s too hard for you.

The elf continued on, “Oh, to ‘ave a home cooked meal again… dere be a certain magic in it all by itself. I tink miss now more en more…”

From the door, Brendon suggested, “Lass, see if can make an anti paralytic potion. It would come in handy down the hall over there or see it can make a poison for my empty diffuser.”

Holding it to his chest, Lannis’ narrowed his eyes and retorted, "Of course I can read the book.  Just tell it to make healing potions though, we need those more than anything else, doesn't matter how not paralyzed you are if all your bones are in the wrong place.”

Lyra curled one finger and flicked the Wizard in the ear. “Just read the damn book. It can’t hurt to know what else can be made. I agree we need health potions but maybe they have something juicy in there.”

“Are ye gonna show off ye big brain by readin de book, or no? I’m sure Priestess could do it iffin ye be too busy.”

“Fine, fine, fine,” The Wizard opened the book and began scanning it (<Int Check, Pink 7), muttering to himself as he went through the cramped handwriting. “Hey  Sarah, you can even read?"

Nudging the Cleric in the ribs, Brendon chuckled and said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if your golem slammed Lannis into the wall?”

Giving a deep frown and squinted glare, Lannis shook his head and answered, "And we're back here again, good"

The Scout held his hands up placatingly, “I’m not wishing you harm, but it would be funny.”

“Hmmm. As if.”

“Senor Language, por favor look for recipes for lots of potions. Inivisibility, Giant Growth, Giant Strength, Haste, Flying, Healing, Extra Healing, Gaseous Form, Control Undead, Gnome Fire.”

“Slow down there, Gunga-Din. Some of those require some pretty rare ingredients so let’s do this correctly, ok?”

Lannis went through the available recipes and the group went over the shelves, cross referencing what was there and what was possible to be made. It took some time (2 turns) but at the end of the day the available reagents cross references with the recipes revealed that some items could be made. “So,” Lannis ticked off the possibilities one finger at time. “Invisibility, Giant Growth, Haste, and Gaseous Form are a no go. There’s enough stuff to make 2-4 Giant Strengths and 2-4 Flying, 5-10 Healing potions, perhaps 1 more potion of Control Undead.”

“What about Extra Healing?” Brendon asked.

Lannis shrugged, “We’d need fruit, which there isn’t any here, but if we had, we could make 2-4 Extra Healing potions with what’s left.”

“Can we make all 5-10 Healing potions at once?”

The Wizard shook his head. “No, it’s all batch driven and this is a nice alchemical system, but it has to process slowly and in step. Most attempt at a given time is 6, and assume there might be waste. So if it was healing potions – we can make 2 sets, one of 6 and one of 4. And then at the end of the day, we might end up with 3, 4, 5 ,or 6 from the first batch, and 2, 3, or 4 from the second batch.”

Lyra nodded, “And whatever we decide, I have to give exact directions to the golem and that’s what the shorthand notes on the wall are for, to help me and Lannis do this right.”

“And again,” the Wizard said, “Whatever we choose – its 12-14 hours brewing time, and I still think we should do healing. Or Extra healing if there’s a magic elven orange tree or strawberry patch hidden in some room somewhere.” He stretched. “Let’s make a choice and then let's get those ghouls next or check the throne room.”

Kovid rubbed his hands together, "Ghoul hunting? Great."
