PBEM, Episode 16 - B and G Storeroom

As for the I/C chatter between the characters, I get a lot of that from the emails that are sent off to me, as well some snippets from the Discord that the group talks about the game on.

Follows:

Kovid stepped aside, allowing Abraxas and Brendon to enter. Looking up at the ceiling for anything hiding up in the gloom, Abraxas said, "In, in we go. Let's see what's inside!” Lannis hissed at the Fighter, fingers over his lips and the other hand pointing at his chest for some reason. Not sure what he was indicating, Abraxas asked, “Should we open the barrels, or pop a hole in them? Maybe SeƱor Laves can listen to the barrels?"

Turning back to Kovid, Lannis said,"Keep an eye on that door, I don't want anything to surprise us, or us to alert anything out there to our presence.” Holding his staff before him, he went to the stacked barrels, knocking on them lightly and listening.

Kovid stayed in the door, ears pricked and watching carefully up and down the hall, Lyra and Wyn with sling and bow added their efforts as well.

After a few minutes of looking, Brendon (<Wis +2 bonus, Red 7), Abraxas (=Wis +2 bonus, Blue 12) and Lannis (>Wis +2 bonus, Pink 18) had given the room a deep once over. The ceilings had only a few sips of webbing, there were a number of bags and barrels in and the barrels were solid, thumping and jostling filled with some liquid.

There were some driven corks in the top that Brendon were able to pry up (Str > 8, no roll) to see and sample what was inside. Beer. Barrels of beer. Abraxas noted on the side of the barrels were the caskers marking of this year, and the location was Jector. Which is east of here, and is typically known to be a goblin kingdom. “What how you say beer from this year get into castle that elf place and not in for thirty years? Makes nada sense.”

As for the sacks, they had grain. Bags and bags of grain. Moving them about to get a count, Lannis let one slip from the shelf where it landed heavily on the ground. Wyn from outside gave them a once over and whispered, “That iz a lot of grain. Enough for 80 acres easily to plant.”

“Lannis,” Kovid whispered to the Magic User, “Legs man. Use them.”

 "Use them to do what?"

“Pick up that bag of grain.”

“Why?”

“You dropped it.”

Lannis gave the dwarf a long stare. “And?”

“Just pick it up.”

Grumbling Lannis went to bent over when Abraxas stopped the mage and shook his head. “Legs, Senor. Use your legs.” He bent down, grabbed the sack, and stood up smoothly. “See?”

“Ah, yeah. I get it!” He patted the empty shelf and stepped back so Abraxas could put the bag there. “I’ll do that next time. When I’m not rearranging the order of the cosmos or weaving the strands of creation to obey my wishes.”

“Great!” Abraxas said. “Glad to know.”

Brendon sucked his teeth for a minute. “How long does grain last?”

“Could be months, even years, mon ami,” Wyn offered.

The thief nodded. “Yeah. But this, like the beer, is new. What’s going on?”

Meanwhile Lyra, Wyn, and Kovid had been listening (>Hear Noise, White 12 - >Hear Noise, Orange 9 - <Hear Noise, Yellow 4) and watching with care down the hall. From the next room to the north, the three of them could faintly hear the occasional sound of something falling and bouncing, wood on stone.

Kovid’s head snapped up, beard bristling. “What the…?” he muttered.

“What?” Lyra asked.

“Goblin.”

“Where?” Wyn looked around.

“In the room making noises. I swear on my ancestor’s beard, I heard a goblin voice.”

“Really?” Wyn asked. “What did they zay?”

“I don’t know their tongue, I have better things to do than speak their filthy language.” He seemed to be growing red beneath his beard. “I’m not sure what the plan is, but truthfully, if there are goblins there, we have an obligation, Manling, to end them and with great prejudice.” (>Cha +3  Level check Racial Hatred, Yellow 14) Kovid gripped his war hammer tighter, knuckles going white.

Meanwhile Lannis, Abraxas, and Brendon with the dwarf’s lantern had found nothing but grain and beer, and on seeing Kovid’s slowly fading grip on his anger, decided to wrap up their time in this room before something happened or wandered down the hall. (WMC, Red/black 4).

Time is 11:48.

What next? Kovid failed his Charisma check and his racial hatred for goblins has come to the front. He will WANT to go to that room unless he can be convinced not to – and it is not to parley.
