PBEM - Episode 552. Fire in the Garden

FIVE HUNDRED FIFTY TWO

(I/C)

Cursing, Brendon swapped to his sword and made ready to charge in. “Decapus! Get that shit out of your mouth, you don’t know the mother he was in!”

"Ahhhhh! Run friends!” Lannis bawled.

“Oh for fucks sake Lannis!” Preparing to run in as well, Lyra made sure Abraxas was fully vertical before adding, “Why are you always trying to die!?”

“Get to safety, lest we alert the Draaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgon!” His wailing took a higher tone as the Decapus slurped him up another few inches into its greedy maw. “I'll be fine, don't risk yourselves for me!"

Loading up another arrow, Wyn shook the bow back and forth twice, just to make sure it was working. “Merde! One of deze arrows HAS to hit...” He sighted, hoping that the Decapus was a large enough target that he wouldn’t hit the magic user and fired (>+8 to hit, +1 bless, Orange 14), the shaft striking and sticking this time (1d6 damage, Orange 2). “Bout damn time,” he groused as the menace continued to chew on Lannis.

Getting his Scythe at the ready, Abraxas called out, "Andale Amigos!” Tapping the dwarf, the scout, and the cleric, he suggested, “Voy a left y tu vayas derecho, si? Mueremos el Beast! Slash, Smash and Bash y no alto hasta Decampus vive no mas!"

Thumbs up, Kovid spun his Theystran Hammer and replied, "Si Big A, I'm on it." And then the 4 of them charged in. Abraxas and Brendon each took up space near the Decapus’ face, fighting through the waving tentacles in an effort to get close enough to strike the center mass and eye. Kovid went a bit around the far side of it, rolled low, and then came upon it, Hammer swinging.

Lyra lunged for the wizard, clasping his flailing hands until she got a grip. “Ugh, there’s like no calluses on them! It’s like holding a glove full of pudding.” Feet braced, she pulled, trying to free him, cajoling him, “Don’t just hang there; do something! Try smacking it!” Lannis kicked with his free foot as she pulled and the three others attacked, distracting the Decapus from its snack (<Str check, -4 penalty, White 4 – success!), and with a wet tearing sound, she managed to save the Magic User from being eaten. “Can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve saved you. Wow! That leg is..um..shouldn’t be seeing that much bone through the wounds, Lannis. Aine! A fast healing please, and douse him with some hydrogen peroxide while you’re at it, because – Wow! That’s going to get infected. (CLW 1d6+1: White 2+1=3 – Heal 3!) The wounds closed but his entire leg was a mass of half healed scabs and lumpy missing pieces of flesh.

Abraxas and Brendon were both striking at the creature’s face, the Fighter planting his Scythe hard and arcing the point forward where he could. The vines did what they were able to do to slow down the attacks but (<Bx Baby -2 Str check, called shot to the eye, Blue 1 – nice! More than half damage, blinded…>+8 to hit, +1 bless, +2 BX Baby, Blue 18!!) the Fighter performed a twisting arcing slashing swing that slithered through two blocking tentacles and struck the Decapus full on in the face, the monster hastily slamming its lid closed! (1d8+4 Damage, Blue 7+4=11 Damage and blind!) But Abraxas was so strong, his Scythe cut THROUGH the hardened plant lid and scoured the eye, sending about a pail full of yellowy eyeball ichor to rain around the Fighter as he yanked his weapon free.

“URGHHHAHHAHAHAH!!!” The plant screamed as Abraxas tried a followup attack (Extra attack, <+8 to hit, +1 bless, Teal 6) but was buffeted and knocked back and aside by the crazed gyrations of the tentacles. Lannis was trying to pull his Ishtari Rod out, teeth clenched as he hoped to drown out the deafening cries of the mortally wounded plant.

Brendon stabbed up, hanging on to the bottom of it (<+4 to hit, +1 bless, Red 2), hoping to keep himself from being hit, but couldn’t get a deep enough blow. Kovid on the opposite side was doing the same, hammer blasting out (<+6 to hit, +1 bless, Yellow 3) but could not hit hard enough to damage it. “Maybe I should have stayed back and tried shooting it,” Brendon said.

Finally getting the magic weapon free, Lannis noted the “5” on the side and pointed it at the Decapus. “Nothing wrong with shooting,” he said with a smile, “As long as the right creature gets shot.” And then he fired (1d3+2 bolts: Pink 3:2+1=3 bolts. @+7 to hit, +1 bless, <7, =8, >16) and three enchanted bolts burst from the rod and slammed into the screaming monster. The first one got lost in the ceiling, but the next two hit and hit hard, spraying yellow sap like blood all over the room (1d6 Damage: Pink 3, Pink 4 – and Killed!!).

The Decapus pulled all its tentacles in towards itself in a splint instant as it took the mortal blow, and then smashed them out in a final flailing bashing fury (2 attacks on each person, -4 blinded). (@+0. Kovid 20 (crit), <15. Abraxas <17, <5. Lannis >18, <6. Lyra <15, <13. Brendon <6, >18). Everyone was buffeted and smashed by the blows, Kovid taking a crack to the left ear from a full on swing (Take 4 – crit, max damage). Lannis caught a further attack on his wounded leg (1d4 Damage, Red/Black 1 – Take 1), and Brendon got whipped along his ribs (1d4 Damage, Blue 2 – Take 2). But the Decapus fell from the ceiling and hit the floor with a heavy finality, strange liquids seeping and oozing from the many holes and burnt rents in its form.

And throughout the room, we could hear frustrated rustling sounds and SOMETHING…LOTS of somethings, began to move.
