PBEM, Episode 46 - Grilljax, K800 & Gobs

FORTY SIX

(I/C)
“RRRAAAAGHHH!!!” Kovid howled maniacally at the goblin in front of him, hammer whirling through the air with shrieking whistles and squealing claps at it smashed into the walls and floors. The greenskin in front of him was giggling as it stabbed out at him, getting a grip on his beard briefly and spewing spittle in the dwarf’s face. Kovid reversed his swing, slamming the handle of his war hammer into the goblin’s mouth, shattering its teeth and causing it to shrill loudly. It let go long enough for him to make a 360 degree arcing wild swing around his back (>+2 to hit, Yellow 15) and smashing it on the goblin’s skull (1d8+1 Damage, Yellow 5: 6 Damage and killed!!) cracking it open and spewing green and red chunks of flesh everywhere. “HA HA!” he cheered. “Shit stain! I’ll collect my hammer from your friends tomorrow!”

As for the second close gobbo, Wyn nudged Brendon and called out, “Lac! Let us shoot de gob in front of Salazar! Den he cen get dat loud gob bringin de kobs to us.” He drew back and fired (>+5 to hit, Orange 13), the clothyard shaft (1d6 damage: Orange 1) tracing a red line across the goblin’s scalp making it duck low. Brendon followed up (>+4 to hit, Red 18) with his own arrow, the shaft (1d6 damage: Red 6 and killed!) burying itself in the goblin’s chest, ripping its lungs out and making it slump over.

“Go get him, Doc!” Brendon slapped Abraxas on the shoulder.

As the Fighter brought his shield around and started his charge down the hall, Lyra finished her own slinging and (>+2 to hit, -4 partial cover, White 18) let her stone fly (1d3 Damage: White 6: 3 Damage) catching the goblin in the jaw and gargling its cried down the hall. “Got ya!”

Lannis finished his hands waving and let fly his last spell of the day – a glittering spinning glowing pink dart that arced unerringly across the hall and turned at the last moment (1d4 Damage: Pink 2) disappearing into the goblin’s chest with a spray of magical light. “That’s two!”

The goblin, fear in its eyes, turned to look to run away when Abraxas finished his headlong charge and howled, “¡Eat steel hombre malo!" His sword danced about in a crisscross pattern (>+5 to hit, Blue 8) and tore the wounded goblin open (1d8+2 damage, Blue 3: 5 Damage and killed!) open from stem to stern, its howls and screams trailing off to gurgling cries and then ended.

"Retreating to safety seems like an excellent idea at this juncture,” Lannis said, the distant cries of kobolds, many many kobolds, getting closer.

Looking around quickly, Lyra managed to find two of her sling stones (Add 2 stones (2) to Inventory), frantically shouldering her backpack and wondering, “Where are we retreating to? Like outside of the castle? I could use a good rest.” From the stairs down they could hear the frantic angry chittering of whatever Lannis had caught in his Web down there, the beasts furious in their caterwauling and howling.

“Barracks,” Wyn said as he (Orange 18%) managed to pull out 2 arrows that were still useable (Add 2 arrows (1) to inventory).

“Hurry, let’s go,” Brendon said (Red 64%) tearing the fletching off one arrow and busting a second one in his attempt to salvage any. “Fuck it, no time,” he said in disgust.

Kovid managed to pull his steel dagger from the goblin in question (Re-Add Dagger (10) to inventory) and Abraxas picked up the thrown stone tipped javelin (Re-Add Stone Javelin (15) to inventory) and one of the Knobby Clubs the goblins used (Add Knobby Club (40) to inventory).

(Initiative: Party White 3, Kobold War party Red/Black 4)

The cries of the kobolds was getting very loud. “At least 15,” Kovid said. “We can’t stay.”

“18 or more,” Wyn said, capping his quiver and pushing the lantern to the dwarf’s hand. “Time to run!”

The party ran, lantern bobbling about them as they ran away from the closing kobolds, turning into the Sitting Room and then dodging to the other hall. “Fuck, fuck, fuck!” Lannis cursed as they ran on, Lyra frantic as she was outpaced slowly by the rest of the party, even Kovid and his shorter legs running faster than the Cleric. As they turned to the long North corridor (>Kobold Hear Noise +20% bonus, Red/Black 46) it didn’t sound like they were giving chase although they were making LOTS of noise at arriving at the site of the battle.

The group charged up to the door on the right, Brendon opening it, and taking the steps down 2 at a time. At the bottom on the stairs he paused long enough for the group to catch up and then he hit the next door open. (WMC: Red/Black 3 – none!) They poured into the Lower Barracks until finally Lyra stumbled in, chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. “Here?!” She asked in horror. “We’re staying here?!” looking at the 5 mummified elves.

Brendon and Wyn were already at the door across the chamber opening it to the steps going up to the other barracks, Abraxas grabbing the handle to the door back to the hall and pulling the door TIGHTLY closed. They group stumbled on shaking legs to the steps, taking the up while Abraxas again made sure the door at the bottom of the steps was closed tight. And then INTO the room that the hobgoblins had been using – the stone cabinet was still in front of the door.

With no locking bar here, Abraxas flipped the nearest bed over and took one of the long slats off the base, moving it to the door and sliding the wood in place. “There!” he said. “That should keep them out!”

The party then took a moment to take stock of themselves, and finally relaxed after listening hard (no roll needed) hearing NO pursuit, or anyone nearby.

Slumping down they all looked at one another and then chuckled. “Lyra,” Lannis asked, “What the hell was slowing you down?”

She swung her backpack around and sighed, lifting the heavy blackened leather bundle free. “This, it weighs a ton.”

“What is it?”

“It’s what the dead elf had after he took it from the chest in the back of that cave.”

With care she unwrapped the ties until the crackling leather finally revealed the contents to be 132 Gold crowns, with the older mint stamp of the Dawnlands on the tails side. And there was an elven made silver ring – depicting a wolf head with 2 sapphires for its eyes. Brendon (Thief, Int>12) gave a whistle. “Damn, that’s a nice piece,” he said. “Easily worth 300 gold crowns!”

“Madre de la Dios!” Abraxas swore.

Lannis looked around and seemed to deflate. “Ok, so we’re here. Let’s eat and get some rest and figure out what happens now and next.”

Kovid shook the lantern and frowned. “Less than an hour’s worth of oil left in here. Whatever we decide it’s going to be dark.”
