PBEM - Episode 218. Exploring Caves and Caverns

TWO HUNDRED EIGHTEEN

(I/C)

“I dunno,” Wyn smiled. “It was nice ta not ‘ave ta worry ‘bout gittin killt. Dat was refreshin'ly uneventful. South we go den... du Lac, shall we look ahead a bit? At least till we get ta da stair mayhaps?” He shrugged, “Or do we all go togedder wit our new scouting formation? What ye all tink?”

Giving it some thought, Abraxas answered, "Señor Wyntness, dijo we stay together until we find the stairs. Then perhaps tu y Bransond, o tu y Señor Keviche go scout up a bit. ¿Si?”

Cocking a head in that direction and listening to the chirping sounds echoing in the distance, Brendon had taken his towel out and draped it over his head, wrapping the lower end about his face. “If we’re going to walk south we might agitate the crickets. The crickets don’t sound agitated now, but us stepping on them or Lannis crying,” he jerked a thumb towards the Magic User, “something is crawling up his skirt might draw attention to us. Let’s take it slow going through. No need to alert anyone of our presence.”

Reaching down for the bottom of his robe, Lannis rolled it about halfway up and then passed it under his crotch and around the back of his legs. “If you guys are saying that the north passage is a dead end I trust your opinion. Let's try the other way, see what we can find."

“What are you doing, Big Brain?” Kovid asked, beard pursed as he watched the wizard gather the now raised portion of his robe and began tying it in front of his waist.

“I’m girding my loins.”

“What?”

“Holy Hel, Dwarf. Does beer make you deaf? Girding. Girding my loins.” He tied the knot tight and then again.

“What in Thor’s Wedding Tackle for?”

“So locusts don’t get caught under my robes and have a field day eating me.” He placed his hands on his hips, his pinkish robes gathered about his midsection and upper thighs, revealing his low boot with their folded down leather cuffs, and his thin very pale legs with his lumpy looking knobby knees slightly bowed out.

Brendon shook his head, failing to hide his smirk, “Lannis, don’t crickets and locusts eat plants? You have any ideas on where we might be able to relocate a few to the vine hall? If we did that and the locusts came to investigate, maybe they would call the others to them.”

“You know how they say there aren’t any stupid questions?” Lannis asked sarcastically. “Thanks for proving that little gem wrong.” He pointed south, "Locust swarms don't eat plants. Locust swarms eat everything,” he waved his hands all around, encompassing the hall and the party in it. “And if anyone had figured out how to redirect them, there would be statues of him or her everywhere.”

“So what do we do, oh wise one?” Brendon asked exaggeratedly.

“It’s very simple. They only swarm when they are overcrowded and over stimulated, so as long as there aren’t too many we should be okay."

“Ten minutes in your company should solve their over stimulated problem,” the Scout retorted, getting a single finger salute back from the Magic User. “Real mature.”

“What? Isn’t it the Friendship Finger?”

“Enough,” the Dwarf commanded. “South through the swarm we go then. Should we go in smaller groups? In twos perhaps, twenty/thirty feet apart, going as quietly as we can? Might help keep the creepy crawlies settled."

Lyra shook her head. “Does anyone have any incense left? Or even a good smoky torch might help - now that I think about it. I don’t believe insects love smoke or strong scents scents that are burning. Sometimes smoke is used to fend off insects that are infesting gardens. But either way, Kovid, I vote we stay together.”

The wizard nodded, "I should think that if there are quite a lot of them, single file line, maybe hands clasped, would be a way to go. Create less of a profile and if we need to run we won't be spread out."

“OK,” Kovid clapped his hands together. “Let’s do it. Assholes and elbows people, Thor isn’t gonna wait till Ragnarok for us to get looking. Haw Haw Ha ha!”

“You must be a hit at funerals,” Lannis sighed, moving back while Abraxas and Brendon made their way to the front. Once all in place the party began walking south, eyes peeled and weapons ready.

The passage seemed to “T” at the end of the lantern light and as they drew closer, they could see the eastern corridor only turned south again and dead ended maybe half a dozen paces later on. Some old cut out stone niches where there but they were currently empty. To the west of the T, the passage split again, turning south and the cavernous stone becoming worked castle stone once again as well as continuing west a few paces and then meandering north and west, where the chirping insect sounds were much stronger, louder, and emanating from.

Brendon gave the dead end area and the niches a once over (>Wis +2 thief, Red 11) and saw nothing of interest. The shelf areas were empty and were old, but whatever might have been stored in them had been taken long ago and showed no clues as to what might have been there. Meanwhile the rest of the party looked over the other choice. Looking south we could see stairs going up to the limit of the lantern light, ending at a landing, and then turning west. As for the north west passage, we could see maybe 20 paces or so down and outside of the cricket sounding chirping noise, and quite a bit of it, couldn’t hear or see anything else.

Lyra (<Wis check, White 5) kept walking back and forth from the passage to the stairs and stopping to sniff the air and look around. “What’s going on, Senorita Lighter?” Abraxas asked.

“Its…” she paused, walked back and forth one more time and was carefully smelling and sniffing. “Yep. I’m sure of it. The Jailer?”

“What about him?”

“Well, that same smell. I can faintly scent it coming from up there.” She pointed up the stairs.

“But he was left in the Yail, si?”

“Yes he was,” Lannis nodded. “And Ator dropped a spider in his mouth, I want to remind you. So unless eating a spider when you’re dead allows you to turn invisible and walk past us and go up these stairs, we have one of three choices.”

“They are?” Lyra asked.

“One, you’re a drunk and a liar.”

“Hey!”

“Just an option. Two, the Jailer spent lots of time up there, enough time to leave his oily stinky residue on everything.”

“Umm.. ok.”

“And three. There are other Trogs in this castle, and most likely in that direction.”

“Oh…yuck.”

“Yuck indeed.”

PBEM - Episode 217. Exploring Caves and Caverns

TWO HUNDRED SEVENTEEN

(I/C)

“Hmm,” Lannis tapped his chin, “North seems to make the most sense to me.”

“Why?” Kovid asked.

“Owlbears,” he replied. “They famously hate traveling north, they prefer to flybernate in the south. Anyway, I vote north."

“Why’d I bother asking?” the dwarf moaned. “Strangely though, for completist purposes, I would recommend that way as well.”

Brendon, not extinguishing his torch, suggested, “I’ll scout ahead with Wyn, thus keeping the noise level down while you guys wait for us to return with our report.”

“Yes sir, Captain Fancypants, Sir!” the Magic User saluted.

“Nord we go, Monsieur du Lac.” Wyn reached out for the torch, taking it with a quick thanks. He then drew his sword while Brendon loaded up an arrow and got ready.

“Be careful,” Lyra offered. “Go, scout, return. Orcs are still out there, Owlbear is still out there, and I think we’ve been real lucky lately.”

“You are the glue that holds this group together, Lyra,” Lannis smiled. “I thought it was coming from your hooves. But, no, it’s you.”

"Priestess, keep deze boys in line while we be gone, s'il vous plaît... actually you may want ta calm down a bit. I tink all dat Offop-directed rage may be causing you to grit en grind your teeth too much. Don't want to shatter dem Aine blessed pearls, do you? Feel free to smack him around a bit. I tink it'll make you feel better. I'm sure de odders will hold him down if you asked him nicely.

Wyn smile broadly at Lannis and gave him a wink. Then he turned to Brendon, pointed north with the torch and said, "Allons-y, mon ami. After you."

The group watched them leave, staying at the western end of the great chamber and waited, ears perked. Lannis had bent down as was gathering loose stones when Lyra walked over and stepped on his hand. “Agh!” he barked in pain, getting a series of “SHHHHH!” noises back. “Get your withers and forelocks off my hand your fucking cow.”

She bent low, face partially shrouded in the lantern light, eyes gleaming. “I have one nerve, Lannis. One nerve left. And if you…hit it…with one of those throw rocks…I swear by Aine as easy as a child breathes a wish at a dandelion...is exactly how hard it would be for me to tear your limbs from their sockets and beat you to death with them.”

Both Kovid and Abraxas stood there, mirth in their eyes and mouths agape, while Lannis debated on a comeback before raising his hand slowly and saying, “I know you are not prone to believing me. But I was going to make a line here across the hall to show us if anyone later crossed it and disturbed the rocks.” He swallowed nervously. “That’s all.”

She stayed in his face a few seconds longer and then smiled gently, her features softening. “Good,” she said standing up. “Good. Good idea.” And turned away.

And Lannis for a short moment, felt alone and pretty far from home. “Her nethers are probably soaked with blood at this point,” he muttered to himself, making sure that his voice was pitched low enough that no one else could hear his words.

Meanwhile Wyn and Brendon made their way north, the light from the torch illuminating the cavern walls as they travelled. There were old painted marks on the walls, testament to the elves that lived here long ago, but nothing else of interest. Eventually the cavern opened up to a largish chamber where a number of odd looking toadstools and fungi were growing in old pots set near the corners.

Wyn looked them over while Brendon walked the cavern quietly, the elf (<Int +2 elf nature, Orange 5) confident that the fungus was harmless and naturally growing. Brendon had given the chamber a short walk and knocked on the walls and floor in random places (<Find Traps +20 bonus, Red 41) but from the amount of grit and just basic look of the cavern, was sure that this was a dead end and there was nothing here to concern them.

After a few minutes they looked at one another and pointed back the way they came. The torch was fading and they made it back to the rest of the group as the brand was burning out and shared what they had learned about the end of the northern cave.

“Sounds like a dead end,” Kovid mused, already adding it to his map. “Worth checking out or head south?” What say you all?”

PBEM - Episode 216. Exploring Caves and Caverns

TWO HUNDRED SIXTEEN

(I/C)

After a few moments of silence, Lannis raised his finger and said, “Dibs on the Horse.”

Brendon however already grabbed the horse and the pig carving, looking them over with a critical eye and a smile. “Looking forward to some farming when this is done.”

“I said, Dibs.”

Meanwhile Wyn was looking over the carvings and picked up the one depicting Hoots. “De Jailer do some good work.” He ran his thumb nail absently across the surface and then popped it in his bag. “I take de owlbear figure... hm doesn’t feel like 5 coin weight, but what does Wyn know. Up de stairs now, oui?

What the hell is ‘dibs’?” Brendon scoffed. Turning to the elf he said, “Once we get up there, I think the chapel should be there he first place we go to. As the Jailer’s wife said once ‘they find out we’ve gone they will swarm everywhere looking for you’. They might even figure out we have 3 keys. If there’s a key in the chapel room let’s get it before it’s made impossible for to get.”

“She was a snake haired harridan whose face could turn you to stone, not the Jailer’s wife.” Lannis held his hand out. “And dibs is what I called meaning I wanted the horse and you took it.”

“For someone who claims to be the smartest here, you are awfully childish,” Brendon noted.

“I don’t think I’ve ever said that.”

“HA!” the entire group laughed, momentarily stunning Lannis.

When he regained his equilibrium, he continued, “And anyway, I’ve been too busy fighting monsters and not betraying my friends.” He glowered at Brendon. “Repeatedly.”

“Dis is a very strange conversation,” Wyn observed.

“Right! You’re very busy with horse jokes, braiding hair, playing board games and tossing rocks at Lyra. Too busy.”

“Don’t drag me into it,” the Cleric said, hands up and backing up a step.

“Left the bit and guide rope at home so can’t drag you anywhere, heifer,” Lannis tossed her direction before turning back to the Scout. “EVERYONE was playing board games and I haven’t braided anyone’s hair.”

“Ohh, Ok then!” Brendon waved his hands in the air and wiggled his fingers. Smirking, he said, “You have the hots for her.”

“Whhahhhahat!!???” Lannis gasped, eyes goggling.

“Admit it. You know there are other ways to flirt than what you are trying.”

“First off, that is disgusting. Disgusting. Bestiality is a horrible thing to partake in. Secondly, horses don’t undersand the finer points of flirting. And third. No, No, No I really don’t.”

“Is that what flirting with your mom is like?” The Scout barked.

“Whoa, hitting below the belt there, Brendon,” Kovid whistled.

“Hey, Numbnuts. That’s my mom,” Lannis’ face was growing red, “Is there something I’m missing here? Do you fuck your mom? Is that it?”

“Nice turn around,” the Scout replied, arms folded. “Too bad we all know you sleep with your mom.”

Abraxas was munching on some dried corn kernels from his bag that had gotten too close to the brazier during the night and resulted in them bursting. “Remember when I was concerned that muy was considered loud?” he shrugged.

“Mad, dat was some good times, eh?” Wyn replied.

“Roommate!” Lannis stomped his foot. “She is my Roommate. And you’re the one who is bringing it up.”

“The two of you, knock it the hell off,” Lyra growled, flicking them both in the ear. “If you two ladies are done pissing in the wind, let’s get the show on the road before Corfard and his goons come down here and stomp the tar out the two of you.”

“What did I do?” Lannis pointed at Brendon, “He started it.”

Brendon took the horse carving and shook his head. “You don’t have to be all grabby. Here, take the horse,” he offered it, the wizard snatching it with ill manners. “I’m sure you’ll regale us more with what you think is funny.”

“You should be so lucky.”

Looking over the room one last time, Kovid took the kitten carving off the shelf, frowned at it, then tossed to the stone and stomped on it. “I hate cats,” he muttered. Walking out he handed Wyn his lantern and said, “Here, Elf. I’ll be in the back away from Blinky and Stupid to make sure we don’t get stabbed in the ass.”

“Which of us is Blinky?” Brendon asked.

“Ugh.”

In the hall, Wyn held the lantern up and motioned the group closer. ““Is dis gonna be a scouting ting? Should Monsieur du Lac en I go up de stairs first? Or do we all proceed togedder? I be good either way.”

“Let’s get there and see what the situation looks like first.” Lyra fingered her flail absently. “I suggest whatever we do, it’s purely recon. We go upstairs to visualize what we have on the map and avoid getting into a fight at all costs. While I’m not entirely out of spells, I’m on the lower end and I assume you two are as well?” She asked, getting a nod from Lannis and Wyn.

“Do we head to de Throne Room first? Or to de Chapel?”

Abraxas looked over Kovid’s shoulder at the map, brows furrowed in thought. "If we head straight to the Chapel, we will pass right by Maraballista's room and quite possibly her gato. Shouldn’t we wrap around the other direction primero? B+B place, Guardians, Throne Room? That's my ideas Señor Wynston.”

“All are good ideas. But we need to get up dere an’ see wot is wat as Lyra suggested.” Wyn tapped the map once with his finger. “Remember dat when we pick up de last key, dere will be some wind blowing or someting else dat will alert tings to our presence. My cousins be pretty stupid bout dat... sex elves be tinking too much bout breezin up dere kilts, I tink.”

“Brown chickens. Brown cows,” Lannis commented.

“We may need to rest before approaching Marasball's room. I would love nothing more than to get to that Chapel, pero we may need to carve some space out of that second floor.” The Fighter sighed deeply and nodded. “Perhaps scouting ahead is a good plan, Señor."

“Hokay den.” He gave Lyra a glance. “Wit’ dat flail, Priestesse, if’n we gets into a fight, I would need you to step up wit’ Abraxas an’ hold de line, si vous plait.”

She gave a weak smile. “Happy to do my part.”

“Den let’s get de show on de road.” He nodded to Brendon. “Monsieur de Lac?”

The party made their way south past the Jailer’s room, walking a bit faster as they had already been through here before but still with their eyes peeled and ears perked. The passage turned after some distance and then turned again, making a “J” shape before opening up to the west and back at the Fungus room they had been at earlier in the day. A look around showed that some of the clay pots had been dumped over and smashed, and a glance south down the passage showed that the Shrieker had been badly clawed across its toadstool top and was wheezing slowly, making a raspy whistling sound.

“I’d say Hoots took his frustration out on the mushroom.” Kovid noted.

(WMC: Red/Black 6 – no)

“Is he down there?”

“Nothing there but the water room and Lolth’s statue dumped on its side.”

Lannis frowned, “I hear that. But you didn’t answer. Is. He. Down. There?”

“No way of knowing,” Brendon shrugged.

“You can always go look?” the Wizards offered.

“And you can piss up a rope,” the Scout retorted. “If he’s there, let his stay there. He doesn’t need or want me to come down there and give him a back rub and an I’m sorry that we killed your stinky friend.” He pointed west to the passage there. “Here’s the plan, Wyn and I will go that way and look around a bit and scout like we said we would and YOU can stand here, not be an ass for 5 minutes, and listen if Hoots is down there and if he is,” he dropped his voice. “You don’t attract the angry and very upset Owlbear. Ok?”

“Sheesh.”

“Let’s go, Du Lac.”

Brendon took out his remaining torch and lit it again and then the two men went down the western passage. The rough cavern stones curved a bit to the south and eventually opened up to a “T” intersection running north and south. (<Hear Noise, +20 bonus, Red 10) The listened and walked briefly down each. To the south could be heard the cricket sounds again, a bit louder as we were most likely closer, and to the north was nothing.

The feeling was the north passage went on for a bit and might open up as the echo coming back had a strange reverb to it, and to the south at the limit of the torch light the passage split, going both east and west from what they could tell. Motioning Brendon back a few paces, Wyn waited for the light to fade before his vision flashed over to Infravision and he could see that the corridor was uniform in temperate in all directions with a steady greenish/yellow coloring to it.

Feeling confident, the two went back to the fungus area and the rest of the party to share what they learned.

PBEM - Episode 215. Exploring Caves and Caverns

TWO HUNDRED FIFTEEN

(I/C)

Looking at the three Extra-Healing Potions, the elf placed it back down and glanced at the party. “Wyn does not need a potion. Who be takin deze?”

Kovid shrugged, “I can hold a potion if there are enough to go around, if not that’s okay. I’m not going to drink it now, I can keep going for a bit without it.”

“I think the potions should go to the front line fighters and Lyra,” Abraxas offered, picking one up. “If she goes down, we have grande problemos!”

Kovid took one and Lyra grabbed the last.  “Not that I anticipate needing it, but I’ll hold onto it. Would suck for you guys if I died here.”

“Would suck for you if you died, Priestesse,” Wyn suggested with a smirk. “And are we satisfied wit our check of dis area? If so, let us go see if dat crawler still be dere. Maybe we check de Jailer's cave next, den proceed up?

Brendon perked up, “I’d like to check to see if I can get any poison from the centipede or Goo. I’d be great to dip an arrow into.” He drew his bow and pulled out an arrow. “Jailer cave and then upwards sounds like a good plan.”

"Makes sense to me,” Lannis added, “Plus if we can get those tentacles before someone else does that would be a nice Wyn, er, Win.”

“Indeed,” the elf sighed, “Let’s go.” He took out the ring of keys we had gotten from Travis the Spy. “I will lock de jail door in de way out.

As they moved out, Lyra looked at the Lolthian Flail, swinging it loosely as she walked. “Ugh... so I guess now that I have the mace you’re all expecting me to go to the front. I suppose that... makes sense. I GUESS.”

“Nice of you to join in once in a while,” Lannis suggested.

“Hello, slings?”

“I believe you got pissed at me for chucking rocks.”

“Those were at my head, you moron.”

“Tomato, tomato,” the Magic User quipped.

“You didn’t even bother saying those two words differently,” Lyra complained.

“Because there is only one way to pronounce it.

“Grr,” she growled. “Also... I hate bringing this up but do you guys want me in a different spot when scouting?”

Brendon shook his head. “No, Lady. You’re good where you are.”

“Reminds me,” Kovid asked, “Abraxas, would you mind swapping with me for point just for a bit? I’m still a little beat up.”

“Si, Senor Kristmas. I’ll do.” The two men swapped positions, Kovid taking the back of the party and the Fighter walking point right behind Brendon.

“Regarding the map that the gargoyle drew for us,” Kovid started, “Arik has terrible handwriting, but the third letter is too short. I don’t think this word says baths. And, we’ve already been to the baths downstairs in the Ishtari area. This second word might say bedroom though. I’ve made a note of it. This first word looks like Bent or Bert. Maybe a someone we should be aware of... I don’t know.”

“You and your maps,” Lannis sighed. “Just put your papers away and you can pretend to know what you’re doing later.”

“Maps help, Big Brain. Let us know where we’ve been and an idea of what’s ahead of us.”

“Says you.”

“Anyway, there isn’t many places left on the map for us here to explore. Let’s see what’s left of this main floor. We’ve got to be close to those stairs. After that we can figure out where to rest.”

From the front of the group, Abraxas said, "I dont know if resting anywhere on the second floor is safe. If anywhere IS safe though, I'm guessing it would be the secret area in the Chapel. Pero, pienso that secret may be a small area, mucho pequeño. Not big enough to sleep in. We won’t figure it out standing around here though.”

“Um,” Lyra worried, “Does this mean the Butcher’s is no longer a viable place to stay? If Corfard finds out Arik and the rest of them have left, he might assume the Butcher has as well. Might send people down looking.”

“That is true.”

She continued, “Have we ever thought throwing them off by camping outside of the castle for the night or is that out of the question?”

Wyn nodded slowly, “Worth thinking about when it’s time to rest. We have a few hours now and I am sure dat Hoots is no longer paralyzed. So be aware of de owlbear.”

“Should we leave a trail of food from where we last saw Hoots up to the second floor?” the Fighter suggested. “Maybe we can get him loose up there to cause a ruckus and some destruction as a distraction? Hoots could probably mess up some Gobs, Hobs, and Robs. Could make mess up that Family-er of Marabellis too.”

“One ting at a time, big guy,” Wyn laughed, clapping him on the back.

“When we do get up there,” Abraxas summed up, “I say we start with the Baths, then make our way to those Guardians. Check out the Throne room after that. What about you all? Vamonos amigos."

“Jailer room first,” Brendon whispered, motioning for the group to be silent as they left the Jail hall and were drawing closer to the Jailer’s chamber. “Just up ahead.”

The group drew closer and past the “T” intersection, the lantern light revealed…the owlbear was indeed gone.

And he had vented his frustration on the area.

The Carrion Crawler had been torn to pieces and stomped into the ground, unidentifiable ichor splattered wildly about with the busted segmented body of the colossal centipede as well. There were pieces thrown about and nothing was larger than a double handful, some of it even splattering up on the ceiling and as far as 20’ down the hall.

“Looks like an abattoir,” Lannis muttered.

“Common please,” Lyra whispered.

“Blood soaked.”

“Oh.”

In addition, the thrown weapons we had used (Javelin, dagger, and war hammer) had been broken as well. The javelin’s shaft shattered, the dagger busted in three distinct pieces, and the hammer was bent almost at a 60 degree angle, the head chipped and scarred from beating against the wall. Also, just inside the room the two closest stone statues of hobgoblins had been smashed as well, partially thrown around the room and left on the floor in pieces.

“Ok,” Kovid noted, “Angry owlbears are not something we want to face when angry.”

“Si,” Abraxas bent down to look at the hammer, tried to bend it himself and was unable to. “Si, indeed.” He dropped it back to the floor.

Brendon entered the Jailer’s chamber and looked around (>Wis +2 Thief, +1 familiar, Red 18) for a few minutes but saw nothing outside the norm or expected. Half the party entered and looked about. There was a sleeping area and the reek of the Jailer was redolent in the air (but nausea inducing, just foul). Some chewed bones, dried food stuffs, and bits of wood and tree burls on a small shelf. “Check it out,” the Scout said.

On the shelf were maybe a half dozen expertly carved figures anywhere from eight to twelve inches tall. There was a wooden carving of Hoots from the chest up, a squat keep of some sort, an elven woman’s face (that Wyn and Brendon recognized at Lolth’s face from the cavern further on), a pig with its snout down, a kitten curled up, and a horse about to break into a gallop.

“Very, very good work,” Kovid muttered. “Abraxas, you still have that dog one?”

“No,” the Fighter frowned. “Dirty hobgoblin’s took it from the Barracks.”

“Well, I think the Troglodyte carved these.” He pointed at the pile of whittled wood chips on the ground nearer the smaller bed area. “And I would guess he carved yours as well.”

“Oh,” Abraxas looked somber. “I wondered who it was that carved it.”

“Stinky fucker had a talent,” Lannis offered.

“Yeah.” The Fighter said softly. His voice dropped to a whisper, just for himself to hear. “Another supposed monster who was able to make beautiful things.” He looked around and then walked out of the room. “Uno momento,” he said.

“What’s up with his ass?” the Magic User shrugged, tossing one the statuettes briefly in the air and then absently putting it back on the shelf.

“I tink dat Monsieur Abraxas is ‘aving second thoughts on being an Adventurer.”

“Yeah, I get it. The food sucks, you’re always in danger, something is going to rip out your kidneys through your nipples, and there is never enough arrows or places to rest.”

The group all looked about and glanced at Lannis and then at Abraxas standing stoically by the cavern entrance. And there was little they could say to either man.

PBEM - Episode 214. Respite and Exposition

TWO HUNDRED FOURTEEN

(I/C)

As Moira entered the closest cell and began packing what belongings she had within, Lyra let out a rasping breath. “That was... a lot of information. Thank you for all of that.”

“You are so very welcome, Cleric,” she replied with an impish smile. She pointed to the flail Lyra was carrying, “Use that well. May Lolth and whatever god or goddess you hold dear support you on your journey.” She rolled up three muslin type dresses and tucked them into a carry-all sack. “Anything else you might need to know?”

Lyra shook her head, “Your honesty is immeasurable. I hope you have a safe journey. I’m sure Aine will also watch over you. I’ll let the others ask the questions. They’re better suited than I am.”

“As you wish, Cleric of Aine.”

While all this was going on, Abraxas and Kovid were looking around the cells, knocking on the odd wall, and just trying to see if there was anything outside of the normal showing that might have been missed. “Where do you think you’ll look first for the Ispan’s potential next in line?” Kovid asked Arik as the Gargoyle was sorting swiftly through various stones and tossing every third one into a leather satchel.

“Where ever Lolth guides my steps. But I feel the need to go north.”

"If you're interested,” Abraxas offered, “I hear Jector is a nice place of welcoming types of all sorts. I plan to go there myself after our task here is done.”

“The forces of Jector raided the Dawnlands and set fire to elves and homes in their quest to topple the Ispan 3 decades earlier.”

“Erm, Uh. Yeah, but that was like 30 years ago,” the Fighter pointed out. “I’m just saying, it’s different now.”

Arik shrugged. “If you say.”

“If you make your way there, make sure to look for myself or Hoe-ass, El Carcinera, Standert and Topically. They are all amigos we made while traversing this bastille. I'm sure you will all make amigos buenos.”

Arik stopped working. “So, you didn’t kill the Butcher?”

“Kill?!” The Fighter looked upset. “No! She is so…so…so…” he found himself wringing his hands. “She touched me, deep in my Corazon.”

“And he fuc…” Lannis began but had to stop as Lyra turned and whipped her towel at his face, smothering his next words.

“Ignore him,” she offered, taking the towel off the Magic User’s face and stepping hard on his instep in the process. “He has no control over his mouth. We hope to have it sewn shut when we get back home.”

The gargoyle chuckled, sounding like grinding rocks over hollow logs. “I had the suspicion that there was some carnality involved.”

“Arik,” Moira offered from the next cell, still packing, “Enough. She’s a healthy female who had been without for some time.” The medusa gave Abraxas a steady look. “You hurt her and any part she doesn’t flay out and leave for the crows I’ll turn to rock and grind it up to make sewer bricks out of. Get me?”

Abraxas gave a nervous laugh. “Don’t worry, Senorita Mira. I would never.” He gave a short bow and then turned away, buffeting Lannis with his shoulder as her passed and giving the surprised wizard a death stare as he went to rejoin Kovid.”

“I don’t get what his problem is,” Lannis sighed. “Combination of me being honest and not knowing who the fuck is he talking about? I've never met any of those people."

Wyn had finished his foray around the jails, giving Dingar a wide berth as the Albino Ape was standing near the door marked with a “3”, holding a small sack filled with bruised tomatoes and his other hand was gripping a 15# sledge hammer like one would find in a forge. “Mademoiselle Moira,” the elf began, “I know you are looking to leave, but I did wonder since you brought it up earlier. Where is Seth's hoard of treasure?”

She stopped and pointed back down the hall. “Cell 10, behind the last 6 count who tried to sneak in here and do some snooping about. After giving them the eye, I like to pop them in there to act as guards for Seth’s belongings.”

“May I?” Wyn asked.

“Be my guest. But leave the coin please. I have no interest in sleeping in a drafty barn when there are possible accommodations along the road.”

“And what about Dingar and I?” Arik asked amusedly.

“Dingar does not like beds as we have learned again and again. And as you have pointed out, no one tells a 600 lb Ape where it can and cannot sleep. As for you, dear. You’ll share a room with me as long as you do the double cloak hunchback trick.” She chuckled. “He’s really quite convinceing.”

“Merci,” Wyn replied, taking a look back there. Abraxas and Brendon had joined him, the three of them giving the area a quick look around. “Ta be honest, callin it a "Hoard" mayhaps not be de right name fer it, but we really do need whatever we can get before proceedin upstairs.”

“Seth had a motto,” Arik offered. “Anything that Corfard doesn’t get is good enough for him.”

Wyn did look about back there and there was a large wooden chest with a simple hasp lock on it, no key. “Trapped?” he asked Brednon who was about to search it when Moira popped her head around the corner and laughed. “Why would Seth trap his own chest? And frankly, anyone who could get in here through the locked door would have to deal with the 3 of us, so no. Just take a look.”

Lifting the cover they could see it was filled with a serious amount of copper pieces, and almost half again as many silver and gold. There were a few gems on the top and four count of crystal potion vials. “How much is in here?” Wyn asked.

“Last count?” Moira asked. “A bit over a thousand copper, maybe four hundred silver and perhaps only about 200 gold. As for the gems? You can take them as well as three of the potions.”

Brendon picked up the 3 gems looking them over. “Sapphires,” he muttered (Thief Int>12, no roll), “Nice quality. I’d guess we can sell them for 150 crowns each back at Specularum.”

Meanwhile Abraxas was looking at the potions and smiling broadly. “Senors. Extra-Healing. Each of them.”

“Keep the potions save one. That’s for Dingar in case something goes wrong. Gems you can have. Loose coin we’ll be taking.”

“Gracias.” “Merci!” “Thanks!” (Brendon add 3 Sapphires (150 crown per) [3] to sheet. We’ll divide the 3 Potions of Extra Healing [5] after this turn)

The Medusa and Gargoyle were getting close to finishing up their packing when Wyn, getting a nudge from Brendon, nodded and asked, “Are dere any secret passages or secret areas on the second floor, or leading up to the second floor?”

“Right now? The only way up is the last spiral stairs past Seth’s cave. The others had either been buried or destroyed in the castle’s battering during the Ispan’s last spell. Much the shame.”

“Ah, it seemed odd that we hadn’t found one as of yet,” Kovid grunted.

“Whoever we find to be the new Ispan,” Arik grunted, “Will have his or her work cut out for them getting this place restored.”

“As for secret passages upstairs?” Moira stopped and tapped her chin in thought. “In the Chapel, where the observatory is? Theystra’s? There was a hidden room somewhere there I believe.”

“That’s right,” the gargoyle agreed. “And, at the back of the throne room, behind the Ispan’s chair was a secret hall.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“I’m 3 centuries older than you.”

“Maybe, but I’m prettier.” Both of them laughed, even Dingar gave a grunting hoot once or twice.

Wyn nodded, smiling. “And for my tird question. Mirabellis.”

“What about her?” Moira asked.

“Is there any information about Mirabellis you can tell us that would help us to defeat her?”

“Well. She is a Magister. Of some skill I might add. She has a cruelty to her and delights in the suffering of others. She is also a zealot in regards to Corfard, fascinated with the dragon and what he represents to her. He has gifted her cast off scales and drops of his own blood that she uses to further her spell research and magical enquiries.”

“Sounds…terrible.” Lannis frowned.

“It is what it is.” The medusa shrugged. “For all her skills, she has two weaknesses. One is her familiar. A black cat that can transform into a panther when in her presence. When she’s not around, it is forced back into its cat form and much easier to dispatch. Once her familiar is taken care of she will temporarily lose some of her strength…BUT,” she raised her finger in warning. “Will most likely become horrible unhinged and seek you out immediately as she will know where her familiar just was and who killed it.”

“Lovely.” The wizard frowned. “And the second?”

“She relies on her ring of Spell Turning too often.”

“Ring? What does it do?”

“It bounces any spell that targets her either directly or indirectly, back on the caster.”

“I don’t see how that is a weakness.”

Moira smiled. “She found the ring in the early days of Corfard and his minions combing the castle, taking it from Rowena’s chamber, the Ispan’s Archmage. The ring was already close to being exhausted back then and she has used it at least 4 more times that I know of warding off spell assaults and attempts on her live and person by others either in the Castle or attempting to enter it.”

She waved her hands. “So the Adepts and others know that assaulting her with magic is ill advised and they don’t do it. But the Ring has a finite number of uses before it is exhausted and she does not know it as the ring does not indicate its limit. So if it was me? I would pepper her with whatever simple magics you have until one of them gets through.”

“And then Fireball her,” Arik offered.

“Exactly!” Moira clapped her hands. “Kids and wizards love fireball. They would throw them about every day if they had the chance.”

“Kint argue wit’ you dere,” Wyn laughed. “So…can she cast fireball?”

“Mirabellis? No, not that I’m aware of. Never saw her try.”

“Trust me, Moira, if she could, she would.” Arik had closed his last bag and walked back to Cell 10 where be moved the stone statues aside and picked up the chest there with ease. “Time for us to go.”

“Right.” She looked over the party. “Corfard will learn we have gone. And when he does, whatever safety you think you have will be fleeting at best. He’s a dragon, which means he’s arrogant and believes his own lies that he cannot die.”

“Can he?” Lyra asked.

“Of course he can. All things die in time. Dragons are special though because they never die of old age. They have to be killed from an outside agent. Corfard though believes with all his being that he is on the right of all things. But he is as I said, arrogant. And because of that, he doesn’t ask for help and shuns advice when he should be listening.”

The group was silent, devouring the medusa’s words. “All I’m saying is that once he learns for sure that Seth is dead and we are gone, and I assume he doesn’t know that the Butcher has left?”

“Not that we know, no.”

“Then there you have it, once he learns that this has happened he will be angry and send his Adepts and Hobgoblins to turn over every hall and stone they can to discover where you are and where you are hiding and or sleeping.” She smiled, patting Wyn on the chest. “Don’t be troubled, Sun Child. This won’t happen for many hours and that is a window for you and yours to discover anything left you need to find down here as well as make plans to maybe find a defendable position to weather Corfard’s searchers.”

“We…We will try. Thank you.”

“Lolth guides you,” She said with a wan smile. “As do all the Goddesses.”

“Good luck on you all,” Arik offered. “I hope to come back with the new Ispan and find you have done the work already for us by clearing that Dragon out. Hah ah ah!” he laughed.

Handshakes were given, and Moira brought everyone in for a deep hug, the medusa’s body soft and firm and surprisingly warmer than the party expected. She wiped the bottom of her gauze covered eyes and looked around. “I will miss this place.”

“We’ll be back, Moira.”

She nodded. “You’re right.” Shouldering her pack, her snakes weaving back and forth on her head, she gave one last look. “Good luck again, Adventurers. May you stay strong, for the strong survive. And I so duly hope you do.”

And with that, we watched them walk out of the jail, and turn towards the west and eventually the front portcullis to leave. And the party was alone in the Jail, look at one another, and deciding what they were going to do next.

PBEM - Episode 213. Respite and Exposition

This could have been a fight and if so, the party would have had to deal with a medusa. However, it worked out that there was some conversation and then some good rolls and questions and back and forth so it was here that I gave the exposition as to what the background of the Ispan's castle was and how Corfad figured into it all. Overall, it was a long post but I think it went very well towards explaining the adventure and some of what's waiting for them upstairs.

Follows:

TWO HUNDRED THIRTEEN

(I/C)

As they walked down the long hall towards the Jail, they could hear a rattling sound ahead and the sound of a heavy door opening. A female voice called out in a strange language and Arik the gargoyle responded in kind. Letting the group know that earlier when they had listened up here, it was these two talking and their voice and language they were speaking.

After a moment the female responded again in Common, “So sorry. Arik and I just often talk in my own language as it is easier. Please, come in. Dingar, go place them near number 6, would you be a dear?” The Ape grunted once and trudged in, Brendon and Lyra in his grasp. The rest of the party followed or was carried and we had a chance to see the last person in question.

And it was a medusa.

She had a grey gauze bandage wrapped around her head covering her eyes, giving Lannis and Wyn the vague impression of her eyeballs beneath it , but saving them from her debilitating gaze. She was just under 6’ in height and had a head of weaving snakes for hair, coiling and hissing, tongues flashing as they tasted the air of the group’s passing. She was wearing a purple and ivory dress and shift that was both billowy and showed her ample charms beneath. Her skin had a greenish cast to it and she appeared to be muscular and fit. She had a set of legs and not a snake’s tail, but her legs were scaled in a diamond emerald green and red pattern. Her lips were red and her teeth white and she genuinely seemed very pleased to see the group. And sure enough, she had a Stylized “L” just over her left breast with the number 10 beneath it. “Lolth’s Blinded Ninth Eye,” she swore. “As I live and breathe. An elf!”

“The Goddesses have certainly made us wait long enough, Moira.”

“Indeed.” She looked at the two of them and said, “Please. Come. You are safe here for a short while and we can wait for your friends to recover.”

Lannis stammered and swallowed, nodding rapidly. “Ah, yea, thank you for the invite. Nice jail you have here...are you going to kill us? If I get a vote I'd rather you didn't.”

She laughed and it sounded like tinkling glass, her deep voice was filled with mirth. “I’ll take your vote under advisement, Magister.” She waved for him to relax. “But we are not looking to kill you.”

"Merci beaucoup for yer help, Arik en Dingar, and Mademoiselle Moira. En tank ye all yer hospitality. After our negotiations broke down wit Monsieur Jailer, tings got a bit.... complicated.”

The medusa smiled, “Negotiations with Seth are typically fairly easy once you learn that he says what he means and expects the same from those dealing with him.”

“Moira, he’s dead.” Arik dropped the Troglodyte to the floor with a wet thud.

“Oh.” She shrugged. “Well, then I assume the complication has been solved then.”

The gargoyle shrugged. “He had become more inflexible as of late, Moira.”

“Something we had warned him was going to come and bite him on the ass at some point.” She took a deep breath, making her dress rise and fall enticingly, and then smiled again. “Seth had certainly supported the Goddess Lolth and defended her charges, So I am sure he is whisking on his way to his reward.”

Wyn nodded. “Speakin’ of the Monster Goddess, iffin doze orcses had shown up we'd not be in any shape ta deal wit dem. Lolth has dealt us quite de interesting hand today..."

“Very true, Sun Child. But the strong survive and the weak get devoured. Since Arik found you and the dragon’s hunters did not means that you might still have a part to play.”

"I cen't speak on behalf of all of mes amis, er um, my friends... but iffin dee be someting I cen do for you please let me know. I cen't promise I'd be able to do it, as I just be a single elf, but I'd be will in' to listen en see iffin my help cen be given where applicable."

“Amicable and appreciated,” she replied.

"I tink my friends be like dis fer anodder  25 minutes..." he looked over, catching Kovid's eye roll in his peripheral vision, "Hm... maybe 30 minutes or so. Maybe we talk more den, oui?"

“As it stands, Sun Child, that is fine,” Arik replied, the Gargoyle entering one of the many cells in the area and coming out a moment later with a fat black spider. “We have time.” He bent low and forced the Troglodyte’s mouth open, then he placed the spider within and closed the jaw carefully trapping it inside.

Wyn swallowed and stepped closer. "Would you mind if I look over de Jailer, er um, Seth? He might have sometin’ useful my friends en I cen use."

The Gargoyle shrugged and stepped back, wings unfurling and furling again. “You are welcome to, but I can tell you that he carried very little as it was often fouled by with body’s secretions. Most items of value we stored here for him. Safely out of the way and no one would dare to enter.”

“I kin unnerstand dat.” Wyn looked over the Jailer anyway hoping to find anything of interest but had to concede that Arik seemed to be right and was trying to figure out how to ask to see the Jailer’s items here without looking like a terrible guest to these three stronger and deadlier figures. “I’ll shelve dat for now,” he muttered.

As for the area, there were 10 cells in the jail area, each one about 10x10’ and each with a door that was numbered 1 through 10. However the cells were not locked and the contents were clean, bedding was padded and sheets, and there was little sign of decay, rot, or misery. Small pots of fungus were laid out decoratively and in the far cell at the end was a half dozen statues of hobgoblins and goblins frozen in terror. Lannis gave it a brief glance and stepped away. On the far west wall though was a hole in the wall where a stout rope snaked out and was connected to a bell mounted in place. “Where is that bearded drunk’s map,” he muttered, looking through Kovid’s belongings until he could see the map and guessed that the alarm rope at the entrance room most likely lined up here. “Hey, Medu…Moira?” he asked. “What’s this rope and bell for?”

The medusa stepped closer and Lannis stepped back until his back hit the wall and he had to stop, glancing at her toes, her chest, her feet, the wall, and finally a place about two feet to the right of her right shoulder. “That is an alarm bell. Typically Mirabellis, the dragon’s sorceress, will summon me to meet her there to help prevent any problems that are looking to enter the Ispan’s Castle.”

“Ah…I assumed so.”

As time passed and there was some general chit chatting back and forth (Cha Check: <Wyn Orange 6 (beat by 5 – perceived friendly), <Moira Green 2 (beat by 7 – perceived as very nice and super friendly), and <Arik White 7 (beat by 3 - good feeling) ) the group all got more comfortable with one another as there was a surface level sharing of thoughts and stories, no side interested in telling too much but not willing to either be first to give up too much information or commit to taking the first step.

As the paralysis was starting to wear off and the rest of the group was making noises and easing themselves out of their awkward positions, there was fresh round of reintroductions (not entirely needed on the paralyzed four as they could hear all that had transpired but not communicate) until everyone had a chance to break for lunch and talk amongst one another, Wyn sort of driving the conversation.

The Gargoyle gravitated to the dwarf, settling near him with a bowl full of loose gravel and popping them in his mouth one at a time to crunch down hard and chew on them. “Want one?” he asked in passing.

“Ha. Too tough for my tastes,” he took out a strip of rations and proceeded to chew it. “You have my thanks Arik Lolthschild, I was as stiff as Thor’s man hammer.”

“You did seem a bit sedentary,” the gargoyle replied with a smile.

“It was a tense situation we had been in.”

“But you stayed solid when it counted.”

“Don’t want to be accused of being inflexible.”

“I won’t think of you as being pliant, Master Dwarf.” The two of them chuckled as they talked.

“A Rik,” Brendon said with a grin, “I appreciate your help in moving us to safety. I hope I can return the favor.”

“You never know, Master Human,” the Gargoyle replied. “I hope so. For a little while.”

“Why is dat?” Wyn asked.

Arik flexed his wings. “Well, with Seth killed and the ward coming down, I have no reason to stay here anymore. As Lolthschild, my first duty is to the Ispan Halgafar and since he is gone, I will have to look for the next possible in succession.”

“I wanted to ask dat,” the elf went on. “’Ow long ‘ave you been ‘ere? Were you frozen in place when the barrier went up?”

“Well,” Arik tilted his head back. “Me? I’ve been here for just over 3 centuries as ward of the Ispan, Sun Child. Typically Lolth would gift the people of Acreage with another blessed guardian in times of strife and trouble.” He pointed to Dingar. “My friend over there was the second, has to be close to a century and a half.”

“I didn’t know apes live that long,” Lannis asked.

“Not typically, no. But Dingar had been touched by Theystra after his birthing and his aging has been slowed accordingly.”

“I myself didn’t come along until right after my sister and maybe 2 years before the forces from Jector attacked.” Moira had her legs folded under her butt and her dress smoothed out in front of her, casually splitting a large rat down its back and delicately stripping off pieces of its flesh and eating them raw one at a time.

“You sister, she was a medusa like you or a sister in the sense there was another female who was the daughter of Lolth?”

“No, she was a medusa, like me.” She smiled at Wyn. “Hot headed and opposite of me in temperament as all good sisters are prone to being.”

The elf sighed, “We…er…we found de remains of your sister, marked with de “L10” and a priestess of Theystra.”

Moira stopped and Arik did as well, staring. “You did? Here, in the castle?” she frowned deeply, digging her nails into the palms of her hands.

“Oui. Did someting happen to cause a falling out between some of Lolth's children and the elves that used to live here?”

The Medusa’s snakes were writhing about, testament to her state of mind and anguish she was feeling. “He just lies, you know that Arik?”

“I know he does, my friend. I told you not to get your hopes up.”

“That…that…that WORM.” Her hand clenched and she burst the giant rat with a wet pop, spraying gore about her. Absently she licked her hand clean and sighed. “I am..I am sorry for my outburst. But it seems the dragon has lied to us again.”

“So I take it you didn’t know your sister was dead?”

“Nope, neither did I know that she was still here in the castle.”

It was quiet, broken only by the sound of Lannis giving a brief cough, and Dingar the Albino Ape eating a large tomato happily, chewing it and letting the juices run down his chin.

“Moira?” Arik asked.

“Yes, my friend. I’ll go with you.”

The gargoyle smiled. “Fantastic. It is for the best. We have a sacred duty to defend the Ispan and his castle, charged by the Goddess herself…”

She laughed again, “I know, I know. You don’t have to preach to me. I know what drives me.” She looked over the party. “To answer your question, Sun Child, yes, there was a perceived falling out which also ties into the situation now.”

“How would that be?”

The Medusa stood up and paced slowly, hands folded behind her back as she walked, getting into her tale. “Before I was birthed and before my sister was as well, the Ispan’s forces had entered into a mutual trade and protection treaty with a Dragon, Myrian, from the Southern Reaches. She was an older and wily dragon with a younger dragon child she was rearing.”

She turned and strode back down the hall the other way, he group watching her and listening. “She had some tomes in her hoard that she had brought to the Halgafar’s sages, tomes that she had gathered from some raiders earlier on. The pages were humanoid flesh and they were penned in elvish. The sages read them and informed the Ispan that they were tomes from a deviant offshoot of the elven people that had turned their gaze from the Sun and dwelt in darkness below.”

“Through it all, Myrian was watching and listening, adding in small bits of details about the raiders, doling them out like bread to a starving man.” Moira frowned. “She wove a fanciful tale about deceit and lies, fell magics and elves with skin blasted black, and on top of it all, the twisted society embraced evil and decay. And Lloth was their principle Goddess.”

“Lolth?” Wyn asked with a frown.

“Lloth.” She replied, emphasizing the slightly different pronunciation. “The Dawnlands was established centuries earlier by the Ispan and his people on the balance of the four primary Elven Goddesses and their aspects: The Princess Morrigaan and her bountiful harvests, The Goddess Theystra and her sway over all lights, The Queen Lolth and her defending children, and the Mother Ishtari and her all encompassing magics. Each one is a pillar to support and strengthen all elves that live here.”

“What Myrian did though, was she did what dragons always do. She meddled. Meddling creatures, they are always looking to weaken and devour through guile and trickery at first, then fire and force later. Myrian did NOT want to be in an even pact with the Dawnlands and the Ispan. She wanted it be as she perceived it, with her the superior force and the elves the weaken supplicants.”

“So she did it by introducing enough doubt that the Ispan discussed with his people and council the fact that Lolth might not be the beneficial Queen that they had always thought. But instead a deceiver waiting to destroy them.”

“So they reduced her power and removed her presence from the Grotto and relegated her to stand alone until the matter could be resolved.”

The group was quiet, riveted as they listened. “What happened next?” Lannis asked.

Arik shrugged. “Elves don’t make snap decisions, so it was a decade of thought and discussion before they removed her from the Grotto. This…upset all of us. As Lolth’s Children, we have a love for the Ispan and his charges and we could not connect the duality of wanting to defend the elven lord and the people and the possibility that our Mother was false and untrue.”

“My sister took it poorly,” Moira continued. “She somehow over time turned her love of the Ispan to hatred for those who spoke out against Lolth. The high priestess of Theystra was the most outspoken as with Lolth’s diminishing, the Theystran contingent saw an uprise in power and prestige. Very often, the words were heated and tempers were…raw.”

“Then what?” Lyra prompted.

“Then? About 2 weeks before the forces of Jector dared to attack the Ispan had gotten word of their buildup of armies at the border of the Dawnlands. But they were coming up from the Southern Reaches, Myrian’s domain. It seemed the Dragon had made a deal with their leaders to provide a cover for them to attack through her realm and bypass the elven defenders and keeps on the eastern domain. In short? She betrayed the Ispan.”

“That bitch,” Lyra growled.

“Indeed.” Moira sighed. “The Ispan’s Archmage, Rowena, took a group of her most promising Adepts and teleported to Myrian’s cave where they did terrible battle with the Dragon and eventually smote her, killing her right in front of her child.”

“Corfard?” Wyn guessed.

“The same.” She frowned. “He had been rendered weakened during the battle and unable to help and was forced to watch as Rowena had his mother killed. They then took her heart from Myrian’s chest and the few wizards and magisters still standing teleported back to the Ispan’s Castle and presented it to him.”

“Then what?”

“Then? Then it was the slow grind as the goblinoid forces marched across the Dawnlands and ravaged the countryside, ending up right outside Acreage when the Ispan and what forces, priests, and mages he still had left tried to enact the Rainbow Ward. But without the support and full might of all the followers of the four Goddesses, the spell went awry and blighted the land as well as killed the goblins attacking.”

Arik took a deep breath. “It took a decade to decide that the Lolth was not to be fully trusted and her priests and priestesses had been left out and shunned. It was going to take another decade to reintroduce them and take care of whatever reparations they might have wanted or needed. A decade the Ispan did not have. Much to the countryside’s detriment.”

“Corfard has been biding his time. Waiting for Jector’s forces to grow once again. Waiting for those in power to fade out and other goblinoids to take over. Those who don’t remember the brief treaty they had with his mother Myrian and how it ended up being to their doom as well. And then using what hoard he had to spread the idea of an expedition back to here. To expand the borders of Jector. To maybe find some elven treasures and bring it home. And the leaders of Jector? It cost them nothing to find volunteers or those they don’t want and send them west to here to either help the dragon on his quest or fail. They get paid either way. He succeeds and they all get rich. He fails and it’s ok, they got paid anyway.”

“And his lie to you?”

“He had indicated that his auguries indicated that my sister had escaped the Rainbow Ward and was out there somewhere. And if I just stayed on for another few months he would make sure I was outfitted and paid well and could go and find her.”

“But?”

“But, she is dead,” Moira sighed deeply, wiping the bottom of her gauze covered eyes as they grew moist. “And he lied.”

Arik stood up. “I had been staying here to support Seth. He had an understanding of us and defied Corfard. Our presence gave him weight and control. With him gone, I will go out and find the next in line for the Ispan’s throne, guided by Lolth’s will. It may take months or years, but Lolth will find a way.”

The Ape, Dingar stood up and grunted. “I won’t go without you, my old friend,” the gargoyle smiled.

“And I too shall go. Corfard lied, and Mirabellis can deter possible intruders on her own.”

“So…”

Moira smiled. “The dragon and his minions will learn in due time what has happened to Seth. They will come here in time and then learn that we have gone. This will happen. But not for some hours, so you have some time on your side.”

“Use it well,” Arik suggested. “It isn’t much, but here is a crude representation of the second floor.”

“I assume you are looking for the Vault and the Crown?” Moira asked.

“Our mission is only to retrieve someting from the castle and leave,” Wyn suggested.

The Medusa smiled. “So like a Sun Child, saying but not saying. I‘ve missed talking to you and your kind,” she caressed his cheek, her fingers rubbing just under his chin. “Whatever you look for, I would suggest you go to the Throne Room. The lock is stout and the doors are thick. But the Eye of Ishtari is there. And that is what is powering the Rainbow Ward.”

“Why hasn’t Corflarg removed it himself?” Abraxas asked.

“You need either the Ispan to remove it, or a representative from the four Goddesses to do so.” She looked over the party, “To remove it from the throne without blowing yourselves up, I see the Rod of Ishtari, the Scythe of Morrigaan, the Flail of Lolth, and the Hammer of Theystra. Can’t find a better representation of the four Goddesses than those who wield their weapons.”

She smiled broadly. “Anything else we might answer for you? Now that I am no longer bound here, I have little desire to stay. I too can feel a calling. A call as if Lolth is guiding my steps.”

PBEM - Episode 212. Respite and Exposition

TWO HUNDRED TWELVE

(I/C)

Seeing the horror stalking towards them, oozing its way past the paralyzed Abraxas, struggling to turn over, Lannis stepped just ahead of Wyn with his Ishtari Rod at the ready, his Shield spell still scintillating around him.  "If this doesn't kill it,” he said, “you have the better chance of getting away to save us..."

Wyn had another arrow ready, nodding at the Magic User’s back. “Will do, mon ami.”

As he readied to shoot, he added, “Oh! Wyn! If I don't make it, I need you to do something for me.”

“We’ll make it, Monsieur Offop.”

“I hope. But in case it all goes nipples up, before all this paralysis wears off, spend a few minutes bouncing pebbles of Lyra’s helmet rack."

“Ugh,” the elf replied, drew back, centered his shot, and fired (>+5 to hit, Orange 14) and the arrow buried itself in the less armored underside of the Crawler (1d6 Damage: Orange 3). “Gotcha fucker.”

From down the hall they heard a rumbling laugh and a deep voice answer, “You’re almost there. Keep going.”

“Um…who the fuck is that?” Lannis asked.

“I dunno. Fuck. Merde. Crapsicle.” Raising his voice Wyn called out, “Bonjour, stranger. We be wit you in a second... just need to clean up sometin Monsieur stinky Jailer left fer us. Please be careful, as dis ting can paralyze you if you get too close.”

“Maybe you, but not I,” the figure replied, they could see wild wings and horns in the shadows down there as it moved a bit closer. “Surivival of the fittest and the stronger will prevail. I’m content to watch.”

“Yeah, this is just wonderful,” Lannis grumbled, raising the rod up and fired (1d3+1 bolts, d6 Pink 2: 1+1 = 2 bolts. +5 to hit: >Pink 15, >Pink 17), the counter on the rod dropping to “12”. Two dull silvered shaft blasted out, one hitting Good deep in the flank and the other blasting it in the center place of mass and killing it (1d6 Damage: Pink 1 and Pink 6 and killed!).

Seeing the ichor blast off the walls and run down the floor, Wyn and Lannis glanced at each other and keeping their weapons out but lowered, headed towards the figure in the light and their friends still held in place.

Where they saw a lizard looking humanoid with a set of wide wings and a pair of majestic horns. But was made entirely of stone. At over 7’ in height and holding a windlass style heavy crossbow with a bolt loaded but HIS weapon also pointing down, it had a cross strap running diagonally down its chest where they could see a short quiver at its waist..and on its chest was a stylized “L” with the number 1 burned into the stone.

(Reaction Check: 4+5 +1 bonus elf = 10 – friendly and wary)

“Bless. My. Gods,” it answered with eyes wide, “Lolth be praised, a child of the Sun. An elf.” He bowed his head lower and lifted it again abruptly. “Damn these old eyes, Sun Child, but it’s been a long time for me.”

“Er…Aye,” Wyn nodded back. “I am Wyn D’Endee. An deez,” he waved his hands indicating the paralyzed party and Lannis standing behind him, “are my friends and companions.”

“A hearty welcome to you then, Sun Child.” He looked around at the carnage. “Ah. Damn.” He glanced at the Jailer, “Seth finally got the better taken of him.” He seemed to sigh, his chest making a rumbling sound like shifting stone. “That’s gonna suck.” He bent low, placing his hand on the jailer’s chest, “May the Goddess light your way to the Queen’s court, my friend. Find peace in the afterworld that you couldn’t in this one.”

He stood up and cocked his ear. “This fight will not be unnoticed for long.” He looked at the paralyzed party members. “We leaving them to die or you want to bring them someplace safe? I have no interest in staying here and we cannot leave the Jailer here. Need some time to figure out the repercussions on all of this and thinking quick,” he chuckled, knocking he stone head, “is not my forte.” He hoisted the Jailer up on his shoulder and looked back.

“We, we would like to save them.”

“Excellent,” the gargoyle answered. “Pardon my manners. I am Arik. Arik Lolthschild. First of her Brood, and Blessed Ward of the Ispan Halgafar.” He turned back and whistled down the hall where a huge albino ape loomed into view. It was a match for the one the group had fought in the catacombs near Ishtari’s Chambers, but this one had an “L” and a “2” on its chest (the other had a “3”). Standing at over 600 lbs, it stalked closer and Arik pointed to Brendon. “We’re saving them, Dingar,” he said, and the ape seemed to understand him. “Take the humans…CAREFULLY…and bring them back to the Jails.”

He stopped in front of Hoots, the Owlbear’s eyes still red and wildly angered looking. “Hoots, after a little time standing here you can calm down and decide to stay or not. But if you stay, remember the Queen is always watching, Lolth knows what you do. So accord yourself properly.”

“Can we kill it?” Lannis asked.

“No,” Arik answered, hand still on his crossbow. They watched as the ape effortlessly picked up Brendon and then stopped and also picked up Lyra right after in its other arm and then plodded north. “Want to fight Hoots in combat, that’s fine. Strongest survives. Strike it down while frozen and can’t defend? That’s not Lolth’s way. And say what you want, Human. Right now it’s Lolth that is watching you over.” He pointed north. “Let’s go. One of you drag the human, I’ll drag the dwarf, the last of you take the lantern and that light stone. Want nothing here that shows magic or gives Corfard’s minions any idea on directions we are going to go.”

“Tracks?” Wyn asked.

“I’ll take care of that.” He waited while Wyn leaned Abraxas down and proceeded to drag him, and Lannis policed the area, leaving the Centipede and the Crawler still here as well as what blood and drag marks were visible. Once they were north past him the gargoyle stared at the ground and concentrated, and the group could feel the stone vibrating subtly…flattening out their tracks and obscuring their passage.

“Tres bien.”

“I have my uses, Sun Child.” He pointed north. “Let’s go. Moira’s gonna want to meet you.”

“Moira?”

“Friend of mine. Number 9.” He snapped his fingers. “Reminds me,” He raised his voice. “Moira! Gauze blindfold please. Cover up those Baby Blues!” He smiled. “Stone skin, I always forget.”

Wyn and Lannis glanced at each other, feeling real uncomfortable as they followed the Albino Ape carrying their two friends towards the Jail area of the map while a Gargoyle with Kovid, the Jailer, and a heavy crossbow was walking behind them.

Time now is Day 6, 12:26 PM

(OOC)

Ok! Arik is taking you all, paralyzed and now, along with another Albino Ape, north to the Jails. Jailer is with you (very dead) and he seems to be happy to see the elf. What would you like to talk about? Say? Questions? Rest of the group assume to be unfrozen in 30 minutes. So let me know!

PBEM - Episode 211. Jailer, Hoots, CC, and Goo.

Party was down to 2 active combatants at the end of this turn and the WMC came up. However, it was the best choice and actually ended up in their favor. I did red herring it though and made them think it might be Corfard. As per Discord though, that was quickly discarded.

No pics on this one as I had done it at work given that one of the turns hadn't been sent to me until REALL late at night.

Follows:

TWO HUNDRED ELEVEN

(I/C)

Wyn loaded up another arrow, trying to find a place that would do the most damage agasint Goo. “Dis day not be our day, eh Salazar en Offop? Crack de lightnin en bring de pain, mes amis!”

Holding the Ishtari rod shakily in front of him as the Carrion Crawler skittered down the hall like some demented nightmare, Lannis called out, "This is...bad. Okay you asked for it, I'm about to moneyshot Goo in the face!"

“Go for it!” Abraxas cheered.

(1d3+1 bolts: Rand 2 – 3 bolts. @+5 to hit, >16, <3, >17) The Magic User squeezed the magic weapon and it responded with three streaking screaming bolts of dull silver. The first one blasted against the Crawler’s head and blasted chitonous shell in all directions, the second ricocheted off it’s back, and the third found purchase between a gap in its rear protection and burrowed deep into the soft flesh beneath. (1d6 Damage: Rand 6, Rand 2 – take 8 Damage!) The Crawler let out a shrieking spittle filled blast of pain as it spasmed in agony.

“And…away!” Wyn cheered taking aim and firing (<+5 to hit, Rand 9) the arrow hitting it and digging in, but not getting to the body underneath.

"I've never been a huge fan of most creepity crawlies, definitely not a fan of this one. “ Abraxas was watching the Crawler with a critical eye, stone dagger hoisted back to throw. “Hey Bransent!” he called out to the paralyzed and sleeping Scout, “Still want Goo as a pet? What you think?” He laughed to himself, “Anyways... como dices... 'keep on chucking'!” and hurled the dagger (=+4 to hit, Rand 13) where it skittered along Goo’s side, tearing the flesh there (1d4 Damage: Rand 3) and making the Crawler spew ichorous spittle in fury.

“Um, Guys,” Lannis noted the Crawler was starting the build up speed. “Let’s go!” The three of them started skipping backwards away from the Crawler moving as far as they could until they were just outside the ring of light, standing in the darkness with the Lantern, the Light spell, and the Light Rock illuminating the Crawler as it charged towards us, pink tentacles flailing.

“Behind me!” Abraxas ordered, whipping his Scythe off his back and standing in front of Wyn and Lannis, the Fighter a dark shape with a silver scythe in his hand, warding the group from the horror stalking them.

“What do we do if this fails?” Lannis worried, looking behind him at the cloying darkness. “It’s gonna be dark as shit if we take 2 more steps.”

“Don’t worry,” Wyn assured him, “I kin see in de dark.”

“Yeah, but WE can’t!”

(Morale check: Random 4+3 – 7 – stays! Ugh - sorry)

(Initiative check: Party Rand 4 vs Monster Rand 5 – ugh!! So sorry!)

(WMC: Rand 1 – ARGHHHGHGH!! SOO SORRY!!!. What: Rand 5 – Ah! Neat!. Qty – only 1. Distance? Rand 2d6x10: 4+5 = 9x10 = 90’.)

And then the Crawler raced down the hallway with an ear splitting scream. Standing there in front of the other two party members, Abraxas held his own as the badly wounded Crawler hit him like a flailing rail car. (+3 to hit, Rand: >17, <13, <13, >19, <1 FUMBLE, <4, <2, >14) He twisted and spun, Morrigaan Scythe dancing all over to block and deflect the Crawler’s attacks. There was the sound of metal drumming at it slapped against his breastplate and leggings. It tried to charge past and engulf Lannis in its fleshy grip but Abraxas buried his foot on its midsection and bodily grappled it back in front of him. As it was losing momentum it (1d3 Fumble Check: Rand 3 – tripped!) suffered a massive kick from Abraxas and actually fell over, its pale yellowy white underbelly facing up as its last tentacle caught the Fighter across the cheek (3 Saves vs Petrif/Poly: Rand: =12, >15, <6) where he slowed down and finally froze in place, paralyzed!

Lannis and Wyn stood there horrified at the edge of the darkness as the bleeding Crawler was bouncing wildly, legs flashing about, making an effort to right itself up again.

Meanwhile Kovid and Lyra were paralyzed but able to see and hear, the sounds of battle drawing distant and sounding terrible. They could see Brendon on the other side of Hoots, eyes closed and frozen in place, the Owlbear’s eyes were bloodshot red and scanning all over, the hatred coming off its frozen form. But in the gloom beyond the Scout, a tall shadowy figure was drawing nearer, head hunched, long horns on its head, and a set of wings slightly unfurled making long shades on the walls behind it. “Well, well, well,” it said in a very deep voice tinged with humor. “What in the Gods names do we have going on here?” Its chuckling was deep and sounded like stones being ground underfoot.

Time now is Day 6, 12:16 PM

(OOC)

Alrighty. I never tell you but the Crawler has 8 hit points left! Let’s pull this out. Bottom of the 6th round. Lannis and Wyn. You guys are actually just past the visible light in the corridor south of the Jailers. As for the others, something big sounding with wings and horns is coming towards you from the north corridor and is still just in the shadows there. Ok! Good luck!!!!

PBEM - Episode 210. Jailer, Hoots, CC, and Goo.

TWO HUNDRED TEN

(I/C)

"Everybody back up!” Lannis called out, hands spraying sparks and he began chanting. “I have a plan that Brendon is going to hate."

Seeing the Magic User was looking at the Scout and the elf recognizing the spell being cast, his brows rose up as he nocked another arrow and started skipping backwards, the rest of the group following alike.“Oh, dat be an interestin’ work around, Offop. Bravo. Hope it works!”

“Don’t compliment him,” Lyra replied, readying the Flail for a burst of attacks. “His ego goes to his head and I doubt it can get ANY bigger.”

Wrapping up the spell, watching the Crawler make its way closer to the party, Lannis retorted, “Egos don't take up physical space and thus could grow to infinite size. That said, my ego is normal sized at worst, likely much smaller than normal." His fingers flashed with a coursing of power and he shouted out, “ZU!” as the smell of rose petals blew out and the spell struck…Brendon!

(4d4 hd: 3+1+1+2 = 7) The Scout was wheezing and whimpering and then while paralyzed, fell asleep, and the radiant spell flew out hit Goo…and the Crawler didn’t stop at all.

“Merde!” Wyn cursed, drew back, and fired (<+5 to hit, Orange 3), the arrow going just over the Crawler’s back and lost down the hall in the darkness.

"Nice try, Big Brain,” Kovid sighed, spinning one of his normal warhammers and arcing it back over his shoulder. “Don't let it eat Brendon folks!" and HURLED (<+2 to hit, Yellow 13) cracking into the Crawler and briefly making it rear up, but it landed on its many jointed legs and let fly a spray of spittle as it continued its approach.

Having one of his stone tipped Javelins poised, Abraxas looked at Lannis and shrugged. "Señor Leinsis, lo siento, perhaps you need to turn your majik off and then on again?" He let the short spear fly (<+4 to hit, Blue 9) cracking against Goo’s shell but not penetrating.

“That’s not how it works!”

“He did at least put Brendon to sleep, so the spell technically did work.” Lyra waited to the last moment and then as the Crawler drew close, stepped out and swung the flail around, cracking it against Goo’s side with a silvery sounding CLANG. (>+1 to hit, White 17) “Whohoo!” she cheered as the Crawler pitched over, tentacles briefly going limp (1d6+1+1-1 Damage, White 5 – 6 Damage!). It righted itself and moved into attack position, the Cleric and Dwarf closest to it as it slapped and smacked its own tentacles against the two of them.

(Attacks on Lyra, +3 to hit: >15, =13, <7, <6) Lyra ducked and dodged, shield raised to block, the tentacles smacking against her legs and torso where they got past her defenses (2 Saves vs Petrif/Poly: >White 17, and >White 18). But the Cleric fought through the nerve agent that was spraying about and continued to rain blows on the Crawler.

(Attacks on Kovid, +3 to hit: <11, <9, >16, >15) The Dwarf though had readied another hammer and was also trying to get a blow on the Crawler as its flailing tentacles cracked like hail on a tin roof against his platemail. He grunted in surprise as one caught him blindly on the face (2 Saves vs Petrif/Poly: >Red/Green 20). “Ha! Tastes faintly like berries,” he joked as he fought on (<Yellow 2) but a flashing smack near his neck had the residue freeze the dwarf in his tracks, hammer upraised and paralyzed (Kovid Paralyzed 50 minutes).

“Fucking bullshit!” Lannis cursed, mentally tallying his diminishing repertoire of spells.

“Oy... I tink dis be just like cookin’ up a gumbo ov dire crawdads... ,” Wyn mused. “If yah stab em in da brains just right, de meat get niiiice en tender. Not dat I’d recommend eatin dis ting, but lets killt it dead, oui?

“It’s ok,” Lyra replied confidently. “There are 4 of us and I’ve proven that it can be hit and hurt. By Aine, let’s do this!”

(Initiative: Party Steel 2 vs Enemy Red/Black 4)

“And there it is,” Lannis sighed. “This year is just the worst.”

Goo pressed forward, its tentacles now capable of hitting both Lyra and Abraxas – the two of them plying weapons to hit it and blocking what blows they can. (Attacks on Lyra, +3 to hit: >19, <5, <6, <11) This time Lyra was better able to deflect as many of the attacks as possible, but a rather heavy hit on her leading leg had a heavy dose of slime get through her pants and touch her skin (Save vs Petrif/Poly: <White 2) and she frowned as her limbs froze up, cursing just once, “Damn it,” before unable to move (Lyra Paralyzed for 50 minutes).

(Attacks on Abraxas, +3 to hit: >18, <7, <4, <7) The Fighter grunted as he brought his Scythe about, knocking tentacles aside as he struggled to get it lined up for a barrage of attacks. However before he could do so, he could feel some of the residue land cooly on his exposed skin (Save vs Petrif/Poly: >Blue 14) but it didn’t stop him as he finally was ready for his assault. “Hokay! It’s time we take you down!”

Time now is Day 6, 12:15 PM

(OOC)

Bottom of the 5th round: Hoots, Kovid, and Lyra are paralyzed, Brendon is paralyzed and asleep. Your guys turn, Crawler is hurt – only hit once so far by Lyra. Good luck!!

PBEM - Episode 209. Jailer, Hoots, CC, and Goo.

TWO HUNDRED NINE

(I/C)

(WMC: Red/Black 3 – none!)

"The lizard. Focus on the lizard-man!" Kovid called out, muscles straining as he tried to keep the Jailer from thrashing free.

"Let's finish this odorous villain,” Abraxas called, “then we can focus on Hoots. It is a shame, he is a beautiful beast, but he is also a savage creature. Let's do what we must amigos."

And then Han shot…and then WYN shot the Jailer first. “I’ve been lookin’ forward to dis for a long time,” he grumbled (>+5 to hit, Orange 20 –Critical, Max Damage 6 and killed!) as he drilled his arrow into the Trog’s face, less than 9” from Kovid’s arm.

“Cutting it close there, elf?” he asked with a raised brow as he stepped back from the slumping Troglodyte.

“Monsieur Dwarffriend, if I wanted to, I could shave your eyebrows at Huit paces if need be.”

Meanwhile Lannis had been channeling another spell, arcane energy flowing off his wrists as he focused on the screaming Owlbear. "This can’t possibly fail twice, right guys? There is no possible way this can possibly fail twice. Things are going our way! Sure there's a scary tentacle faced monster but the centipede is dead, right?" At that he fired off another pink spray of magic at the Owlbear (<Save vs Spells, Red/Black 12 – failed!) where it sort of slowed down and stopped to think about what it was doing.

“Thor’s nuts, you made it son!” Kovid cheered.

Wyn drew his sword and shield and slid around Lyra who was heading towards the fallen Trog. “Priestess! Get behind me! Those probing tentacles could paralyze you...”

She bent down to claim the Flail, calling back, “I’d keep your distance from Goo you guys. I don’t think it’s going to act anything like a pet.” As she touched it, she could feel the magical energy of the silvered weapon through the palm of her hand. It made a sine wave against her holy symbol as the two forces were at odds, and then it shifted and she felt good holding it as well as good from her Goddess for her taking it. “Oh. Oh my!” she said with a smile, holding the Lolthian Flail aloft, the flanged head dangling off the chain. (Add: Lolthian Flail, Silvered +1 Magic [50] to Magical Items in your inventory. Flail for you is: @ +1 (1d6+1+1-1 Damage). Flails ignore shields if someone is holding one.)

The hall was crowded though with the Carrion Crawler, the Owlbear, Abraxas, Wyn, and Brendon on the other end of the melee so Kovid and Lyra couldn’t close to Goo to attack. “Don’t hit the Owlbear!” Lannis advised. “Please!”

“Si Senor!” Abraxas replied, Scythe whipping around as he assaulted the carapaced Crawler (<+6 to hit -2 nausea, Blue 3) but the crazed monster was too fast and dodged the constant slashed and loping arcs from the silver weapon. “Stand still, Pendejo!”

“Goo! Goo!” Brendon sighed, “Why do this?!” the Crawler’s tentacles were flailing all over as it tried to hit anyone around it, the Scout included. “I would have been a good parent. Oh well!” He slashed with his blade (<+1 to hit -2 nausea, Red 11) but it bounced off its tough exterior and failed to penetrate.

(1-3 attack north, 4-6 attack south: White 3 – Attack north) The Crawler doubled back on itself and its pink tentacles flailed wildly, slapping like fleshy whips against Brendon and the Owlbear! “I said DON’T hit the Owlbear!” Lannis cried out.

(Attacks on Brendon: @ +3, <9, <3, <10, >16) The Scout tried to duck and dodge, his gold ring adding some speed to his limbs as the Crawler slammed and slapped about him, and although he either dodged them or they struck his armor and were ineffective, enough did hit him that he felt the sting of their touch and then (<Save vs Petrif/Poly, Red 7) with a painful wrenching, his limbs froze in place, paralyzing the Scout!

(Attacks on Hoots: +3, +4(paused) >9, <2, <5, >18) In addition, Goo’s tentacles had the same effect on the Owlbear, hitting him and releasing him from his Pause with an ear splitting “ROOOOHAAAA!” but the mighty Ursine slowed down (<Save vs Petrif/Poly, Steel 2 and <Steel 11) and he too was Paralyzed in mid scream. (Paralyze time: 2d4 Turns: 2+3 – 5 turns or 50 minutes).

“Great!” Lannis whooped. “Exactly what I wanted to have happen!” Goo then turned to the south to face off against Abraxas and Wyn, tentacles raised and spittle flying from its churning maw. “That on the other hand wasn’t in my notes.”

(Initiative: Party Steel 3 vs Monster Black/Red 3 – tie, reroll. Party Steel 6 vs Monster Black/Red 6 – tie, reroll. Party Steel 3 vs Monster Red/Black 2 – Party wins! Start of Round 4)

Time now is Day 6, 12:14 PM

(OOC)

O/B and Brendon Paralyzed right now. You guys have Initiative. Only Abr and Wyn can melee it right now. Lyra, Kovid, and Lannis are right behind. If you want to hit Hoots, it’s an automatic hit at full damage – NOT a coup de gras – cannot CDG a paralyzed creature. Just an FYI. Good luck!
