PBEM - Episode 343. Sanctuary, Chapel, and a Break.

THREE HUNDRED FORTY THREE

(I/C)

(Enemy Scout: Black 4)

Giving the area behind them a critical glare, Brendon motioned to the elf. “Wyn, make some marks with your boot leading to that door,” he pointed west, “further down the hall. Misdirection never hurt anyone.”

“Tres bien, Monsieur Du Lac.” Wyn untied the blanket from one boot and looked at it, rubbing the sole softly with the side of his thumb, and noting that it was still leaving a print. “I’ll be right back.”

Lyra looked down at the Hymnal, “Anyone mind if I grab the book?”

Brendon nodded, “Just be sure not to leave an imprint on the chair.”

Still rattling the invisible box, Lannis shrugged, “Take the book for all I care, gonna be hard to turn the pages with your hooves though. Let's not tarry too long long though, some very unpleasant people are hunting for our nipples."

“What a douche,” the Cleric muttered, thumbing through the worn pages (add Theystan Hymnal [15] to inventory) . The inside of the cover indicated the book was the property of Braunur, High Vicar of Theystra. She looked through the verses as she waited for the rest of the party.

Wyn was walking down the hall to the west, marking the floor here and there with the soles of his dyed boots, and Kovid and Abraxas were checking the area behind the chairs for any secret door or passages. “Anything in the book jump out to you, Lyra?” the dwarf asked, “Maybe you have to sit in the chair?”

“Hey, Doc,” Brendon asked the Fighter, “You have another one of those spikes? They are gonna look around and I’d like to slow them down as much as I can.”

“Si, si.” Abraxas took one out (reduce inventory to 8 spikes) and handed it over before rejoining the dwarf as the two of them scoured the alcove for any passages (>Yellow 5…=Blue 1), eventually coming to the conclusion there wasn’t one.

Shoving his prybar under the door, Brendon stepped on the far end, fulcrumed up the portal, and shoved the spike under the gap as far to the right as he could, kicking it once or twice to make sure it was set In (<Reverse Open Locks, jam door opposite end +25%, Red 30). Satisfied, he stepped of the prybar and the door groaned as the base of it bit into the spike and was held solid. He shook it and then put his tools away. “Done.”

Dusting his hands off, Kovid stepped out from behind the chairs and headed to the south door, head shaking. “Come on Wyn. I don't think we have any more time. Let's move into the chapel.”

From the north we could hear the sound of banging and hitting as the hobgoblins were trying to force their way through the door heading into Duchess’ Room. There was some angry sounds and calls of weapons at the ready.

"We need to get in that Chapel, amigos,” Abraxas agreed. “Si that secret room es still una secret, it may be el mejor place por us ahora. Let's see que es en este Hall."

For his part, Wyn had left what trail he could (4/6 success (can always spend a food to improve the chance by 1 ;) ): Orange 4!) and satisfied, looped the blanket back over his boot and tied it swiftly once again before jogging back to the group, avoiding his own markings. “All good,” he said with a smile.

Lannis had been feeling around the invisible box during these few minutes. He could feel that two of the sides that touched (one of the largest and one of the smallest) rattled slightly as if they could move (>Half Int, quick screwing around no time, Pink 11) but he couldn’t feel any latch, prod, or catch that would make it open. As Kovid grabbed the handle to open the door and we could hear the mob getting one barrier closer to the north, he tucked the box back under his arm and got himself ready to enter.

The door opened to reveal a very large room with a 15’ ceiling. There was a raised platform on the eastern wall where a 10’ statue of Theystra was situated. Padded pews were scattered about the chamber, most likely seating for 60 or so if need be. “Very nice,” Lyra said (no roll needed), “It’s a Sanctuary. A place for the castle’s faithful to retreat to. A place of safety.”

“Is dis de chapel?”

“Sanctuary is typically a part of a chapel.” She pointed across the room to a door dimly seen on the south wall. “I’d guess through there.”

As like other rooms we had seen though, there were mummified elven bodies in here, 15 or so. Most likely slain when the Rainbow Ward went off, they had been here and died some 30 years ago. There was some effort made to deface the room, red paint or dye had been splashed on Theystran’s legs, some of the pews, and a bit of the walls in the past (none of it was fresh). There was two sets of double doors on the western wall, the handles looked battered and beaten and the hinges were in poor shape. “Don’t open those,” Kovid said with a grunt, “unless you want to make a shit ton of noise.”

There was an additional 2 bodies in here that were not mummified, instead they were stone. One was of a young elven woman crawling on the floor her eyes terrified as she was reaching away. The other was a of a stout elven male at Theystra’s feet. He had a knife in one hand, arm down as if he had just slashed something, and his other hand held what seemed to be 4 stone snakes but their tails had been removed, and they were biting his arm. He had a furious look on his face, his eyes looking roughly in the same place the elven girl on the floor was looking – although nothing was there.

With the sound of the Hobgoblins and other sundry looking for us now 2 rooms back, the party started to push their way into the Sanctuary. “We are going in, yes?” Lannis asked.

Time now is Day 8, 12:12 PM

(OOC)

Alright. Enemy got a good roll and came 1 room closer. We all in? Shutting the door? What’s the plan? Looking around?
