PBEM - Episode 522. Going after the Last Mongrelman

FIVE HUNDRED TWENTY TWO

(I/C)

Lyra looked around and snapped her fingers, heading to the hall with Kovid. “I love the lock them in the room and never open the fucking door again plan.”

The dwarf nodded, feeling time slipping away and the potion’s effectiveness. “Okay so now we like the lock’em in the room plan?”

Wyn nodded, looking around the area. “Oui! So… we close de door en tie a rope to dis knob en de knob to de west. Den we wait to see what happens in dere.”

“I have rope,” Brendon offered, taking out the last coil of 50’. “Tell me what you need?”

"Fine by me, the ghouls can wait in there forever,” Lannis said pointing, heading back to Mirabellis’ chamber. “But Sebastian sure can't, we should watch the hallway too, put something noisy down in case it tries to go around."

Taking the end of the rope, Wyn asked, “What ye all say?”

Abraxas shook his head, taking the business end of the rope and tossing the coil back to Brendon. He pointed to the heavy 4 poster bed and suggested, "Let us let los monstros luchan por algun tiempo. Señor Weyen y Brendon, ayudo te con el puerto y el rope. Si yo move ese bed, podemos move en y out el room y tambien keep that Puerto,” he pointed to the Sanctuary door, “close'ed."

“Works for my ass,” Kovid said, “I’ll take care of the door, you tie it shut.” He turned to the two ghouls and said, “Mitch and Vincent, stay in here. If you see the mongrel, kill it.” He grabbed the edge of the door and held their gaze a few seconds longer and added, “Have a nice, erm… life boys,” and then closed the door.

Severing his visual connection to the ghouls.

Ending the potion.

They screamed their heads off inside, snarling and gnashing their teeth, howling out, “KEEEELLLL YOUUUU KKKAAAHHVIIIDDD!!!” as they hit the Sanctuary door HARD. The dwarf held the door closed and leaned back as Abraxas was wrapping the close end of the rope around the handle, the other end slithering into the bedroom as Brendon was wrapping the free end there around the bedframe and hauling on it.

“Damn! That pissed them off fast!”

(Combative Str check Ghouls Black 2 (under 11) vs Kovid Yellow 9 (under 7))

The door pulled open, the ghouls straining and yanking and tugging, widening the gap, fingers coming through as Kovid was grunting and yanking the other way. “Rope fucking tied yet!?!”

“Trying!” Abraxas retorted, “Hold the door!”

“Aine DAMN it!” Lyra wrapped her own hands around the door and pulled along with Kovid (Adj Str score from Under 7 to Under 9), but the door was still opening.

“Mierda!” Abraxas dropped his attempts at a knot the rope and hauled off with the others, pulling the rope threaded through the handle and hoisting backwards (Adj Str score from Under 9 to Under 11 – tied). “Senor! I need some help!”

Lannis looked around and then pointed to Wyn. “He must mean you, Cocheese.”

“Ya tink?” Wyn joined the others in the hall, reaching around them, eyes fixated on the ghouls, and tied the loose ends of the rope awkwardly around the others, knotting it in place (<Int check +2 elf, Orange 11). “Got it!”

“Still seems to be open a bit,” Lannis noted sarcastically. “And they are rather angry. Just spitballing here you know, being the supervisor and all…”

“You’re not MY supervisor!” Lyra grunted out.

“Monsieur Offop, please shut it.” Wyn raised his voice, “Monsieur Du Lac! Tighter please, si vous plait!”

“Aye, aye, Cap’n!” Brendon braced his legs against the bed frame and pulled the twist of ropes he had wrapped in place HARD (<Str check, +2 rope pirate, Red 2), the entire quivering line ginked and glinked, but inexorably drew the door to the Sanctuary closed, the ghouls snatching their fingers free before losing them. And the door then set in it jamb. “Now! Now!” Brendon leaned in and tied the entire mess off with a pair of quick square knots, holding the wrap of ropes in place.

The party all relaxed slightly, watching the door with care, the ghouls on the other side continuously beating at it. “So…it holding?” Wyn asked, “Oui? Or no?”

The group waited and then relaxed. “Yeah,” Kovid groaned. “We’re good.”

The howling of the enraged ghouls continued from the other side along with the bashing and beating on the door, but the ropes held and the door was closed. Looking around at the serious mound of dead orcs, Wyn gave a low whistle and cleared his throat, kneeling by Grimtoth first. “Ok! We did dat. What was we and Wyn will check de orcs. En Du Lac en I split de arrows we find.”

“Keep an eye for the other Mongrelman,” Lannis reminded the party.

Abraxas was looking through the dead, asking, "Anybody find algun Bolts por el Crossbow?"

(d4+d10: 1:10. 10/per. Time 9 = 90) The group spent a few minutes looking through the dead, finding come coin and other items of interest. There was 90 gold pieces, 2 potions of Healing, 1 potion of Extra Healing, 2 flasks of oil, 3 quarrels, 4 arrows, other assorted common orcish type of weaponry of no value or use, and on Grimtooth, was a set of boots elven in make but had been stretched out and relaced to fit a human or orc’s leg and calf. The symbology (Thief, no roll needed) matched the same symbology on the cloak that Brendon was wearing. “I dunno,” he mused, “I think these might have been part of a matched set, once upon a time. Ooo!” He smiled as his healing pulse went off (Cont heal, 2nd of 5: D4+1. Red 3+1=4, Heal 4!). “That was nice.”

It had been a few minutes and the party was discussing what they were going to do, the sounds of the ghouls screaming and carrying on fading into the background, when there was a change to it (Unseen combat: >+6, White 12. Black 8 and killed) as one of the ghouls yelled louder and in terror, followed by another voice deeper grunting and hitting. One ghoul grew silent and then (>+6, White 20- Critical, 10 Damage) another series of bone splintering blows.

“Ah…Mongrelman’s not hiding anymore,” Lannis noted.

(Unseen ghoul reply: <+2, 6, 11, 2…>+6, White 15. Red/Black 7 and killed!) The smashing sound of combat continued another half a minute before the ghoul was gurgling and gasping and then grew silent, followed by a wet ripping sound. There was no noise for a few seconds and then something tried to turn the knob, pull the door, and then stop when they realized the door did not open. We heard a heavy foot step move away twice..then again…then…nothing.

“I’m going on a limb here,” Lannis shrugged. “That the ghouls aren’t a problem…and Sebastian most likely is.”

“Only if we ever open that door,” Lyra pointed, “Or any of those doors. Ever again.”

“Don’t we need to get another brass ball?” Kovid said. “We can leave here right now and go get another brass ball. I think that might be best.”

“Damn,” Brendon sighed. “Killed 2 ghouls. All by itself.”
