PBEM, Episode 73 - Abraxas, Rest, Dead Bodies

The player running the Fighter was very demoralized at this point and was unhappy with the game. B/X is not his normal style of D&D and this game with its slow turns made him feel picked on and useless being blinded. The rest of the group tried to work around his dismay and eventually he did snap back and get into it again. But it was a rough couple of days.

SEVENTY THREE

(I/C)
Lannis went through the belongings we had uncovered from the Adepts and he proceeded to hand them out. He took a FLASK OF OIL (1) for himself, Lyra refilled her stones back up to 10 and was given the GOLD LIZARD HOLY SYMBOL with 2 rubies (2), Kovid took a HEALING POTION and drank it (Heal 1d6: red/Black 5 – Heal 5!) a FLASK OF OIL (1) and 3 TORCHES (3), Brendon took a CLUB (20) the POTION OF INVISIBILITY (5) a small POUCH OF COLORFUL STONES (10) and 3 SLINGS (3), and Abraxas was given the last HEALING POTION (5). As for the 3 loose large pouches, Wyn took them and glanced south.

“Quickly, quickly, gather what you need. We need to get going, we don't want the creature to escape, and if we want to rest doing it here is ill advised. I know this because I advise against it, and I am very smart."

Abraxas sighed. "Perhaps you should just leave me at the barracks. I really can not do much of anything in my current state. I am, how you say.... useless... until my sight comes back, if it comes back. Dragging me along with you, where we are guaranteed to get into a fight, I can only be a hindrance. I might hit one of you, or cause a delay in action. It'd be best to just leave me instead of hurting the group's chances."

Brendon shook his head, “Not for nothin Doc, you’re still a bull”.

“Oui! Si!” Wyn echoed, “Monsieur Salazar, you are, 'ow do you say eet... a 'kill-ing ma-chine'. I tink you cen 'old you're own against any of deze gobs, 'obs, kobs, or salabs, even if you cen not see dem. Eef you feel eet be better for you ta stay away from de part-tee till it wears off, dough, I cen not drag you... you too big, mon ami! We should at least move you to dee barracks... leavin you by all dee dead bodies is not smart.”

“I agree, we should get out of here, head back to the Barracks for now,” Lyra looked troubled. “While I agree staying here for too long isn’t wise we also can’t leave Abraxas. If we’re heading out maybe we should change up our formation? I can help hold up and guide him until he gets his vision back, but I’m going to need someone to watch my back.”

“We can’t stay here and I’m not fine with just dumping Abraxas anywhere. Plus there’s a Froggy just waiting out there for us.” Kovid smacked his hammer into his free hand.

“It’s a salamander,” Lyra said. “Admittedly, a really BIG 5’ tall salamander that walks around like a man does, but it is in no way a frog.”

“Seemed froggy to me,” Lannis shrugged. “I would trust Kovid in this.”

“As one ‘ho come from ze swamp, I cannot agree wit’ ya.” Wyn offered.

“That’s ok,” Kovid said shouldering his backpack and dousing the lantern. Holding the torch higher he headed towards the door. “It’s still a froggy to me. Let’s go frog hunting.”

The group made their way to the door where they looked out at the hall, and seeing the dead bodies and little more. Moving Silently with Brendon (>Move Silently, Red 69) taking the lead and the rest of the group following (>Move Silently -2 penalty, Teal 4) they shuffled into the hall and headed south. On the way Wyn said, “Wait, si’l vous plait.” And dashed into the storage room. He emerged a minute later with the three pouches now filled with loose grain. He handed a POUCH OF GRAIN (25) to Brendon, Kovid, and kept one for himself. “To ‘elp us in order to find zee invisible Adept, no?”

“Good idea,” Brendon offered, “Wish I’d have thought of it.”

Having a loose handful as well, he waited for the group to go through the door back down on the right hand side of the hall towards the Barracks, and then laid a bunch at the top. Once the door was closed he used the last of the loose grain to make a line on the floor as well on the inside of the door to further show if anyone passed through here. The group went slow, Lyra guiding Abraxas who was staring silently ahead, a sad expression on his face.

Once down below Brendon listened hard to the door (<Hear Noise, Red 14) hearing nothing. The group went through with care and ended up back in the hall by the lower Barracks. They approached the door, and once sure that no one had opened it before, made their way inside where they took a moment to regroup. “Well, the dead elves are still in here.” Lannis offered.

“Thanks, Senor.” Abraxas chuckled sardonically, “I did not need to know.” He turned his head to the side as if hearing something and then said, “What?”

“No one said anything, Doc.”

“Oh…I was sure…”

Wyn and Kovid went back to the door and listened again. “Ok,” the dwarf offered, “Wyn and I are going to check the hall for the Froggy…”

“Salamander,” Wyn offered.

“Whatever. Either way, we’ll check it out, you stay here.”

“Wait for our knock, The sun will come out, manana, ok?”

“Just hurry and be safe,” the Magic User offered, taking Kovid’s lantern back and spending a minute to relight it.

The two of them left the now spent torch and went out into the hall, senses alive as they strained their hearing and when the door shut – their infravision kicked in. “Which way?” Kovid asked.

Kovid (=Wis check, Yellow 13) and Wyn (<Wis check +2 elf, Orange 8) both stood there and listened, looked, and smelled. There was a faint discoloration north of here at the extreme limit of their vision at the top of the stairs. “Zat way.” Nodding, they walked slowly, making their way up the steps one and a time until they arrived at the top.

Where they found the red robe discarded here still faintly warm from the residual fading body heat of the Adept who had worn it. Wyn bent down and rifled through the folds finding nothing of interest and Kovid noted, “Froggy bastard took his torch and tinder box with him.”

“Hmm..” At that point the two of them each caught a faint aroma, very faint, of something burnt. “Let’s look.” The two of them continued to creep north to the corner and then making sure the door on the east was still closed and undisturbed, they looked to the west. In the distance at the limit of their infravision, they could make out some very warm, almost hot spots on the floor, wall, and ceiling. “Liitle prick burned the web,” Wyn cursed.

“So he’s gone?”

“I would say yes. Off to tell his betters of us and what we did.”

“Bad riddance to shitty frogs.” Kovid pointed back the way they came. “Let’s go back.” Before going they listened VERY HARD and looked around (no screwing you around – there is nothing here – invisible guy is gone – Lol) and once sure they were alone, the dwarf and elf headed back to the Lower Barracks.

Meanwhile, Abraxas had been sitting there, tilting his head as if hearing something for a bit. Suddenly he had a nauseous look. Looking startled and shaking a bit he rocked slightly then stood up. “Hokay, we should definitely leave. Like now. Like as fast as possible. We have done enough Adventuring. Corfart's Curses come to me now.  Kovidses, are you near? Corfardit's ghost has spoken, and he is piss'ed. We should pack up and count our bles...”

He stopped, brows furrowing as he grew angrier. “But, ho, maybe he is not piss'ed. Maybe he is ascare'ed.”

“What the fuck is he going on about?” Lannis asked.

“Doc? You’re scaring your friends, ok?” Brendon added.

“Shh,” Lyra scolded. “Abraxas? Are you saying you heard something? Something from Corfard?”

“Si! A bit because I was blind, but it is he! Speaking in my head!”

“Sounds loco,” Lannis said.

“No! It is true! I have arm wrestled men when they are about to lose, they strike out with words of the most horrid nature. They get desperate in those moments. We may be close to ending it. No, Mis Amigos, we MUST press on! Robs, Bobs, Hobs, Gobs, and Gods be damn'ed! As soon as I have my sight again, we should push the advance on these villanos! Strike them down! ¡Asesinato todos Villanos! Time for Corfark to get Core-Fuck'ed!.... as soon as I can see again."

Lyra patted the Fighter on the shoulder. “Good for you! I’m with you on that! Well, I for one think we should wait until you can see again before we do something stupid like walk around here.”

“I agree with the woman,” the magic user offered.

“You will see, Senor Offthputz! You will see! As will I soon I hope.”

As he was wrapping up both Kovid and Wyn came in and joined them and the group shared all they had learned with one another.

Time now is 11:36
(OOC)
Abraxas needs 80 minutes before the spell ends. Hole up here is certainly doable – and it would only be 1 WMC. Party’s choice.
