PBEM - Episode 401. Watchtower, Harpies, and Heroics.

Player running the Fighter was adamant that he was going to chase and stop Greisse the harpy no matter what and there was quite a bit of back and forth on how he was going to achieve it. And to add to the heroic effect, the player running the Magic User was going to burn another permanent spell from his book if he had the chance.

Riding a harpy one hand wrapped around her leg while you are both gliding down a set of dark stairs counts as bad assed heroism to me.

Follows:

FOUR HUNDRED ONE

(I/C)

(Unconscious dwarf: 1d4+1 rounds: Green 3+1 = 4 rounds out)

Blocking a blow from the undead, Lannis shouted to Lyra, "Hey Onyx, I didn't wake you up so you could not turn these skeletons. Clop clop! I've got a plan!"

Abraxas glanced down the stairs worriedly as he could hear the harpy taking flight and making her escape. "SeƱora, si you will?"

“On it!” Lyra said, pulling her holy symbol out and bringing it up. “Don’t look at any flowers Kovid! There are no flowers!” From down the steps we only heard gurgling noises.

“That’s promising!” Lannis remarked.

“Aine! By your might and will, My Goddess. TURN!!” Her holy symbol flared to bright white light, an unseen wind blew behind her, sending her skirts and hair whipping wildly about. She focused her will on the three skeletons on the western half of the room and with an unseen flexing, projected her goddess’s will. The rippling light slammed into the undead, sent them to quiver a bit (2d6 hd: White 1+5=6), and then they all made a groaning creak…and exploded! Bits of bone grit and the odd chunk ricocheted about the chamber, peppering the Fighter, Scout, and Magic User. “You’re welcome!”

Pulling out his stone dagger, Abraxas charged at the steps, taking them in a controlled skipping fall, hand cupping the center column as he raced to the bottom in an effort to get to the Harpy in time. "Let's finish ese Hardpies, amigos. Mas rapido. Ahora!"

Blocking a wicked swing at his face from the undead’s blade, Wyn said, “You guys gonna ‘elp de dwarf? I’m pretty busy wit dis skeleton ‘ere.”

Running across the chamber to help, Brendon called back, “Hang on brutha I’ll be right there!”

Pulling out his spellbook and flipping to the right page, Lannis was already charging for the hole..but not the head of the stairs. “Good job Jiroumaru, now get to galloping I'm going to need your help sooooooooooon…”, and the Magic User jumped down the stairs (<BX Baby Dex, jump down the steps to save time, Pink 3 – yes!). His form over the lip was perfect and he plummeted almost 11 feet before hitting the stairs, tucking his shoulder in an effort to control his fall and roll (1d6 Damage, Pink 5). “OW fuck. Fuck. Fuck!” (1-3 Keep book, 4-6 Lose book: Pink 4). However he rolled too far and the spellbook slipped from his hands and skittered down the steps just out of reach.

Upstairs Wyn tore into the remaining skellie (>+6 to hit, Orange 9), his sword poking in and out, notching bone and rattling them loose (1d6+2 Damage, Red 5+2=7 Damage!). The goblin staggered from the assault and threatened to fall apart. At this point Brendon arrived and the Scout took to hacking down at the undead (>+4 to hit, Red 10), his enchanted blade adding just the right amount of force to finish tearing the horror apart (1d6+1 Damage, Red 2+1=3 Damage and killed!).

Abraxas heard Lannis strike the ground just behind him. The Fighter leapt over the fallen dwarf and grabbed the railing, spinning his body around and facing west just as the harpy was flying out of the room. “Not on MY watch, Pendejo!” he roared and JUMPED, dagger flashing, hands reaching, hoping to grab Greisse before she could escape (<BX Baby, -2 Dex jump to grapple, Blue 4 – yes!). One hand reached out and gripped her high on her thigh where the flesh transitioned from feathery lower quarters to ridged talon legs, while his other flared up and in an overhand swing (>+7 to hit, +2 BX baby, Blue 12), drove the stone dagger into the harpy’s side and tore down (1d4+3 Damage, Blue 2+3=5 Damage!).

She shrieked and kicked out, wings spread, dragging her and Abraxas forward as the Fighter reached back and struck her a second time! (Extra attack, <+7 to hit, Purple 3) His next assaults were not as effective as his earlier one was, but it was enough to make her scream at him to “LET GO!” She kicked out with one sharpened talon foot (<+4 to hit, White 11), ripping through his armor but only raising sparks. Another shove off with her claws (<+4 to hit, White 12), had the same effect. By this time she was hopping and gliding, wings straining, screaming, “GET OFF ME!!!” as she swung the Theystran Warhammer around and behind her (=+5 to hit, Black 13), where it connected with a CLANG, whacking the Fighter in the bicep and ribs (1d8+1 Damage, Red/Black 3+1 = Take 4 Damage!).

(Combative Strength check, looking to break the hold: Abraxas Blue 9 (Under 9) vs Greisse Green 2 (under 10) – too close). Abraxas grunted from the hit but refused to let go, holding on desperately and stabbing again and again as the two of them flew down the long dark 40’ flight of stairs, the Fighter’s legs and feet slamming into the steps , the harpy pitching left and right rebounding off the side walls, cursing and screaming at one another.

(Initiative: 6 vs 6 tie, reroll. Party Steel 4 vs Greisse Red/Black 3)

Lannis rolled to hit feet, snatched his book off the floor, and ran to the stairs where he looked down into the gloom, hearing the harpy and the Fighter as they raced to the bottom. ”Oh no you don’t! ZU!” he read the spell right from his grimoire, the pages burning away, and shaped it a pink globe that he SHOVED down into the gloom. “HANG ON, ABRAXAS!” he cried out. (Sleep 4d4 hd: 3+1+3+2 = 9)

And towards the bottom of the stairs, Griesse fell asleep, the harpy dropping out of the air at full flight speed, smashing both her and Abraxas down the last few steps to the floor where they rolled to a stop at the corner (1d6 falling damage: White 5): her snoring and upside down, Abraxas groaning in pain but still holding on to his dagger. Wiping blood from his face where he had broken his nose, he raised his dagger up and slashed it across the harpy’s throat as she slept. In the dimmest light he watched her eyes open in panic and then close in death, Abraxas waited until he was sure she was dead, before sitting down in a bone weary heap and tried to catch his breath.

Time now is Day 9, 2:00 PM

(OOC)

Real great heroic ass kicking turn and a half guys. Abraxas you are at the bottom of the long steps, just outside of what was the troglodyte guard room. Lannis you are up in the lower watchtower where Kovid is (still out for 2 and a half more minutes). Wyn, Brendon, and Lyra, you are all up at the upper watchtower, hearing the sounds of the battle echoing up from below. It sounds good!

XP Monsters: 2 harpies @ 975 each divided

5 Skeletons @ 65 each divided

Wyn and Kovid – 379 xp

Brendon – 394 xp

Lyra – 429 xp

Abraxas – 439 xp

Lannis – 515 xp

We are pretty beat up and spread out. What’s the plan?
