PBEM, Episode 161 - Halls, Wolf, and Bees

Sometimes the dice are in the group's favor on their plans and hopes as this situation ended up being. Especially in BX play, it's rewarding to think outside the box and try something off the chart. BX Baby!

Follows:

ONE HUNDRED SIXTY ONE

(I/C)

Taking advantage of the silence, Brendon slipped into the lit wolf room, saying, “I’m gonna wait here, while the rest of you are at the corner. If Wyn can control the wolf, great. If not, then we might be fighting more the the wolf.”

Nodding, the elf addressed the party, "Good call. Everyone but de scout en de rats hide around de corner. De scout be in de wolf room. Since I must be wit’in 30 feet ov de wolf to make de magic 'appen, I stand to East side of door, usin' de rats as a buffer."

The group all made agreeing noises. Abraxas took the back, watching the return hall, Kovid and Lannis were at the corner. The Magic User took out the rope/bowl censer he had cobbled together the other day, dumped the 7 incense cones inside, and then the scrap cloth he had been carrying, making sure it was a bit damp. Lyra look one of his candles and lit it, ready to drop it on the cones and get the smoke going.

Meanwhile Brendon was just inside the door, short sword drawn and held in a downward stabbing position while Wyn snuck a bit past the door, pushing the 8 giant rats ahead of him. He crouched low behind the shield and once everyone was set, whispered, “Un, Deux. Go.”

Two of the Giant Rats walked forward to the end of his control zone and began peeing and chittering loud. The voices in the room changed (can’t tell what was being said) but there was some whimpering and whuffing noises followed by the padding of feet.

And buzzing. There was some buzzing as well.

Coming around the corner was a hybrid wolf hound, heavy chested and shaggy coated. It had odd tumorous lumps growing on its body and it growled as it hit the hall and started coming to the rats when it stopped and Wyn felt a flare in his mind. “Got it!” he whispered, leaping back into the wolf room and crouching low to still see his charges and what might be coming.

He then felt two tiny flares as his mind also picked up the control of two idly flying fat bees. “Ooo,” he moaned, “:My ‘ead is full o’ animals.”

“We on?” Kovid whispered from the corner.

“We are,” Wyn whispered back. "De next sound is from me. Get ready for bees."

The wolf began whimpering and barking, pausing, and doing it again under Wyn’s control. There was the sound of a chair scraping the ground, some movement, and coming around the corner was a tall and cloaked hairy face lanky hobgoblin in a variety of outlandish colors and swaddled in layers. He had a large forked staff that hung a huge beehive, along with smaller hives on his belt and in the folds of his clothing. Scores of bees were flying around him as he came out.

And behind him were two armored burly looking 7’ tall almost 350 lbs orcs each with a heavily notched and used sword.

The beekeeper was saying something to the wolf walking closer when he noted all the giant rats standing in the hall. (Surprise check: Red/Black 1). The three giant rats closest to the front ran right behind the Beekeeper as the wolf charged and leapt attempting to attack (>+3 to hit, +4 Surprise, White 2) and although he hit the Beekeeper, there was no obvious wounds and damage done. The Beekeeper was very upset and yelling in goblin at the wolf, almost crying as he tried to push the snout aside and wrap his arms around it.

“Light it!” Lannis hissed and Lyra dropped the candle on the Censer the cones lighting and smoke beginning to gather and billow out.

(Initiative: Party Steel 5, Enemy Red/Black 6)

“What wit’ your wolf? What ‘bout these rats?!” the orcs asked, speaking common and looking around uncomfortably.

The Beekeeper sniffed and looked around, eyes narrowed, lips pulling back. “Fuck da vermin! We gots a problem!”

And the air around him exploded with hundreds, maybe even a thousand or so bees. “BEES!!!” he roared as they emerged from his hives, waist, even the room behind him. The billowed around and started soaring and swarming about the giant rats and flowing down the hall like a living buzzing yellow and black cloud.

“Merde,” Wyn whispered.

“That is a fuck load of bees,” Brendon noted.

The two orcs had their swords out and began hacking down at Un and Deux (<+3 to hit, Black2..<+3 to hit, Red/Black 6) and although they laid into the giant rats, their blows never actually connected, ringing on stone and wall repeatedly instead. “Damn! Day are small an’ fast!”

Meanwhile the bees had descended against the giant rats (Save vs Breath Weapon, 20, 16, 16 – yes. 11, 14, 14, 8, 3 – no) three of them weathering the storm of stinging insects while 5 others danced about in maddening pain from the multiple stings and bees in their face (1 damage, -2 to AC, to hit, all saves. No spells this round (n/a) ).

As all this was going on, the Beekeeper eschewed attacking his wolf, wondering why it was behaving as it was. (>+4 Grapple, Green 15) He pounced on its back, placed his head near the wolf’s shoulder, wrapped his arms around it from behind and twisted the animal back, lifting it partially off the ground and yelling, “Calm down! Calm down! Calm down! It’s me! Daddy! Calm down!”

Time now is Day 5, 8:09 AM

(OOC)

And bottom of the round! Wyn, besides the wolf and the 8 giant rats, you also have 2 bees! Let me know what the plan is. Brendon – they are too far down the hall for a backstab, FYI. And there is a fucking cloud of a thousand bees taking up an area about 30’ or so long. Let me know the plan
