PBEM - Episode 276. Butchers, Skellies, and More

TWO HUNDRED SEVENTY SIX

(I/C)

Brendon shook his head. “Might have been the ballista noise.”

Kovid shook his head. “Don’t think so Brendon. Ballistas make big clicks. Not little ones.”

“Want to get the door open, but not get skewered,” the Scout said. “I’ll stand on this side, Kovid, you go there,” he pointed to the left side of the door, “twist the knob and I’ll try to open it with my fingertips.”

“Door’s heavy,” Wyn noted.

Lannis handed over his staff.  "Try this, should keep you further from harm’s way. As for the click, my money's on crossbows.” As he turned back to stand behind Lyra, he added while pointing to his staff, “And don't damage it though, it’s mine."

Whispering to the Dwarf, Wyn pointed back to the main door to the room and said, "I'll take up post at de door to de hallway in case dey try to flee out de udder door."

Meanwhile Abraxas seeing the concern regarding this portal, backed up to the corner a half dozen long paces behind Brendon and readied his Scythe. Lyra and Lannis also backed up closed to the other corner, the Cleric with her Flail out and Lannis with his fingers limbered up. He nodded to the others and the elf opened the door, stepping out silently. He positioned himself, looking north and south, Infravsion kicking in to show nothing coming down either direction. Satisfied that no one was sneaking through the northern door (yet), he gave Brendon and Kovid a thumbs up.

Theystran Hammer held tightly in his hand, Kovid reached out and turned the knob VERY SLOWLY until the door unlatched and he gave the portal a half inch shove before letting the knob turn back also VERY SLOWLY. Once done, he let out a slow breath and lifted his chin in the Scout’s direction. Taking a firm grip on the wizard’s staff at full extension, he pushed the door open, twisting his body to force the door to the side.

And it was ripped from his hands as Skeletons came pouring out of the now open room, rusty short swords and splintered spears in their hands, clicking and clacking as they poured into the room, seemingly a dozen in number! And from the hallway, Wyn saw the door open there and one..two..three figures step out, clicking and clacking and some sort of hissing noise as well.

“Ah, hell!” Lyra cursed, dropping her hands to her holy symbol and lifting it high. “Let me turn them. Wyn!” She called out, “You might have to move real fast, Skeletons coming your way!”

“On it, Priestesse,” he announced, lifting an arrow and readying to fire. “We ‘ave trios in de hall out ‘ere as well!”

“Aine! I beseech you! Lend me your strength and TURN these undead foes!” (Auto success: 2d6 HD: 5+3 = 8) There was a red and gold blast of light that burst from the cleric’s outstretched hand the was wide at first and then narrowed down to a long cone of positive energy that hit the skeletons as they emerged from the doorway in a murderous horde. However as the light hit the skeletons it ROSE in power and stray beams of light also came from Lyra’s eyes, nose, mouth, even her hair danced wildly as if she was riding a galloping horse. A scream of tingling energy burst from the woman’s mouth, further adding strength to the goddess’s light – and where the burning light fell upon the undead – they paused ready to flee.

But instead burst in a sudden god given flame and were consumed in seconds, blowing apart in a rippling spray of exploding undead until EIGHT of them had been destroyed in this manner before the light ended and Lyra gave a hiccupping gasp.

On seeing only fragments of bone bouncing around the ground and skeletal dust coating the area in a settling cloud, Lannis gave the cleric a sharp hit in the shoulder and admonished, “Why the FUCK have you NEVER done that before?!?”

“Damn,” Kovid swore, “Next time you should lead with that.”

Lyra looked at her holy symbol and then her hands, the last of the light finally fading away. “Yeah…I’m going to say that was a benefit from the last time I went up in level.” She looked up, “Thanks, Aine!” The number of undead spilling into the room had dropped from 11 to 3, and Kovid and Brendon readied their weapons to attack as Abraxas came jogging up.

In the hall, the elf took aim at the closest skeleton coming towards him and fired (<+5 to hit, Orange 1 – fumble! Heartswood bow – reroll. >+5 to hit, Orange 11), the arrow seeming to wobble after it was fired but flew true, striking the lead skeleton full in the chest (1d6 Damage: Orange 5 – and killed!), blowing out its breastbone and folding the walking undead in on itself. “I got one!” he called out, getting the reply, “Lyra got 8!”

“What de hell did she use!?”

Lannis was readying his spell. “Good focus. Just shows what a bottle of wine, a tub, a candle, and some potpourri can achieve when you’re unmarried at 35 and have a cat!”

“Eat shit, Lannis,” she replied.

Kovid meanwhile waited for the next undead to step all the way through before swinging his war hammer, connecting (=+5 to hit, -1 cold, Yellow 8) with the walking aberration. His hammer hit twice and then twice more (1d8+2-1 damage cold, Yellow 3+2-1=4 damage and killed!), each time busting off another bone before a final blow smashed the skull in and dropping it to the ground.

Brendon plied his borrowed staff, twirling it around with a skill and dexterity that Lannis had never displayed, blocking half a dozen attempted strikes before spinning it around his head and swinging it HARD (>+3 to hit, -1 cold, Red 16), cracking the skeleton in the side (1d6-1 damage cold, Red 3-1=2 Damage), and busting off some ribs but that was it.

Abraxas had completed his charge and his Morrigaan Scythe struck the wounded undead (>+6 to hit, Blue 16) across the upper body (1d8+3 damage, Blue 1= 4 Damage and killed!), blasting it apart and sending bone fragments to rain about the ground. “Hitting these guys is mucho fun! Wheee!”

“IN BET GRAV!” Lannis finally finished his spell and a single rolling pink dart slammed into the last skeleton (1d4 Damage, Pink 3), spinning it into the door frame but it righted itself and kept on coming. “Damn. I left one guys. Sorry!”

Coming down the hall, the last two undead closed on Wyn who was swapping from his bow to his sword and met the lead one with an upraised sweeping block. Only to misjudge the undead’s thrusting blade as it was missing the front foot of the short sword, and the ragged blade hit (>+1 to hit, Black 20 – Critical max Damage – 6 Damage!) the elf hard and slipped through the Banded Leather armor and sunk a good 7” into his midsection before it was yanked free. “Fuck, fuck, putain fuck, FUCK!” he cursed, engaging the undead to prevent a second such hit. “Dis one hit me hard!”

It was the other undead that caught Wyn’s attention. As it was coming down the hall he thought it was just another skeleton, but this one looked different. It was a woman at one point, hobgoblin, and still had about 3/4ths of its flesh, but the flesh was sunk tight against her frame. She strode down the hall like a cat, walking with a purpose and no worry. Her eyes, missing black pits, were staring at the elf and as she strode, where her feet had touched the stones, she left cold icy prints behind. In fact at a good 8 feet from the elf, he could feel the sucking cold coming from her body as she lifted her talon like nails and reached for the elf, hissing like a snake, her mouth a ruin of jagged teeth and a black twisting tongue.

“And dis one is freaking me de fuck out as well!”

Meanwhile the skeleton that had been darted by Lannis tried to engage Kovid (<+1 to hit, Green 7) and although he hit the dwarf a few times, nothing even came close to running through his platemail armor.

Time now is Day 7, 5:17 PM

(OOC)

Great turning. At Lyra’s level she disintegrates skeletons – so whohoo! We have 2 left, 1 skellie in the hall with Wyn (who is at the door) and 1 skellie with Kovid. There is a 3rd undead that is not a skeleton and is stalking forward. It seems to be moving a bit slower than normal skeletons (who move 40’), but seems decidedly more dangerous. You guys have initiative. What’s the plan?
