PBEM - Episode 564. Dungeons...and Dragon.

FIVE HUNDRED SIXTY FOUR

(I/C)

"H'okay Amigos,” Abraxas whispered, eyes bright, Haste potion in his hand. “Es tiempo. Let us show ese Drogo, que sus tiempo es finito.”

“Hold on a sec,” Lyra said, motioning Wyn, Brendon, and Lannis closer. “You guys be safe, ok? Aine. Lets get another round of healing here. One for Wyn please?” (CLW 1d6+1, White 6+1=7, Wyn heal 7!) The elf gave a sigh and smiled. “One for Brendon,” (CLW 1d6+1, White 5+1=6, Brendon heal 6!) The Scout also gave a shudder and nodded in appreciation. “And Last, and maybe least, but seriously, one for Lannis. Please.” (CLW 1d6+1: Pink 4+1=5, Lannis heal 5!) And the Magic User also gave an awkward smirk and a thumbs up. Looking them all over, she took out her potion of Invulnerability and drank it down (Green 3+6=9, 9 turns – All random damage rolls are assumed the dice portion reads “1”). “Been nice knowing you boys!”

“Merci! …Praise…Aine…”

The dwarf took out his Corfard Statue and handed it to Lannis. “You guys will need this one,” The Magic User took it and then Kovid tilted his potion of Giant Growth back and swallowed it, feeling it burn inside. “Lord Thor hear me. Lady Theystra hear me. We need your blessings this day more than ever.” As he began to grow, he lifted his hammer and frowned. “Guide this hammer to strike true. Guide this party to victory. It’s dragon killing’ time.” (Yellow 2+6=8, 8 turns. Grow 2.5 times size including all equipment – Currently a bit over 10’ tall and a notch under a ton in weight)

“Whoa!” Abraxas chuckled, looking up. “Grande Senor.” He looked at his potion of Haste and smiled. “El Cottledgut y madre corren aqui y ahora! Hacemos amigos!" (Blue 4+6=10, 10 turns – Move double speed, +1 attack, +2 to AC) He seemed to blur a bit and then swiftly drew his Scythe and spun it. “Bueno!”

Brendon took out his potion of Giant Strength and drank it down, groaning as his muscles suddenly ached from deep within. He just felt…solid. (Red 5+6=11. 11 Turns! Strength is effectively a 19. +4 on all to hit and melee attacks) “Let’s do this.”

“Godspeed… mes… amis…,” Wyn bowed low, floating away to the east.

“Wait for us to go first,” Kovid advised. “You’ll know.”

“Oui! To… de… ballista!” Brendon and Lannis followed, the Magic User beginning to hum, a cadence while striding sounding off.

"One round more,” Lannis chanted, hand pumping as he walked, “another day another destiny.

On this never ending road to Corfard-y.

This dragon who seems to know our crimes

will surely breathe a second time.”

The other 3 waited until they saw them leave out the east door, Brendon closing it behind him. Abraxas tried to count off slowly, but his Haste potion had him skipping along too quick and he had to restart again and again.

Lannis was now singing and questioning as they walked the hall south to the waiting Ballista. “One more round before we storm, do I follow where Wyn goes, at the ballista of shooting? Shall I join the others there, while our ranks have been divided? Do I Dart or do I Magic missile? Will you stand near my dragon statues?”

Looking at the closed Double door, Brendon ran his hand along the center of it, listening and feeling for where it would be best for him to try and open it. “Post hoc, ergo propter hoc!” he muttered before turning back to help Lannis cock and load the machine.

Meanwhile the Magic User checked over the Ballista’s firing mechanism, satisfied it was all ready to go, still humming along the same tune, but holding the words out for now. As the hawser line was cinched back in place, he loaded the lone ballista bolt and smiled. Brendon placed one shoulder against the door and waited. Wyn took out his Hearstwood bow and loaded up the precious Dragon Slaying Arrow we had gotten from Mirabellis’ cache. He looked over at the other two and nodded.

“We… fuckin’… got… dis…”

Lannis continued his chanting, “One more round to a big battle, we will probably all be killed…”

Kovid had his arm on Abraxas shoulder and then nodded to the Fighter who shuddered a moment (Cont Heal 3rd pulse: white 3+1=4 – Heal 4!), smiling. “Just in time.”

And then the Dwarf used his giant sized shoulder to ram the door open.

The Magic User sang, “We think we're ready for this dragon boy, but will probably all bleed blood…”

The room was tremendous, larger than anything they had ever seen. The ceiling was a good 20, 30’ tall, the skylights blown out, just ragged glass shards hanging on to the lead frames. There were 2 fireplaces on the far wall, and a large stone vault was near the middle of the room where Corfard, the Red Dragon, was sitting a good 60 odd feet away, yellow eyes watching.

“Hi,” he growled, tail flicking towards some cables reaching from floor to ceiling.

The wizard’s distant voice could be heard chanting, “Tomorrow we'll discover what the Mike in heaven has in store…”

(Initiative Party Steel 2 vs Corfard Red/Black 5)

And then a cone of superheated fire burst from his open jaws and tore across the chamber, ripping through the door and passing over the entire party of three, the very air a raging inferno! (Normally, BX Fire Breath damage is the Dragon’s current HP total – which would be 80 pts if failed a save. BUT – the Corfard Statue Abraxas is carrying reduces that number to 1/10th!)

(Save vs Breath Weapon: Kovid >Yellow 12, Abraxas <Blue 5, Lyra >White 17 – Lyra and Kovid take 4, Abraxas take 8 Damage!)

As soon as the fires died away and the dragon stopped roaring, Corfard expected to see only ash there, and was (Surprise check: Red/Black 2 – yes! Does NOT set off trap!) shocked to see the 3 of them running into the room, weapons out, charging for him! “What in Tiamat’s name is THIS bullshit!?!” the dragon roared out.

“Allons-y,” Wyn mutterd.

Nodding to Lannis, the Scout rocked back and HIT the stuck double doors as hard as he could (Str check @ -6 penalty: =Red 13!!), the portal booming and then booming again before the ancient oak frames parted enough for the doors to blast open! “Toe pick!” He turned back to the Ballista and watched Lannis’ hand as he pointed, shifting the war machine with surprising ease into the position the Magic User wanted.

And as Brendon feathered it into position, seeing his friends charging heroically across the massive chamber, Lannis wrapped up his feverish song, “One more round, one more write up, ONE ROUND MORE!"

And fired.

(>Int +3, Creature Size bonus +4, +1 bless, Pink 17) The war machine gave forth a horrible loud THWOCK as the 7’ long sharp 35# ballista bolt ripped through the air with a tearing sound and BURIED itself into the dragon’ flank! (5d6 Damage: 6,6,5,2,2 = 21 Damage!!) Corfard roared in agony, looking down at the massive shaft sticking out of his body, and turned his gaze to the far end of the room. “You WORMS!!!”

And then Wyn fired his Heartswood bow, the Dragon Slaying Arrow streaking away (<+8 to hit, +3 Magic, +1 bless, Orange 2 – Sure shot reroll!!). It wobbled in the air, the shaft seeming to flex as the head rippled up and down, subtly shifting (<+8 to hit, +3 Magic, +1 bless, Orange 9 – Sure shot reroll number 2!!). The fletching caught a stray air current, giving it a faint spin as it twisted a bit and (>+8 to hit, +3 Magic,+1 bless, Green 14 – Yeah!!) plunged into Corfard’s neck, just above his chest. (1d6+3 x 2 Damage, Orange 5+3=8x2=16 – Take 16 Damage!!) And when it hit, it actually seemed to explode, knocking the dragon back onto his hind legs briefly, the impact striking Corfard with a force almost as devastating as the Ballista bolt was.

“I’ll kill ALL OF YOU!!!” He roared in fury!

(Initiative, Party Steel 2 vs Corfard Red/Black 3)

(Dragons in BX get 3 breath weapons – unless they suspect otherwise: 1-3 melee, 4-6 Breath. Knowing Abr/Kov/Lyr are not affected by his breath, if he was to breathe – it would be on the other 3. Red: 5 – Breath weapon on Bre/Lan/Wyn.)

And then Corfard let forth another mighty breath, setting the air itself on fire as the column of flame blew out into a cone and tore through the elf, wizard, and scout, the three of them screaming, the Ballista going up like a roman candle (Normally, BX Fire Breath damage is the Dragon’s current HP total – which would be 43 pts if failed a save. BUT – the Corfard Statue Lannis is carrying reduces that number to 1/10th!(rounded up always))

(Save vs Breath Weapon: Lannis =Pink 16, Wyn <Green 11, Brednon <Red 5, Lannis take 3 Damage, Wyn and Brendon take 5)

And again, as the flames and his breath died away, he thought they would be destroyed..but instead, they too were still standing! “How?! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!?!”

And by this time, the three warrior adventurers were just about in striking range!!

Time now is Day 13, 8:25 AM

Bottom of Round 2 – Abr and crew will be in melee range this round. What about the other 3? If you split up, whoever is NOT within 5’ of Lannis is not protected from Corfard’s Breath Weapon or Magic (yes, he has spells too). Great first round, crushed it!
