PBEM - Episode 285. Rest, New Day, Moving.

TWO HUNDRED EIGHTY FIVE

(I/C)

“Let’s eat,” Brendon said, reaching into the barrel and taking out one of the green wrapped vegetable elven rations. “And while we’re here, Kovid, give me your hammer. I’m going to loop the bottom of it so you are less likely to lose it.”

“Thanks, Brendon.” The dwarf replied, taking a brown meat elven ration out of the barrel and opening it up. “mmm,” he sighed, “That’s great.” He looked over the group as they proceeded to grab their dinner (“Where’s all the cake?” “You ate it yesterday.” “Really? None left?” “No.” “This is bullshit.”) and then addressed their situation.  “We may have given our tail the slip today, but they’ll be twice as eager to catch us tomorrow. I still think obtaining the Corfard statue from the Guardians is important, but I’m open to ideas for our next step. Rest well folks. Until we thin out some of this opposition, I expect another rough day ahead.”

Nodding, Lannis said, “I agree with Kovid, the statues are important, but just as much their Mage woman, and their scout. They seem to be the last of his big hitters that we know about, I'd like to get that scout as soon as possible, I don't like the idea of her running around unmolested"

Looking around the room, Brendon thought for a few moments and suggested, “I think we should make some room in here and stack some of the chairs outside, sort of an early warning in case the Roberts find us. Want me to take first watch?”

"Call me crazy,” Wyn began.

“You’re crazy,” Lannis offered.

“Ugh,” the elf pinched the bridge of his nose briefly in mock pain and then continued, “We all need our full rest to recover magic, to shake off de cold, and let our bodies recuperate as much as possible. If we all sleep at same time, we save 4 hours of time.”

“That’s not that far off,” Lyra agreed. “We should all just get a full night’s sleep here. It seems safe enough - no one has found this place yet.”

“Oui. Afta 30 years, dis place been hidden long enough we should be fine. Plus we can stack de chairs in de secret hallway to alert us of anytin makes it through de hallway secret doors."

The Scout chuckled, “Good idea, move the furniture against the doors. Create more room for us to sleep and an early warning if the doors were opened.” He looked around as if trying to find something, “I wish I had thought of it.”

Taking a second meat centric meal and unwrapping it, Abraxas wondered, “Señor Wyndrome, por que do we move the furniture outside el puerto? Couldnt that make noise y alert the orcasas y such?”

“I don’t anticipate helping, just so you know,” the Magic User piped up.

“No merde,” Wyn replied. “We won’t be dragging them across the floor I would hope.”

“Shouldn’t we just stack them on this side of the Vault door? Buy us some tiempo should someone try to come in aqui, pero si we put the chairs in the hall, they will definitely come in here. If they find the secret hallway, they may miss the door and not bother. Or they have to break it down. Tenemos the key. We lock it, stack furniture en front of puerto en our side.”

“It’ll give us more room, dey don’t know at all of dis room and you can’t get in wit’out de key, and we aren’t talkin’ ‘bout movin’ a bedroom set.”

“I heard of an adventuring group that moved a couch once,” Lannis offered.

“How’d they do?” Kovid asked.

“Made about 80 commons for their efforts.”

Lyra nodded. “80 commons for moving a couch is pretty good Aine blessed pay.”

“True that,” the dwarf replied. “By the way, Lady, one of those bandages would help me greatly, if you can spare it.”

“I think I only have 2.” She was rummaging around her pack. “Never mind. Three.” She looked the group over. “Kovid, Abraxas, and myself.”

“Makes sense, Priestesse.”

“What that means though that in the morning I’ll probably have to use both healing spells on some of us. We will have to watch what we’re doing tomorrow - we won’t have any more healing.”

“Unless you go up in level,” Lannis offered.

“What does dat mean? Dere be a tird floor?”

“No more stairs,” Brendon pouted.

“Never mind.” The wizad took out his manastone and was rolling around his hands, giving the Scout a frowning look. When Brendon didn’t say anything, he handed it over. “Here,” he offered to Lyra. “I know yours got used up, and truthfully, if we do need any emergency refill on our spells, I’d rather it was yours because the next healing you do might have to be given to me.”

“Thanks, Lannis,” she said. (Add Manastone (magic) (2) to inventory)

“Don’t make a big deal about it. I’m not picking out china patterns or getting you a new saddle.”

The group finished their meal (everyone knock off HALF a day of food – the other half was assumed to come from the barrels. And knock off 1 day of water), the party moved some of the furnishings to the halls and placed them in front of each secret door. They then reentered the vault and locked it.

Lyra took out the three Sclepian Bandages and wrapped up the worst of the wounds on the dwarf, the fighter, and herself. Once finished, she gavethe group the nod and the dwarf shook his lantern.

Kovid turned it down letting the wick burn out (4 hours, 20 minutes of oil remaining) and took out 2 of his slowburn candles. “I’m going to leave them right here,” he made a show of placing them on the barrel along with the tinderbox, “In case we need the light. But for now, let’s get some rest and hope that our presence here is not discovered.”

“It’s gonna be dark.”

“Just imagine your mommy is here to tuck you in.”

“Whatever,” Lannis groused, watching the shadows lengthen and then finally consume the room as the lantern went dark. He had a moment where his heartbeat raced and he flashed back to charging through the castle in the pitch black, terror fueling his steps, before he forced himself to take some deep breaths and get his emotions under control.

“Wow, good job with the wight Lannis, way to stand up to it and save is even though it could have killed you, that was sooooooo brave,” he whispered in a mocking tone, voice pitched low enough that only he could hear his words. “It sure was great of us to acknowledge it, instead of making fun of you like normal. This is just the most recent of the brave things you have done, and we would never call you a coward for no reason. You even broke that horse statue you liked to alert us even though the owlbear was around. Nope, you deserve the thanks for what you did, instead of just being treated like a jerk all the time.”

The party fell asleep.

At some point during the night they were awakened to the sound of muted conversation on the other side of the wall to the Throne room but being tired and unable to make out words lulled them back to sleep. There was some other noises south, even more indistinct but enough to briefly alert them before they fell asleep once more. And there was some tapping and drilling sounds again sort of north, but when nothing occurred the sound blended into the background and the party remained asleep.

It was somewhere around 3:30/4:00 in the morning that the group woke up, feeling strangely refreshed and in good spirits. Lighting one of the slowburn candles, they noted there were no other strange noises either north or south, and the party stretched and proceeded to break their fast and pray. (Healed during the night: Lannis 2, Lyra 6, Wyn 2, Abraxas 6, Brendon 3, Kovid 10 – lol)

By this time it was about 5 AM and the group was about ready. Wyn had also taken 7 arrows from Kovid’s spare quiver (reduce Kovid arrows to 4, Increase Wyn’s arrows to 18), and Kovid practiced swinging the hammer with the wrist loop on.

“Ok. So what’s the plan today?”

Time now is Day 8, 5 AM

(OOC)
