PBEM, Episode 93 - Kill Grilljax, There and Back Again

The party needed to regroup and go through their belongings found and lost. And this was the end of Grilljax and the breaking of the kobold power bloc on the south end of the lower level. However, there was a wrinkle to come up next and it sort of broke the group in RL and on Discord.Read on to learn more

(I/C)
“Let’s go folks,” Kovid said with a grunt, “Lotta angry-ness coming our way and I’m naked and hurtin.”

Going to the east door, Wyn said, “Yous all comin? We gotta get outta here."

“Uno momento, por favor!” Abraxas stepped back up the steps, bringing his bag of gore out of his backpack and swinging it around. “Hope they cannot see in the dark amigos. Hope the statues are as big of blockheads as they seem.” Grabbing the back end of the sack, he swung it up and dumped the gore all over the middle of the steps. “Hokay, dis is disgusting. I was saving this for los Lobos, but this is as good a use.” From upstairs he could hear the statues beating on the door (>Teal 16, 1d6 Structural Damage: Green 3), the timber shaking and splintering. A look also showed the armor had been turned into slime the same thing was starting to happen to the bottom of the door. Heading back down to regroup with the party, he commented, :Ah see, those bath oils would have worked really well here. Out we go.”

“Lannis if you be so kind to give me a torch, I can scout ahead,” Brendon offered, opening the door and glancing back.

The Magic User shook his head and motioned the scout forward. “I don’t think we have time for that. Let’s go.”

The group moved on at a loping jog down the long cool hall that they had been in yesterday, the Fighter chuckling, “Be careful SeƱor Kovarned, es muy peligroso. Too bad there is no such thing as an armor made of hammers, eh? Ha ha! But no, serioso, tu necessitas armor ahora. Let's go get that chainmail."

The party made their way down the long hall, turned the corner south and then took stairs up and past the hall with the food. They continued on, echoes behind them of god only knows what (WMC: Reb/Black 5) as they kept up the speed to the sitting room. Once there Kovid and Abraxas opened the east door to the Ballista room while Lannis opened the door out of the castle and lit an incense, leaving it burning just outside. With the chainmail in hand, the group reclosed the door and then continued on their way, towing the iron chest, Jowass, and Grilljax.

They went east and then north past the library and storeroom, paused long enough to listen to the door down and satisfied it was quiet, took the stairs down to the next door, and then past the lower barracks and onward south down the steps to the Catacombs. Once here the air was sickly sweet with the stench of corruption as we moved on, scattering some rats and bugs with our lantern light who were feeding on the dead ape and stirges. Eventually we stopped at the Ishtari rooms and again, once a fast listen to verify no one was in there we made our way inside the changing room and then shut the door behind us, finally able to rest and relax.

“Holy…Shit.”

“You can say that again.”

“Senor,” Abraxas dropped Jowass with little fanfare to the stone floor and then rooted around his bag for the last healing potion. “For you, Senor Dorfington.”

“Ugh, thanks my friend.” Kovid popped the top and drank in deep (Heal 1d6 Damage, White 2 – Heal 2) and he looked marginally better, but not much. “These potions we got suck.” He sat down and pulled out the chainmail, measuring it against himself. “I’m going to need an hour to get this down to size,” he said, going through his dwarven tools and began working the links loose one at a time.

“I have another heal if anyone needs,” Lyra said, sitting back and stretching. Glancing at Jowass she frowned, “Maybe we can interrogate the kobold when we’re safer too. Trust me, I’d love to watch Kovid smash his face in too.”

From his work on the armor, the dwarf chimed in, “Tell me when!”

“We carried him this far, let’s at least go through the motion of asking him questions,” Lannis offered.

“Well, you have about an hour left before the spell ends,” Lyra offered.

“Perfect.”

‘Speaking of carrying things,” Wyn lowered Grilljax to the ground and proceeded to look the kobold shaman over. “Let us zee wot this vermin ‘ad on him.” He proceeded to take piece by piece off the kobold, the garments stained in blood and the kobold looking small under his vestments. The SKULL [15] he was wearing as a hat had a series of runes and glyphs on the underside that shimmered in the lantern light. He was also wearing a leather thong necklace that had a gold and jade elven made pendant on it.

Looking it over (Thief Int >12, no roll) Brendon commented, “That’s nice – worth 150 crowns to the right buyer.” (Jade/Gold pendant 150 cr [2])

Further in Grilljax possession was an IRON DAGGER [10] well made and a small pouch with 30 nobles.

“Hooray, treasure! Cervezas for all!” Abraxas gave the from Jowass a shove. “Let us see what this pendejo has.” He proceeded to rip Jowass’ shirt, jerkin, and even pants off of him, tossing the garments aside but until he had searched them with care. Finding another IRON DAGGER [10] and 45 more nobles, inside the kobold’s vest pocket was a potion bottle that Abraxas held up and sounded out the words carefully, “Potion…of…Hoggrey…no, O..O…O-Ger…Ogre! OGRE! Potion of Ogre…Strength. Senor, it is a potion of Ogre Strength!”

“Damn!” Kovid said. “Glad he never had a chance to drink it.”

“You’re welcome!” Lyra smiled.

Taking the iron chest he had pulled out from under Grilljax’ chair, Brendon sighed and looked it over. “Ok…well, it is locked, and there is a needle right here just over the lock. No key on Grilljax?”

“No Monsieur, I did not see one.”

“No bother…Let me just…try and remove this…”Brendon took out his thieves tools and using a small pliers and a blocking cork, worked on the needle (<Remove Trap, Red 18) until it slipped out and he dropped it to the floor. “Done!” The needle had a small glass ampule in the middle of it and there was a speck of something green inside it. “Um…” he looked closer, “This is a needle trap, with a breakable thin glass wall in the middle, and that is a green slime. Screw this up, and you are injected with green slime!”

“What a dickweed,” Lannis sighed. “Glad we burned all the slime. No more of that shit.”

“Um, Lannis?” Lyra asked. “One of them threw a vial of it at Kovid so they don’t not have.”

“Sure, sure. But they don’t have a large amount of it! We burned it all!”

“Um, didn’t we just put a big piece of armor with slime on it outside their door that would also turn to slime? So didn’t we just give them a whole Aine blessed amount of slime?”

The Magic User frowned. The elf scowled. The dwarf bristled. Brendon and Abraxas looked at one another and sighed. “I fucking hate kobolds.”

Using his tools, Brendon worked his picks into the chest lock (>Open Locks +10 bonus, Red 09) and the top popped open with a creak. Inside were 4 potion vials, three vellum scrolls rolled up, a thin bag with 20 gold crowns within and three small nicely cut rubies. Picking one up, Brendon looked it over (Thief Int>12, no roll), “Very nice. Each of these could be worth 50 crowns."

Meanwhile Lannis was looking through the scrolls and potions. “Well, scrolls are magic user scrolls, so good for us, Wyn!”

“Wot do zay say?”

“Hmm…Scroll of Read Languages, Scroll of Sleep, and Scroll of Levitate!”

“Tres bein! And zee potions?”

“Hmmm. Potion of Healing. Potion of Healing. Potion of Healing…and …”

“Potion of Healing, Senor?” Abraxas asked.

“Surprisingly no. Potion of Control Undead!”

“Ah! And we know where to find some who were running away.”

(WMC: Red/Black 6 – for rest of hour Kovid worked on armor). The party frittered away time, looking over the items we had gotten, splitting up coins and discussing who would get what, and waiting for Kovid to finish his armor as well as discussing what we would ask Jowass as soon as the spell ended.

Taking the chainmail, Kovid slipped it over his head and let it hang low, smiling as he finished his adjustments (Add CHAINMAIL [400] to character sheet and adjust AC to 14). “All right! We’re good now. Let’s go ask Jowass some hammering questions, hmm?”
