PBEM - Episode 187, Orcs and Fire

Darkvision, low light vision. Sorry, I'm a purist. Infravision. A brief description as the Predator sees things and forcing the group to think in terms of heat and thermals is a cornerstone of the game. So there we go!

ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY SEVEN

(I/C)

Turning to Kovid, Wyn pointed at the lantern and whispered, "Let's see what de light might be hiding, Dwarfriend.”

“Aye,” the dwarf replied, taking his towel out and holding it near one side of the lantern to block the light, allowing Wyn to step slowly down the steps and look around.

“Merde.” He cursed.

“What?” Brendon asked, looking down the steps and then frowned as well. “Well, shit.”

“That’s why he said,” Abraxas chuckled, the Fighter inching closer to look as well.

Scattered on the steps were hot burning embers, like one would find at the bottom of a burn barrel or a fireplace. And they were tossed haphazardly on the steps and seemingly down the hall, what little the group could see, as well.

“Oil trap?” Lannis asked, taking out two of his darts and proceeding to unspool his censer.

“No…” Brendon said slowly. “No oil down there. Nothing to burn either. Not enough to give off light.” He rubbed his chin. “What are they doing?”

“Merde,” the elf cursed again. “It is clever. Little pockets of heat all over de place, makes it ‘ard for me to identify anythin’ wit’ infravision.” He spat softly. “Putain Pigs are clever like that.” Noticing something on the step a little bit down, he bent down and picked it up, showing it to the dwarf. “ ‘Ere, Dwarffriend.”

“Wot we got here?” Kovid took it, it was a wide wooden wedge, the flat end showed some bruising and compression to it. “Ah,” he nodded. “That’s what they did. Dropped a couple of wedges in the door to force it in place, and then removed the two hinges so any attempt to open it and the door just falls free.”

"Hey Dwarf,” Lannis hissed. “Hammer.”

“What?”

Lannis held one of his iron darts near the floor at an angle. “Right here. Just hammer it in. It just has to look good enough to stop or slow someone chasing us down.”

“Dart in the corner?” Lyra asked with a smirk.

“No. There will be one there as well and this string rope, “he held up the unraveled rope from the censer,” will run between them.”

“Ah yes, that string sure looks like a deterrent to me Lannis,” she replied mockingly.

“Ugh. If WE saw something like this we would spend half an hour taking cover while Brendon tried to disarm it with a ten foot pole attached to a shield."

“Whatever, Big Brain. I’ll help you.” The dwarf took out his normal warhammer and bent low.

“Quietly, ok? No WHAM WHAM WHAM, but taptaptap. Got it?”

“Sure. Thanks for telling the dwarf how to hammer something.”

“It’s only because you’re not quite a moron that I entrusted this to you,” the Magic User patted Kovid on the shoulder as the dwarf did his best to drive the two darts into the corner of the floor (> Drive darts, Yellow 17), having no problem and getting the job done swiftly.

Brendon was standing with Wyn and turned to wizard to ask, “Lannis pass me a torch please.” After getting one he leaned closer to Wyn and whispered, “The fake pentagram in the hall and now the fake trap at the door with the twine, good thinking thief.”

“Eh, it keeps ‘im busy,” Wyn chuckled. “I yam gonna go ‘bout ‘alf way down an’ see iffn I kin see anytin’.” Looking at Abraxas he added, “Salazar, if dere be anyting heat like that I kin make out, we vamanous down, si? With you in front of me so I cen cast en den we attack?”

Scythe in hand, the Fighter nodded. "Rapido, pero cautiously amigos."

Wyn crept down the steps, getting further away from the lantern to guarantee his infravision working, but it kept fitzing on and off as well as being indisctinct as there were hot spots all over the place from the tossed embers. “Fucking orcs,” he muttered as he hit the midway point and crouched low, trying to be quiet and inconspicuous (= Hide, Orange 4)

“Fuck.”

Embers and spilled coals littered the hall making any easy identification a challenge if not impossible (> Search / Looking, Orange 8). But he could make out the length of the hall, no orcs were obviously standing around. It looked like the door to Travis’ room was open…as well as the secret door across the way.

After a minute he backed up where Lannis had finished tying the rope between the darts and was sprinkling iron scraps around the corners. "You find what you need to with your magic heat seeking elf eyes? I have faith in you. Point of note though,” he motioned to the “trap” he had made, “If you come running back this way don't knock this stuff over, mmkay?"

After describing what he had seen and how it was a bit different from what we had originally expected to find, Wyn asked, “Hokay? So we going wit’ original plan of tossed torch down zee hall or sumthin’ else?”

Time now is Day 5, 2:07 PM

(OOC)

Hall wasn’t quite what the expectation was so I had to stop at half a turn to let you guys decide what’s up and how to proceed.
