TWENTY THREE
(I/C)
"We should save this for later,” Lannis said, motioning the dwarf and scout back up the stairs. “Plenty more on this floor to find and kill first, we should continue down the way we've been going.”
“Next door?” Abraxas asked.
Lannis nodded. He looked at the door downstairs and across the hall to the other door. “We should tie these doors together. Should slow down the hobgoblins or anyone else coming up those stairs. Anyone have rope?”
Wyn reached around his shoulder and pulled the coil up. “Oui! I have.”
“Let me know if you require help with any knots, but do be quick about it,” Lannis said.
Tying one end to the nearest door’s knob with two loops and a pair of knots, the elf crossed the hall, trailing the rope behind him. “We elves ‘ave so many knots for so many tings. Dis be a door knot. But dere also barbecue knot, boil knot, broil knot, bake knot, saute knot. Dere's also, knot-kabobs, knot creole, knot gumbo. Pan fried knot, deep fried knot, stir-fried knot... hm, ok. Door knots done. More explore time, oui?"
“Knots?” Lyra asked. “Those all sound like cooking methods... you sure you’re not mixing the two up? As far as the direction, I’m a bit torn. Perhaps the hobgoblins we killed left some useful gear behind in there for us to use? Potions or weapons?”
“Perhaps,” Brendon said. “But I’m not comfortable checking downstairs yet until we clear this area first.”
“I agree,” Kovid said, wiggling his shoulder. “Let’s stay here first, make sure the hall is clear, see what’s at the end, and then make another decision.”
“Senor Klover, What is wrong with your shoulder?”
The dwarf shrugged. “Still a bit sore after the goblin fight. Going to need to sleep it off tonight.”
Clapping him on the back, Abraxas puffed out his chest. “I will open the door for you, Master Dwarf.”
The group fell in behind Brendon, lantern lit, and proceeded further down the hall, looking carefully around. As they approached the 4th door on the left, their lantern showed the hall continued on and still kept going. Giving the door a slow and methodical once over, Brendon was (>Find traps, Red 45) sure the door was not trapped and there was (>Hear Noise, Red 98) no noise to be heard. “It’s not trapped either.”
Abraxas, setting himself up in front of the door looked down (<Wis check, Blue 4) and whispered. “What is that?”
“What?”
He pointed at the floor. There was some sort of crystally looking stone along the base of the door. “That.”
Kovid glanced down. “Calcite.”
“God bless you.”
“No, Manling. Calcite. Mineral growth.”
“Oh.” Abraxas stared at it. “Is it dangerous? Why here?”
Kovid pursed his lips. “Hmmm. Naturally growing mineral, takes months and even years to grow like it’s doing. Going to say this door hasn’t been open in a while.” He glanced at the frame. “Might have to put some effort into opening it.”
Abraxas nodded. He backed up a step and started to raise his leg when Brendon grabbed his arm. “What the hell are you doing?”
“Opening the door, Senor Lake.”
“Try the handle?”
“But Senor Dwarfbeard said it might be stuck.”
“So? I get it, it’s exciting And you’re a big fella but you can’t be kickin' in doors and yelling”.
“Who said I was going to yell?”
Lannis shrugged. “I will admit, Big Guy, it did look like you were going to Shockmaster the door.”
Abraxas sighed. “Si.” He grabbed the handle and turned it, a crackling sound came forth. “I push hard with shoulder, not with me shoes.” He then (<Open Door +2 bonus, Blue 3) shouldered the door HARD, and it opened with enough force to crack the calcite along its base and hinges.
The lantern light filled the room of what was once a sizable DINING ROOM. There was a massive FIREPLACE along the closest wall to the EAST, and a pair of dark IRON CANDLE HOLDERS flanked the doors. The room was so big, that it was larger than the light the lantern gave, leaving the far end of the room undefined and in gloom. There seemed to be massive PILLARS running from floor to ceiling. There was a huge DINING TABLE taking up the center of the room that seemed to have PEOPLE sitting around it!
However, even in the lantern light and from this distance it was obvious the people were statues. Pale grey and white, at least 7 that we could see but sure to be more, sitting in chairs around the table. There were in various finery, had an elven look about them, and the ones you could see were looking in the direction of the door with different excited or horrified expressions on their faces.
Whatever food was once on the table was long gone, leaving only vague black smears on plates and bowls and mugs situated there.
Time now is 12:37
(OOC)
Ok, room is so big I cannot map it out entirely unless you enter to shine the lantern further inside. What’s the plan?
