PBEM, Episode 17 - Gob and Hob Kitchen

Throughout the PBEM game you will see notes of "Thanks Kelly" here and again. One of my friends purchased me a set of Eldritch Dice, Lovecraft specific. I have other dice I use when I DM, but for this game, I wanted to bring them out so they (red/black) are the primary dice of the bad guys. And the dice have been rolling great - so I thank her often during the Posts and she comments all the time that I should NOT be using the dice she bought me. :)

SEVENTEEN

(I/C)

Seeing Kovid’s temper flaring, Wyn laid his hand on the dwarf’s arm and leaned in, “Monsieur Dwarf. I am all for ze killing of filth…”

“Damn straight,” Kovid snarled.

“Oui, oui. But I suggest that instead of just bustin’ down ze door, we listen first. If’n we outnumber them, we kills them good. Otherwise we come up wit anudder plan.”

“This entire place sucks,” muttered Lyra. “Goblins, rats, kobolds? How many other shitty vermin are infesting this place.”

Looking around, Kovid sighed. “As long at the end of it, we make green paste.”

The party all resettled their weapons and gear, Lannis giving the grain and beer a last look. “I suppose this room isn't going anywhere, I acquiesce that we should deal with the more immediate threat first.” As they were readying to leave, he stuck his hand in one of the grain sacks and scooped a couple handfuls into his own bag. Lyra who saw this raised her eyebrow at him. “What?”

“What are you doing, Lannis? She asked.

“Nothing.”

“Really?”

Lannis frowned. “What? Is taking a handful or two of grain suddenly against Aine’s religion? Is there a problem with this?”

She shook her head. “Can you even tell me why?”

He closed the bag and grabbed his staff, ready to go back into the hall. “I could, but my intellect is so dizzying complex and my arcane skills unfathomable that it would take longer than it’s worth to explain.” Giving her a final look, Lannis leaned in and whispered, “Magic,” and then stepped into the hall.

Meanwhile Brendon and Wyn taking point with Kovid right there, inched their way down the hall till they came to the right side door, where another listen (no roll) revealed nothing new either. From there they stopped at the next door on the left where everyone was able to hear the occasional sound of something wooden being tossed on the ground. “Greenskins, huh?” Brendon asked, running his fingers across the door frame (<Find Trap, Red 02) finding no traps or surprises, “I like Gobslayer better than Manslayer. What say we get you to earn that name?”

Giving the rest of the party the thumbs up, the group gathered together around the door, ready to open. Glancing at the door (<Wis +2 bonus, Yellow 7) Kovid was able to see a faint flicker. “Goblins have some sort of light in there. I would guess a torch.”

"Good!” Abraxis hissed. “I was wondering how will we smash the Goblins without SeƱor Kupid's lantern? I can not see without light. I might hit one of you!"

Wyn was satisfied. “Glad to hear that. Brendon, ‘ow many of zem you think?”

Brendon, aware that their presence was still undiscovered but for not much longer, shrugged. “They haven’t said anything, but the echoes through the door lead me to believe 4 or 5, tops.”

Kovid looked at Wyn and pursed his lips. “That’s good for us.” Abraxis had his shield up, sword at the ready, Brendon and Wyn their bow, Lannis a wickedly long dart, Lyra loaded up a sling stone, and Kovid had a death grip on his war hammer. “Ancestors…Guide our hands.”

And he grabbed the handle, turned it, and pushed hard but not with care not to make too much noise (Surpise Check, Goblins, White 3).

The room was a KITCHEN of some sort, counters and shelves on both sides of the room had their CUPBOARDS and DRAWERS open and bowls, plates, cups, serving utensils, and forks and spoon were all over the floor as the place was in the process of being ransacked. There was a large TABLE and 4 CHAIRS at the far end of the room where some CLAYWARE POTS sat. Stuffed in a sconce near the north end of the room was a torch illuminating the 50’ LONG, 30’ WIDE room. In which were 5 GOBLINS.

Just under 5’ tall, their eyes glowed red in the dim light as they whirled to see the group at the door and in that moment (Initiative Steel Party 4, Red/Black Goblins 6 – thanks for the dice Kelly!!!) they saw Kovid and shouted out, “Dwarf!!!” before charging forward to attack.

Three of the Goblins ran at the group at full speed, crude spears with stone points in their hands as the dwarf readied himself for the impact. They struck at the dwarf with fury and abandon but little skill, (+1 to hit, Red/Black 2, Red/Green 17, Red/Grey 19) striking the dwarf all about his platemail, stabbing again and again. He twisted and parried but found himself quickly unable to defend against all three goblins at once and took a wicked stab in a weak spot near his shoulder (1d6 Damage, Green 6 Damage Kovid) and again a battering around his midsection, (1d6 Damage, Red/Black 6 Damage Kovid – thanks for the dice Kelly!!) – Dropping the dwarf to practically half hit points!

Meanwhile, the furthest goblin slammed his body into the table, upending it so he could have some cover, and swung his own sling overhead, letting a stone fly (+2 to hit, -4 penalty, Steel 12) but it cracked into the door jamb near the dwarf and the last goblin, stood up on a chair to get better aim and tried to send his stone to fly out and hit Abraxas (+2 to hit, -2 penalty, Steel 3) where it never made it out of the room, cracking into the lintel instead.

And now it was the party’s turn.

Time now is 11:59

(OOC)

Bottom of the First Round of Combat, Kovid is in the door facing three goblins, 2 of them further in the room, one with 75% cover and both with slings. Kovid, between you and Abraxas, you both have the strength to clear the door and force the goblins back into the room – but you will lose 10’ off your movement doing so (20’ dwarf, 30’ fighter) assuming you want to run past them. Everyone else has missile weapons out and ready – can change if want. Door to the room is open so noises if the combat continues for a length of time might trigger another WMC.
