This was the 4th character background, and one of the longer players at my table - Wyn D'Endee. As for the "voice" of his swamp elf, think of a mix of Leatherface, Gambit, the Cajun Chef, and the coach from Waterboy to help you get the cadence down pat.
Follows:
Many miles from Specularum and a number of hours after Kovid had told the party about the origin of his surname, the group was trekking their way along the eastern edge of a fen; the sight of skunk cabbages, along with their smell, permeated the air.
“So, Wyn?” Lannis asked. “Does this swamp remind you of home, eh Dundee?”
Lyra gave the Magic User a shot in the ribs and hissed, “Knock it off. Damn, do you have to insult everyone?”
“I’m the smartest person you’re ever going to meet,” he replied, rubbing his side and straightening his flopping hat. “It’s not my fault you can’t keep up on what I say and feel put upon about it.”
“It’s alright, Lady of Aine,” Wyn replied, holding his hands up. “As for you, it’s D'Endee. T’is the name of my entire tribe o’ swamp elves.”
Lannis laughed. “Swamp elves.”
Wyn ignored him, continuing. “Most swamp elves we be nomadic, movin’ around bog terit’ry, harvestin’ from nature and helping to maintain the natural order of t’ings. We swamp elves, we be big on order an’ rules, ya know. Rules that we live by. It explains how they interact with each other.”
“Rules are good, Elfling,” Kovid said, hand on his hammer hilt as he strode along. “Keeps everything in order.”
“Oui. Some though, they t’ink of the D'Endee rules more as guidelines... but nah, they be rules. Otherwise it all gits confusin’ and people get angry. Better to follow the order of things. Sometimes members of the D'Endee tribe split off to form new tribe.”
“Like when it gets too big?” Brendon asked.
“Nah. Size o’ tribe don’t matter to no swamp elves. Some, they want more in life and t’ink splitting and adding more class to life and giving new names to their skillz is important. That is too complicated for Wyn.”
Lyra frowned. “Are you still talking about swamp elves? Sounds like you might be drifting a bit off topic.”
Wyn nodded. “Aye! Tryin’ ta git you ta’ unnerstand the way of my life and stuff. I is from stem of original tribe. Other D'Endee tribe live by different, more complicated rules. Too many rules lead to confusing times. People get angry. No one gets angry in Wyn's tribe.”
“You’re talking about yourself in the third person,” Lannis interjected.
“Wyn is a third person?” Abraxas asked. “I didn’t even know he was a second person.”
“He’s an elf,” Lannis offered. “Not a person – second or third.”
“Now you’re just being racist.”
Meanwhile, the elf was continuing his story as if no one was interrupting him, his strides long and his eyes looking beyond the road ahead of the group. “Everyone lives to have a good time. They follow the rules. No one gets angry. Wyn sometimes dreams of other families and other tribes, as if he was part of them in past lives. They make good stories.”
“Rules are REAAALLL important for you, I get it.” Lannis sighed, “What if things get hairy and you need to defend yourselves? Elves are typically pretty rich. Are swamp elves like that or are they as poor as the name sounds?”
“We swamp elves, we have no need for money…”
“Poor,” Lannis muttered, getting another piercing look from Lyra.
Wyn continued, “Except when it may be nec’sary to protect family and home. The swamp provides and the swamp abides. If we need something, we gets it. If we want something the swamp does not have, trade is an option. Sometimes need to get treasure to trade for bigger things.” He bent down a plucked a long length of field grass, plaiting the end of it as he walked. “Sometimes family must all go and quest for treasure at same time. It is for safety of family to find treasure and resources to help rest of family. But must stay away for in-dee-ter-min-ant time amount. I hopes to be back with family soon... though I is enjoying adventures with you, my current family. You make game of life inneresting.”
Abraxas nodded. “We be brothers in arms, Senor Wind. I am honored to be your brother and hope you would come over next family night for some cervezas.”
“I would love it. Family be important. Unlike other races of elves, we Swamp Elves we live in the present. We lives long, but we know time moves from season to season. It helps us to connect with other races without being too much of a dick. No more dickishness than any other race.”
“Speak for yourself,” Lannis muttered.
“We trade an’ sometimes live among other races. In some cases, we invite other races to live amongst us for a spell and to learn them rules of life. In these ways, I has grown to appreciate certain characteristics of each race.”
“Holy shit,” Lannis leaned next to Lyra, voice pitched low. “Is there an off switch? I’m feeling like he’s talking down to us.”
Wyn continued, (and yes, continued in 3rd person), “Wyn appreciates the human quest for knowledge, aptitude magical gifts, ability to adapt to many situations, your compassion for those you care for, and your music... but loathes the human lust for power at the cost of the natural order.” He beamed at Brendon while saying this, the scout just giving him a neutral blank stare in return.
Turning to Kovid, he pressed on. “Wyn also appreciates the dwarf's ingenuity, craftsmanship, knowledge of the world of stone, and general determination... but does not understand their lust for treasures and all things shiny. Treasure useful for what it can be traded for. No use holding it in hordes for dragon to take. No ‘ffence.”
“Little taken,” Kovid replied.
“Kobolds and goblins? They be destroyers, though. No redeemin’ qual’ties. Only take. No give. Many a tree have been hacked. Many a bog have been drained. Many a stream have been poisoned. Many a forest have been burned. No redeeming qualities. You cannot invite them into your family. There would be nothing left.”
“Well, that’s great.” Lannis looked to the west and turned to address Abraxas, “Sun’s getting pretty low, big guy. What say…”
Wyn continued his tale, voice carrying strong and undeterred as he spoke over the magic user’s attempt at silencing him. “Wyn know much, yes. But Wyn not be Chief yet. Chief of family changes from time to time. Each new elf chief takes Master's Mantle, and gives it a go at overseein’ them rules of the tribe in family group. Sometimes they give it one shot. Sometimes the Master's Mantle is worn for years. Sometimes members of family go to live with other families and try new variations and brews. Wyn tries new variations sometimes. Not as good as what he knows. Some brews do not agree with him.”
Lannis stuck his finger in his mouth and mimed vomiting, most of the party ignored him except for Brendon who was giving the magic user a blank neutral stare.
The elf still continued on. “Wyn gets to live his life how he wants to when not with family. It gets complicated sometimes, not having the rules to follow... but Wyn can deal with it. He learn from humans how to adapt to new things. He learn determination from the dwarves. Even when away from the family, he know there are other rules to live by. He not make it too complicated for himself. Survive and be happy. Those are good rules to live by!”
His voice trailed off and the group continued to plod along, digesting the elf’s story and in some cases, worried about him saying anything else. After almost 2 minutes of silence, Lannis drew breath to ask Abraxas about setting up for camp again when Wyn once more started talking. “Oh, fuck me…” Lannis cursed.
“Family stories can be com-plee-kate-ted at times. While family enjoys rules of life and living in the moment, most stories that come up explain dreams of past lives and adventures that were had in other times. One of my favorite was an elf from a great wood. He good at killing dragons. Great with shooting bow.”
Sticking the grass between his teeth, Wyn let it bob as he continued his tale and walk. “Great elf, he was not always great at shooting a bow. Could hit crossbow out of hands of enemies. Some boasted he could even hit wings off of a fly... never proven, though, yah? While he was good with a bow, past life elf did not know how rules of life were played at first. Had to learn as he went. Like how torches make good clubs. And dwarves can fight with scimitars. And rakes are not to be trusted. And you should never call yourself "Dragonslayer"... dragons don't like that, yah? Which is really too bad. Past life elf was good at killing dragons. He was undefeated and got a head in life. That is how I remembers it, anyway.”
“Wow,” Lyra said as Wyn took a moment to breathe deeply. “Hell of a story. So much history. Just how big is your tribe?”
Tilting his head back, eyes closed, Wyn made an effort to think before answering, “Swamp elves is not about big clan. Enough elves live there in family home. Not too many. Maybe 7. Sometimes they are not all there, but they can still call it a D'Endee family home.” He shrugged. “Sometimes the home members have other things to do. Then they do not come to D'Endee family home. When is less than 4 in the home, the remaining members play games they would not normally play. It is fun, for a time. Sometimes people get angry. Sometimes there are too many rules. It is ok, though. Wyn knows it only temporary.”
He sighed. “Now family & tribe must be distant. Things not like always. They must stay apart to keep each other safe. Is complicated, but Wyn understands. It is the natural order of things.”
“More rules,” Kovid said.
Wyn nodded. “Aye. Now we all look for treasures hidden elsewhere... or hope to find magics that would help the tribe in other ways. If no find the magics... at least it will be a good story to tell later. All family members will eventually return. They will play game of life together again soon. Stories will be told. It will be good again soon.”
He turned to the party and struck a pose, hands on his hips, wind carrying his hair, cloak billowing, sun behind the crown of his head, bathing him in light. “Then Wyn will live up to his name, yah? I WILL Wyn D’Endee. I guar-ran-tee.”
Looking back to the west, Lannis could see the party had passed the edges of the fen almost 2 miles back and were once again walking in grasslands heading east. “Got it. Remind me Wyn to never ask you about swamps again?”
“I’ll try, Monsieur Lannis. But in that case, I cannot guar-ran-tee.”

PBEM, Episode 23 - Stairs, Calcite
TWENTY THREE
(I/C)
"We should save this for later,” Lannis said, motioning the dwarf and scout back up the stairs. “Plenty more on this floor to find and kill first, we should continue down the way we've been going.”
“Next door?” Abraxas asked.
Lannis nodded. He looked at the door downstairs and across the hall to the other door. “We should tie these doors together. Should slow down the hobgoblins or anyone else coming up those stairs. Anyone have rope?”
Wyn reached around his shoulder and pulled the coil up. “Oui! I have.”
“Let me know if you require help with any knots, but do be quick about it,” Lannis said.
Tying one end to the nearest door’s knob with two loops and a pair of knots, the elf crossed the hall, trailing the rope behind him. “We elves ‘ave so many knots for so many tings. Dis be a door knot. But dere also barbecue knot, boil knot, broil knot, bake knot, saute knot. Dere's also, knot-kabobs, knot creole, knot gumbo. Pan fried knot, deep fried knot, stir-fried knot... hm, ok. Door knots done. More explore time, oui?"
“Knots?” Lyra asked. “Those all sound like cooking methods... you sure you’re not mixing the two up? As far as the direction, I’m a bit torn. Perhaps the hobgoblins we killed left some useful gear behind in there for us to use? Potions or weapons?”
“Perhaps,” Brendon said. “But I’m not comfortable checking downstairs yet until we clear this area first.”
“I agree,” Kovid said, wiggling his shoulder. “Let’s stay here first, make sure the hall is clear, see what’s at the end, and then make another decision.”
“Senor Klover, What is wrong with your shoulder?”
The dwarf shrugged. “Still a bit sore after the goblin fight. Going to need to sleep it off tonight.”
Clapping him on the back, Abraxas puffed out his chest. “I will open the door for you, Master Dwarf.”
The group fell in behind Brendon, lantern lit, and proceeded further down the hall, looking carefully around. As they approached the 4th door on the left, their lantern showed the hall continued on and still kept going. Giving the door a slow and methodical once over, Brendon was (>Find traps, Red 45) sure the door was not trapped and there was (>Hear Noise, Red 98) no noise to be heard. “It’s not trapped either.”
Abraxas, setting himself up in front of the door looked down (<Wis check, Blue 4) and whispered. “What is that?”
“What?”
He pointed at the floor. There was some sort of crystally looking stone along the base of the door. “That.”
Kovid glanced down. “Calcite.”
“God bless you.”
“No, Manling. Calcite. Mineral growth.”
“Oh.” Abraxas stared at it. “Is it dangerous? Why here?”
Kovid pursed his lips. “Hmmm. Naturally growing mineral, takes months and even years to grow like it’s doing. Going to say this door hasn’t been open in a while.” He glanced at the frame. “Might have to put some effort into opening it.”
Abraxas nodded. He backed up a step and started to raise his leg when Brendon grabbed his arm. “What the hell are you doing?”
“Opening the door, Senor Lake.”
“Try the handle?”
“But Senor Dwarfbeard said it might be stuck.”
“So? I get it, it’s exciting And you’re a big fella but you can’t be kickin' in doors and yelling”.
“Who said I was going to yell?”
Lannis shrugged. “I will admit, Big Guy, it did look like you were going to Shockmaster the door.”
Abraxas sighed. “Si.” He grabbed the handle and turned it, a crackling sound came forth. “I push hard with shoulder, not with me shoes.” He then (<Open Door +2 bonus, Blue 3) shouldered the door HARD, and it opened with enough force to crack the calcite along its base and hinges.
The lantern light filled the room of what was once a sizable DINING ROOM. There was a massive FIREPLACE along the closest wall to the EAST, and a pair of dark IRON CANDLE HOLDERS flanked the doors. The room was so big, that it was larger than the light the lantern gave, leaving the far end of the room undefined and in gloom. There seemed to be massive PILLARS running from floor to ceiling. There was a huge DINING TABLE taking up the center of the room that seemed to have PEOPLE sitting around it!
However, even in the lantern light and from this distance it was obvious the people were statues. Pale grey and white, at least 7 that we could see but sure to be more, sitting in chairs around the table. There were in various finery, had an elven look about them, and the ones you could see were looking in the direction of the door with different excited or horrified expressions on their faces.
Whatever food was once on the table was long gone, leaving only vague black smears on plates and bowls and mugs situated there.

Ok, room is so big I cannot map it out entirely unless you enter to shine the lantern further inside. What’s the plan?

PBEM, Episode 22 - Stairs, Calcite
TWENTY TWO
(I/C)
Brendon knelt by one of the dead hobgoblins and whispered “thank you” you it again while cleaning his boots on its shirt. Lannis, doing similar and going around the room to smear other prints said, “Well, that was fun, but we should be going. Perhaps we should take one of the Hobs with us as a meat shield, I'm sure Robert is well suited to the task.”
“Senor Offpth,” Abraxas started, trying to shove the chainmail armor he had taken from the dead hobgoblin leader into his backpack, “the hobgoblins are all dead…”
“Good!” Both Kovid and Wyn exclaimed, eyeing one another and then smirking.
The Fighter continued, “So they will not be shielding our meat nor would they be inclined to, but being as it may, which one was Robert?”
“All of them are Robert.”
“Really?”
“Aye. Like all goblins are Bob.”
Lyra sighed. “I don’t like hobgoblins or goblins any of more than the rest of you.. but using them as a meat shield? Isn’t that a bit barbaric? As well as that ear cutting. What use will those be?”
Abraxas, giving up on packing the chainmail away shook his head. “That is a stupid way to name each other.” He kicked one of the hobgoblins in the ribs. “You are so stupid. Dead and stupid, Robert!” He looked at the door, “Senor Lake, come with me double quick. We go to the ballista room and drop off this armor to take when we leave on our way out. Too heavy to carry for now.”
Brendon shrugged. “Quick and quiet. And then I want to go to the door the hobgoblins…”
“Robert and the 4 Roberts, Senor,” Abraxas interrupted.
“Yeah, them. Where they came from…”
“Do we know exactly which door?” Lyra asked.
The other 5 party members all pointed to the door and then east again, causing the Cleric to mumble to herself and continue to smear footprints. Brendon continued, “If there are any more, we have the momentum and the surprise on our side.”
Kovid had drawn out his larger tarp and was using it to obscure large swaths of our footprints, spitting on each goblin as he passed them by. “Sounds good, hurry back. Let’s see what other wonders this castle holds.”
Abraxas nodded his head, shield and sword at the ready, chainmail armor under his arm, Brendon had taken the torch we had lit earlier and held that aloft, his own short sword out and ready. “Aye, Senor Cofax. Let us see.” They opened the door, looked out, and then entered the hall turning south, Abraxas whispering in a singsong manner, “Look at this trove…treasures untold…how many pesos can una caverna hold…” before Brendon tapped him on the shoulder and shook his head. “Lo Siento.”
Wyn stayed by the door, opened a crack and listening, while he separated the elf and goblin ears – not wanting to mix them together. The rest of the party made short work of the room. Lyra who was down to 6 good sized slinging stones kept a keen eye out, finding 4 more stones that would be perfect for her to use, refilling her pouch back to 10 (Add 4 stones).
Luck was with Abraxas and Brendon (WMC: Red/Black 5). The two of them were generally faster members of the party and since they were not looking for traps or secret doors or trying to do anything other than in haste, they made short time down the hall, to the west, and back to the main room we entered. From there they opened the Ballista room with the dead rats in it, stuffed the chainmail armor behind the war machine. From there they shut the door and returned to the party with all haste.
Meanwhile the group felt they had (+10 General Check, Red/Black 6) done a decent job of hiding their footprints in the room and Kovid refolded his tarp stowing it away as the other two returned lighter 40 lbs of chainmail armor. “Done.” Brendon said. He pointed to the door on the east wall across the hall. “Let’s go.”
The group filtered out and took up positions again, Abraxas extinguishing the torch once more to be used again later (it was about half of its useful life remaining), as we approached the door once more. Brendon gave it a final look over (no roll needed) and declared it ok. Swapping with the dwarf, Kovid grabbed the handle and pushed the door in in a single fluid hard motion.
Revealing a set of stairs going DOWN.
Huh.
According to the lantern light, the steps went down a full flight and ended a door maybe 20’ away. Since this was the direction we had chosen, Brendon and Kovid went down the steps looking carefully for any problems and the thief checked out the door at the bottom (Hear Noise, Red 06) while Kovid was pursing his lips, head tilted, a bit more than half way down the steps (Stonework, Yellow 1).
“Door isn’t locked, no traps, its closed with a turn handle and opens away from me and to the right,” Brendon said. “I don’t hear any movement anywhere nearby, nor any voices. But I can feel a very faint movement of air under the door and the faintest of whistling sounds from a breeze somewhere far from but beyond this door.
Kovid grunted. “I agree with the Manling on this. It’s not quite still but I can scent unworked stone somewhere within 100’ to 200’ of here carried on that faint breeze.”
Time now is 12:27
(OOC)
What to do? Open the door – nothing more I can hint about it. Hobgoblins DID come from this way. Or go back up the stairs and further down the hall to the door on the left or into the uncharted area?

PBEM, Episode 21 - Gob and Hob Kitchen
TWENTY-ONE
(I/C)
Brendon turned one of the Hobgoblins over, binding its arms and legs together tightly while it was sleeping and Abraxas killed the last sleeping one. Wyn had them place the slumbering hobgoblin in the dark corner near the door with other dead one s around it as Kovid righted the table and then proceeded to check out the walls for any secret doors. Lannis and Lyra proceeded to start in the back of the room and further search the already ransacked drawers, cabinets, and pantries.
With a nod to Abraxas, he jammed the tip of his sword into the sleeping hobgoblin and twisted it, waking the humanoid up with a curse in its own language. Wyn, pitching his voice higher in the register and talking goblin, began blubbering to the bound hobgoblin, “Ah! They’ze crazy! They going torture us more if’n we don’t tells them wot we doing. My fingers gonna be torn off next! You gots to help us.”
While all this was going on, the hobgoblin couldn’t help but notice the very large Abraxas and the very dangerous looking Brendon, both still splattered with goblinoid blood and looking pretty pissed off, were going through the lone hobgoblin’s companions bodies, ripping open pouches, tugging off the leader’s chainmail, and on Brendon’s command, slicing off the hobgoblin’s ears all while making eye contact.
“Me just stupid dumb fucker, ya?” Wyn continued, really selling the ruse (=Cha check +2 bonus, Orange 13) to the now nervous hobgoblin. “So I tells them, you, much bigger and smarter than me be the better one to talk, ya? Wot say you?”
At this point Abraxas lifted one of the hobgoblin’s up by its feet, glanced at the hobgoblin, and drove his spear through the dead body’s soft midsection and pinned it to the wall. He proceeded to pull the silver and copper trinkets from its pockets and was humming, “Manana, manana…you won’t see…manana…”
The Hobgoblin swallowed deeply. “By Corfard’s steaming shit, shut the fuck up you little green son of a bitch. You want to get us all killed? One job, one fucking job, find elf shit and bring it to us. And instead you alert a group of murdering bastards and have us walk into a fucking ambush? If you were twice as fucking smart as you think you are, you’d still be a fucking moron. It doesn’t matter what you say, they’re going to kill us all you dick.”
“So sorry,” Wyn continued. “What is the plan though? What is the we be not telling to them? I don’t know what I am not supposed to know, you know? What am I supposed to know that I don’t know?!”
The hobgoblin seeing his friend stuck to the wall upside down, dead, and Brendon slowly cutting its ears off, confused by Wyn’s words (Combative Cha Check: Wyn Orange 6, Hobgoblin Red/Black 5) slipped up and said, “You don’t know what’s going on, because it’s not your place to know! Corfard’s been working on the rainbow ward collapsing for years in hopes of getting to the Dirty Elf Chief’s Treasure Vault! But the fucking tricksy elves are so deceitful they bound the keys and hid them in the fucking castle and we’re trying to fucking find it!”
“What does Corfard want in the vault, oh mighty hob of hobgoblin?”
“How the fuck do I know? Some Elf Weapons? Some Elf Spellbooks? I don’t know and fucked if you tell them anything except your name and nothing else! Got it?”
Wyn, catching Brendon’s eyes and nodding, replied. “Got it! Will do!” and then the scout drew his short sword in a single fluid motion and slashed the hobgoblin across the throat, watching its eyes as it gurgled its life blood out – the their leaning in to the greenskin’s face and saying,” Thanks for the information.” In goblin.
Wiping his hands clean, Wyn then went off and collected the ears from the goblins, knowing that the bounty in Specularm was 2 Coppers per ear. Taking a length of torn shirt from the goblins, he braided the cloth quickly and strung the 10 goblin and 12 hobgoblin ears on (Add Goblin necklace (22). “Excellent, mon ami. Collecting ears from ze vermin is going to make it worth to us later.”
As for the rest of the room, Lannis and Lyra discovered nothing of interest, and Kovid was sure that there were no secret doors. The Chainmail armor was useable but the only person that would get a benefit from it would be Wyn – however the hobgoblins were at least a foot and a half taller than the elf and outweighed him by over 150 lbs – so too big. As of treasure, the group did find 48 copper and 30 silver amidst the humanoids belongings. We split it up coins: 5 silver and 8 copper each.
As there was nothing else to look for in the room, we relit the lantern off the goblin’s failing torch and discussed out options on where to go: to the RIGHT door the Hobgoblin’s came down, or continue NORTH to the next LEFT door (where we heard nothing behind) or continue NORTH past that to the area we had not explored yet?

PBEM, Episode 20 - Gob and Hob Kitchen
TWENTY
(I/C)
Getting a quick heads up as to what’s coming, the decision was quickly put in place to smother the room in light, hide the goblin bodies in the corner, fix the table and chairs for cover, and set up to ambush the Hobgoblins before they come in. Lannis, supervising the group quickly dragging bodies to the far corner of the kitchen, was adamant to advise the party, “However it works out, these are hobgoblins. Don't rush into the breach too quickly, if there are a multitude of them allow me to handle it first."
Abraxas handed Kovid his spear and gave the dwarf a push to the tables and now mounded chairs. “Stay back there, Senor Moped. Throw and save your health for now.”
Meanwhile Brendon and the Fighter took up position near the back side of the door, the scout whispering to Abraxas, “Doc. Silent, ok?” while drawing his short sword and crouching low.
“Si!”
We got ready, Lannis, Wyn, and Lyra all down near the table, Kovid hunched a little lower by the mounded chairs, Wyn doused the lantern light; and we could hear the door in the hall open and Hobgoblin voices get louder. “Oi! Ye short and stunty fuckers!” a hobgoblin yelled out in its language. “What the fucker is going on!?”
Wyn yelled back in goblin, voice registering up an octave, “Oi! ‘Ello to ze ‘Obs! ‘Ow do you like…”
Something slammed into the door. “Shut up, stunty fucker! You have one job, look for stuff to give to us that is worth keeping! Did you do it? Or do you need another beating?! Don’t need you fuckers shouting your damned heads off.”
Brendon cleared his throat and replied, “So sorry! So sorry!” mimicking the higher pitched voice of goblins like Wyn, also talking their language. “We are such shits!”
“Yes!” Wyn agreed. “We are!”
From the hall the group could hear the hobgoblins chuckle and the rasping sound of weapons being sheathed. (=Cha Check, Red 13. <Cha Check, Orange 5) “Fucking stunties. If they weren’t so fucking dumb, there’d be no use for them what so ever. Let’s go see what the dumb fuckers are up to.”
And then the door opened and the group could see 4..5..6 hobgoblins, clad in leather armor, the first one and tallest of them in chainmail. They were just over 6’ in height, green of skin, and sporting garish orange hair that stuck out wildly like a clown. Lannis, focused on them as they walked in without a care in the world (<Surprise Check, Red/Black 2) not noticing the group hidden or the two near the door.
And then the magic user finished his spell and blue energy flew from his fingertips and (4d4 HD check: 9) the Leader Hobogoblin and 3 of his companions fell over unconscious.
The other two stood agog briefly as Brendon stepped out of the shadows and stabbed the nearest one in the back (>+1 to hit, +4 bonus, Red 20, Critical Max Damage) puncturing its heart, and then twisting the blade as the hobgoblin died before it even knew what happened (1d6, Max Damage 6, Backstab x2: 12 Damage and killed!!).
At that signal, Abraxas shoved his body into the door, slamming it closed as Kovid stood from behind the chairs, war hammer cocked over his shoulder, and let fly (>-1 to hit, Yellow 20, Critical Max Damage), smashing into the lone hobgoblin’s face and staggering him back (1d8 Damage, Max Damage 8). And as he tried to grab his weapon, blinking through the pain of his broken jaw and spitting teeth, Lyra sling spun over head and a stone (>+3 to hit, White 16) whizzed out catching the hobgoblin in the forehead with the sound of a cracking brick (1d3 Damage, White 4: 2 Damage and killed!) and it fell over dead.
Entire surprise round of combat took 9 seconds.
Abraxas and Wyn drew swords and each stabbed two of the sleeping hobgoblins in the back of the head, killing them – leaving 2 others to be slain.

The room was a KITCHEN of some sort, counters and shelves on both sides of the room had their CUPBOARDS and DRAWERS open and bowls, plates, cups, serving utensils, and forks and spoon were all over the floor as the place was in the process of being ransacked. There was a large TABLE and 4 CHAIRS at the far end of the room dumped over where some CLAYWARE POTS were broken on the floor near it.

PBEM, Episode 19 - Gob and Hob Kitchen
NINETEEN
(I/C)
Kovid whirled his war hammer overhead as the goblin was screaming in Abraxas’ face, and swung it broadsides with all his might (>+2 to hit, Yellow 14) crushing the goblin’s chest and folding it almost in half as it flew across the chamber broken and dead (1d8+1 Damage, Yellow 7: 8 Damage and killed!). “Manling,” he yelled to Abraxas, “the others have the one on the chair, get the one behind the table if you can!”
As he was calling out, Lyra had already stepped to the side and let fly another sling stone (>+3 to hit, White 15), cracking the goblin in the chin, splitting the lower part its face open (1d3 Damage, White 5: 3 Damage) and causing it to stagger back.
And then Wyn’s arrow struck the goblin (=+5 to hit, Orange 8) in the chest (1d6 Damage, Orange 3 Damage and killed!) and it finished its fall with a crash to the floor.
While all this was going on, Abraxas was still singing, his song transmuting from the dwarven red rain chant to, “Red Rain from Green Skin, bastards' blood wipes sin.” He gathered his feet beneath him, gave the table across the refuse strewn room a hard look, and then tossed his sword to Kovid and locked his shield in front of him and started to MOVE. “Bludgeon Flesh, break bone. Make Devils atone.” He gathered speed, stomping heavily as the goblin behind the table frantically tried to get a stone in time to sling. “Never stop, strike true, goblins gore in view.” He struck the table HARD, smashing it aside (<Str check, -4 penalty, Blue 11) and into the greenskin (Dam 3) and then laid into the goblin, “No one is safe, not sons or daughters, until every goblin lies slaughtered!” (>+5 to hit -2 penalty, Blue 19. 1d2+2 Damage, Blue 3: 3 Damage and killed!) bludgeoning it to death with his pistoning fists.
While Wyn, Brendon, and Lannis were ready to come into the room, grabbing the lantern (WMC: Red/Black 1) they could hear some yelling in goblin coming from the door on the right, sounding like it was from a distance away – slamming doors, armored and booted figured angrily coming, and according to Wyn (>Int check +2 bonus elf, Orange 13) they were deeper than normal goblin voices, most likely hobgoblin, and said, “If those little ankle biters are screaming like fucking moron for no reason, I swear to Iuz that Corfard will have them fertilizing the garden by nightfall! Lets go.” Followed by the sounds of weapons unsheathing.
The three of them spilled into the room, lantern with them, and shut the door to the KITCHEN, filling the rest of the group that something…most likely HOBGOBLINS…were coming. And they were expecting to find just the goblins in here.

EIGHTEEN
(I/C)
"Señor Kospid,” Abraxis roared, seeing Kovid stagger from the goblin’s assault, “let's push these goblins back, and put them down. Let my shield do the lifting heavy, mi amigo. Everyone else, take aim!"
Lannis meanwhile had been twisting his hands wildly about, lights flashing from his forearms and down to his fingers while tapping his foot in rhythm. As Abraxis raised his sword and Kovid was battling about with his hammer, the Magic User pointed to the middle goblin and sang, “Stop, hey, what's the sound? Everybody look what's going down!”
A blast of yellow and pink light flew out, struck the goblin in the face, (<Save vs Spells, Steel 12) and the greenskin stood there, hands upraised, crude spear unmoving as it seemed to pause, thinking deeply. “Let’s get out of this hallway! Push them in!”
Meanwhile Lyra had her sling wrapped around her wrist as she gripped her holy symbol and tried to place her hand on the dwarf’s shoulder. “Goddess Aine, please ble—god damn it Kovid stay still!” She cursed, gripping his shoulder pauldron long enough to finish her prayer. “Aine, please bless my companion with your healing touch.” Soothing waves flowed into the dwarf (Heal 1d6+1, Red/Black 1 – Kovid Heal 2 Damage – Nice job Kelly’s Dice!) and he seemed to draw strength.
Hitting the goblin in the face and waving his warhammer wildly, Kovid called to Abraxis, “Just let the red rain splash you Abraxas!" Before the two of them could push into the kitchen, Wyn took aim with his bow and let fly a clothyard shaft into the Goblin on the left (>+5 to hit, Orange 9, 1d6 Damage, Orange 2) where it pierced him high in the chest but failed to drop the greenskin.
Kovid and Abraxis shoved hard against the 3 goblins who were trying to keep the battle at the doorway. Kovid stomped and growled, a dwarven chant filling the air as he panted and cursed and shoved. "Red rain coming down. Red rain. Red rain is pouring down. I'm bathing in red rain coming down…”
Abraxis joined the dwarf in his chanting, the two of them shoving the smaller foes back as they sang, “Red rain is falling down. Red rain is coming down all over me.” (Party Str: Yellow 6 +1 +1, Blue 4 +1 +2 = 15. Goblins’ Str: White 1, White 4 – 4 penalty (paused), White/Blue 6 -1 penalty (wounded) = 6) and they managed to shove the goblins back enough for Abraxis and Kovid to stand side by side and Lyra to slide into the room behind them.
And it was here that Kovid took his aggression out on the goblins. “Red rain!” his war hammer smashed the goblin in the face. “Red rain!” his weapon battered the kobold back. “Coming down!” and with a final swing at the battered goblin he arced his weapon over his head and crashed it down two handed on the greenskin (>+2 to hit, Yellow 15, Damage: 1d8+1, Yellow 5: 6 Damage and killed!) staving its head in and splashing the dwarf and fighter with its brains and blood. “Ha!” Kovid snarled.
“I am liking the rain,” Abraxis cheered on in good spirits, wiping the goblin brain juice absently from his face with the back of his arm, sword stabbing in and out at the goblin that was taking too long to make a decision especially to defend itself thanks to Lannis’ spell. It staggered from the cuts (>+5 to hit +4 bonus, Blue 13, Damage: 1d8+2, Blue 5: 7 Damage and killed!) and then fell over gurgling as its lungs deflated and blood poured down its chest.
Brendon had held his action until the room was clear enough to get a bead on the goblin in the back standing on the chair and once he was able to, took aim and shot sighing softly. However, just as he fired, Abraxis stepped to the side to hit the next goblin and ended up right in front of the arrow! (<+4 to hit, Red 1 fumble, Green 2 – hit friend 1 hp – Abraxis take 1 hp damage) The fighter’s helm rang from the arrow that struck it, making a small dent and causing the fighter to curse at the goblin he was fighting. “How DARE you try to stab me in the back, Senor Grublin!” and he stabbed the dying greenskin in the face for good measure.
(Initiative: Party Steel: 5, Goblins Red/Black: 6 – Goblins win – thanks Kelly!!)
The goblin what had been shot by Wyn, seeing its two companions get cut down turned its anger on Abraxis who was still taking his sword out of the greenskin’s face, hitting the fighter in the side (>+1 to hit, Red/Black 19, 1d6 Damage, Gray 2 – 2 Damage to Abraxis).
The Goblin on the chair meanwhile noted Brendon’s attention to himself and loaded up a stone in its sling and let it spin twice overhead to fly at the scout (>+2 to hit, Red/Grey 16, 1d3 Damage: Red 2: 1 Damage to Brendon).
And the last Goblin behind the table took aim at the dwarf and let its own sling stone go flying (<+2 to hit, Red/Green 10) but the dwarf batted it out of the air by deflecting it with the head of his warhammer.
Time now is: 12:00
(OOC)
3 Goblins left – one fighting Abraxis wounded by Wyn in melee, one on chair slinging back rank people, one behind table slinging front rank people. Kovid and Abraxis at front line, Lyra right behind. Other three in hall at door. No roll needed but those in the hall know the sound of the fighting is echoing down the halls and there will be a WMC at end of the battle. Floor of kitchen is difficult terrain due to the goblins dumping stuff all over the place ransacking to look for anything – so movement in the room is -10’ for everyone.
Bottom of round two.

Before the two of them could push into the kitchen, Wyn took aim with his bow and let fly a clothyard shaft into the Goblin on the left (>+5 to hit, Orange 9, 1d6 Damage, Orange 2) where it pierced him high in the chest but failed to drop the greenskin.

PBEM, Episode 17 - Gob and Hob Kitchen
Throughout the PBEM game you will see notes of "Thanks Kelly" here and again. One of my friends purchased me a set of Eldritch Dice, Lovecraft specific. I have other dice I use when I DM, but for this game, I wanted to bring them out so they (red/black) are the primary dice of the bad guys. And the dice have been rolling great - so I thank her often during the Posts and she comments all the time that I should NOT be using the dice she bought me. :)

SEVENTEEN
(I/C)
Seeing Kovid’s temper flaring, Wyn laid his hand on the dwarf’s arm and leaned in, “Monsieur Dwarf. I am all for ze killing of filth…”
“Damn straight,” Kovid snarled.
“Oui, oui. But I suggest that instead of just bustin’ down ze door, we listen first. If’n we outnumber them, we kills them good. Otherwise we come up wit anudder plan.”
“This entire place sucks,” muttered Lyra. “Goblins, rats, kobolds? How many other shitty vermin are infesting this place.”
Looking around, Kovid sighed. “As long at the end of it, we make green paste.”
The party all resettled their weapons and gear, Lannis giving the grain and beer a last look. “I suppose this room isn't going anywhere, I acquiesce that we should deal with the more immediate threat first.” As they were readying to leave, he stuck his hand in one of the grain sacks and scooped a couple handfuls into his own bag. Lyra who saw this raised her eyebrow at him. “What?”
“What are you doing, Lannis? She asked.
“Nothing.”
“Really?”
Lannis frowned. “What? Is taking a handful or two of grain suddenly against Aine’s religion? Is there a problem with this?”
She shook her head. “Can you even tell me why?”
He closed the bag and grabbed his staff, ready to go back into the hall. “I could, but my intellect is so dizzying complex and my arcane skills unfathomable that it would take longer than it’s worth to explain.” Giving her a final look, Lannis leaned in and whispered, “Magic,” and then stepped into the hall.
Meanwhile Brendon and Wyn taking point with Kovid right there, inched their way down the hall till they came to the right side door, where another listen (no roll) revealed nothing new either. From there they stopped at the next door on the left where everyone was able to hear the occasional sound of something wooden being tossed on the ground. “Greenskins, huh?” Brendon asked, running his fingers across the door frame (<Find Trap, Red 02) finding no traps or surprises, “I like Gobslayer better than Manslayer. What say we get you to earn that name?”
Giving the rest of the party the thumbs up, the group gathered together around the door, ready to open. Glancing at the door (<Wis +2 bonus, Yellow 7) Kovid was able to see a faint flicker. “Goblins have some sort of light in there. I would guess a torch.”
"Good!” Abraxis hissed. “I was wondering how will we smash the Goblins without Señor Kupid's lantern? I can not see without light. I might hit one of you!"
Wyn was satisfied. “Glad to hear that. Brendon, ‘ow many of zem you think?”
Brendon, aware that their presence was still undiscovered but for not much longer, shrugged. “They haven’t said anything, but the echoes through the door lead me to believe 4 or 5, tops.”
Kovid looked at Wyn and pursed his lips. “That’s good for us.” Abraxis had his shield up, sword at the ready, Brendon and Wyn their bow, Lannis a wickedly long dart, Lyra loaded up a sling stone, and Kovid had a death grip on his war hammer. “Ancestors…Guide our hands.”
And he grabbed the handle, turned it, and pushed hard but not with care not to make too much noise (Surpise Check, Goblins, White 3).
The room was a KITCHEN of some sort, counters and shelves on both sides of the room had their CUPBOARDS and DRAWERS open and bowls, plates, cups, serving utensils, and forks and spoon were all over the floor as the place was in the process of being ransacked. There was a large TABLE and 4 CHAIRS at the far end of the room where some CLAYWARE POTS sat. Stuffed in a sconce near the north end of the room was a torch illuminating the 50’ LONG, 30’ WIDE room. In which were 5 GOBLINS.
Just under 5’ tall, their eyes glowed red in the dim light as they whirled to see the group at the door and in that moment (Initiative Steel Party 4, Red/Black Goblins 6 – thanks for the dice Kelly!!!) they saw Kovid and shouted out, “Dwarf!!!” before charging forward to attack.
Three of the Goblins ran at the group at full speed, crude spears with stone points in their hands as the dwarf readied himself for the impact. They struck at the dwarf with fury and abandon but little skill, (+1 to hit, Red/Black 2, Red/Green 17, Red/Grey 19) striking the dwarf all about his platemail, stabbing again and again. He twisted and parried but found himself quickly unable to defend against all three goblins at once and took a wicked stab in a weak spot near his shoulder (1d6 Damage, Green 6 Damage Kovid) and again a battering around his midsection, (1d6 Damage, Red/Black 6 Damage Kovid – thanks for the dice Kelly!!) – Dropping the dwarf to practically half hit points!
Meanwhile, the furthest goblin slammed his body into the table, upending it so he could have some cover, and swung his own sling overhead, letting a stone fly (+2 to hit, -4 penalty, Steel 12) but it cracked into the door jamb near the dwarf and the last goblin, stood up on a chair to get better aim and tried to send his stone to fly out and hit Abraxas (+2 to hit, -2 penalty, Steel 3) where it never made it out of the room, cracking into the lintel instead.
And now it was the party’s turn.

(OOC)
Bottom of the First Round of Combat, Kovid is in the door facing three goblins, 2 of them further in the room, one with 75% cover and both with slings. Kovid, between you and Abraxas, you both have the strength to clear the door and force the goblins back into the room – but you will lose 10’ off your movement doing so (20’ dwarf, 30’ fighter) assuming you want to run past them. Everyone else has missile weapons out and ready – can change if want. Door to the room is open so noises if the combat continues for a length of time might trigger another WMC.

Kovid stepped aside, allowing Abraxas and Brendon to enter. Looking up at the ceiling for anything hiding up in the gloom, Abraxas said, "In, in we go. Let's see what's inside!” Lannis hissed at the Fighter, fingers over his lips and the other hand pointing at his chest for some reason. Not sure what he was indicating, Abraxas asked, “Should we open the barrels, or pop a hole in them? Maybe Señor Laves can listen to the barrels?"
Turning back to Kovid, Lannis said,"Keep an eye on that door, I don't want anything to surprise us, or us to alert anything out there to our presence.” Holding his staff before him, he went to the stacked barrels, knocking on them lightly and listening.
Kovid stayed in the door, ears pricked and watching carefully up and down the hall, Lyra and Wyn with sling and bow added their efforts as well.
After a few minutes of looking, Brendon (<Wis +2 bonus, Red 7), Abraxas (=Wis +2 bonus, Blue 12) and Lannis (>Wis +2 bonus, Pink 18) had given the room a deep once over. The ceilings had only a few sips of webbing, there were a number of bags and barrels in and the barrels were solid, thumping and jostling filled with some liquid.
There were some driven corks in the top that Brendon were able to pry up (Str > 8, no roll) to see and sample what was inside. Beer. Barrels of beer. Abraxas noted on the side of the barrels were the caskers marking of this year, and the location was Jector. Which is east of here, and is typically known to be a goblin kingdom. “What how you say beer from this year get into castle that elf place and not in for thirty years? Makes nada sense.”
As for the sacks, they had grain. Bags and bags of grain. Moving them about to get a count, Lannis let one slip from the shelf where it landed heavily on the ground. Wyn from outside gave them a once over and whispered, “That iz a lot of grain. Enough for 80 acres easily to plant.”
“Lannis,” Kovid whispered to the Magic User, “Legs man. Use them.”
"Use them to do what?"
“Pick up that bag of grain.”
“Why?”
“You dropped it.”
Lannis gave the dwarf a long stare. “And?”
“Just pick it up.”
Grumbling Lannis went to bent over when Abraxas stopped the mage and shook his head. “Legs, Senor. Use your legs.” He bent down, grabbed the sack, and stood up smoothly. “See?”
“Ah, yeah. I get it!” He patted the empty shelf and stepped back so Abraxas could put the bag there. “I’ll do that next time. When I’m not rearranging the order of the cosmos or weaving the strands of creation to obey my wishes.”
“Great!” Abraxas said. “Glad to know.”
Brendon sucked his teeth for a minute. “How long does grain last?”
“Could be months, even years, mon ami,” Wyn offered.
The thief nodded. “Yeah. But this, like the beer, is new. What’s going on?”
Meanwhile Lyra, Wyn, and Kovid had been listening (>Hear Noise, White 12 - >Hear Noise, Orange 9 - <Hear Noise, Yellow 4) and watching with care down the hall. From the next room to the north, the three of them could faintly hear the occasional sound of something falling and bouncing, wood on stone.
Kovid’s head snapped up, beard bristling. “What the…?” he muttered.
“What?” Lyra asked.
“Goblin.”
“Where?” Wyn looked around.
“In the room making noises. I swear on my ancestor’s beard, I heard a goblin voice.”
“Really?” Wyn asked. “What did they zay?”
“I don’t know their tongue, I have better things to do than speak their filthy language.” He seemed to be growing red beneath his beard. “I’m not sure what the plan is, but truthfully, if there are goblins there, we have an obligation, Manling, to end them and with great prejudice.” (>Cha +3 Level check Racial Hatred, Yellow 14) Kovid gripped his war hammer tighter, knuckles going white.
Meanwhile Lannis, Abraxas, and Brendon with the dwarf’s lantern had found nothing but grain and beer, and on seeing Kovid’s slowly fading grip on his anger, decided to wrap up their time in this room before something happened or wandered down the hall. (WMC, Red/black 4).

PBEM, Episode 15 - B and G Storeroom
FIFTEEN
(I/C)
Brendon wiped the last of the dirt away from his wound, Lyra giving it a once over. “By Aine’s Red Blessings, you’ll live, Brendon It’s just a bruise, didn’t even break the skin.”
“Yeah, I know,” he said wincing, eyeing the wine bottle hanging out of the side of her backpack, “but a little nip wouldn’t hurt.”
Shaking her head, Lyra reached into her back and held the bottle just out of Brendon’s grasp, “ A nip. Not a swig or a glug. You have more work to do before you can get inebriated. But here.” She handed it over, the thief uncorking the top and tilting it back. “And let me know if you start to feel unwell and I will take care of that for you.”
Sighing contentedly, Brendon wiped his mouth and recorked the bottle, giving it back. “Aine indeed. Thanks Lyra.” (Reduce Wine from 2 to 1 ¾)
The rest of us got ready to leave. Abraxas stuffed the Silver Mirror and Hand Drum into his sack, tucking the cinnamon stick into the fold of his shirt for safe keeping (add Silver Mirror (10), Hand Drum (5), and Cinnamon Stick to inventory). Lannis took the other sticks, as well as the 10 incense cones, (Add 4 Cinnamon Sticks, and 10 Incense Cones (10) to Inventory) looking over the cloth with Maestro’s symbology for a bit before handing it back to Lyra (Add Maestro Cloth to Inventory). And finally, Wyn put the 10 mushrooms into his wooden box and then took the leather necklace with the elf ears, “These vermin will pay for diz,” and wrapped the worn pants around it, before putting it into his backpack (Add 10 Edible Mushrooms (10), Old Pants (2) with Leather Necklace 3 Elf Ears (3) to Inventory).
"Okay everybody,” Abraxas asked, hand on the door out of the room, “We good? We should uh... how they say... get a move on? Let's go."
After making sure weapons were drawn, lantern in place, and the group ready, we opened the door, verified the hall was clear, and then Brendon leading the way, turned NORTH and continued on our way. We travelled slow and with care, watching and observant. As we closed on the first door on the LEFT, we could see in the lantern light a door on the RIGHT a half dozen paces onward, and then the next door on the LEFT another half dozen paces beyond that one. Even from this distance, we could faintly hear the occasional sound of something wooden (light?) hitting the floor. It wasn’t consistent, it wasn’t loud, but it was audible and occasional.
“Nothing behind us,” Lannis whispered. “Let’s check out this door first.”
We reshuffled in the hall, Kovid ready to open the door here, Abraxas and Wyn just north of him, sword and bow out, the rest of the party also on high alert. Brendon gave the door a once over (>Find Traps, Red 99) but was sure it was fine, patting the dwarf on the shoulder. Feet braced as if ready to receive a charge, war hammer held over his shoulder, Kovid grabbed the door handle and pushed with a single fluid hard shove, in and to the left.
Revealing a STOREROOM. The chamber was 20’x20’, and the shelves were filled with bulging SACKS. Along the north wall were almost a dozen BARRELS. Kovid and Brendon inched into the chamber looking around (>Find Secret Doors: Yellow 6) (>Wis, Red 16) but saw nothing out of the ordinary besides the sacks and barrels.
As for the party, they were being as quiet as they could while on alert in the hall (<Silent, Red/Grey 5), with both Lannis and Wyn very happy with the party’s efforts so far.
Time is 11:38

Do you go into the room and out of the hall to look around the storeroom, or not? Right now, no one has made any noise to attract attention, but you should decide quickly what the next step is.

Time is 11:38
(OOC)
Do you go into the room and out of the hall to look around the storeroom, or not? Right now, no one has made any noise to attract attention, but you should decide quickly what the next step is.

PBEM, Episode 14 - Hall and Kobold Library
FOURTEEN
(I/C)
"Good fighting everyone,” Abraxas said with an infectious grin. “That was fun. Let's see what booty abounds in this Kobold Cave." He grabbed one of the kobolds and proceeded to shake it violently, its limbs flailing about as he twisted it, shook it, and turned it upside down to shake it again. Little bits of bone began to rain out of the kobold’s clothing, falling to the ground.
"Thanks Abraxis,” Lyra said. “Aine knows we probably would have killed it eventually but you stepping in was much appreciated." She walked past Wyn to the cabinet while the elf made his way to the catty corner bookcase.
“Mon ami,” he said, looking at Kovid. “You look for secret doors, oui?”
“Aye,” the dwarf answered. “Aren’t any.”
Wyn chuckled, “I am sure at first glance it would appear to be so, but if I were to ‘ide a secret place, behind this shelf would make the most sense. Can you hold shelf while I climb? Den I check for other secrets.”
Kovid frowned. “Sure I can hold it while you climb, but we can also just slide it aside.” He gave the elf a pointed glance. “Unless you prefer to do things the difficult way?”
“No, no. I just was looking to make as little noise as possible, I am sure you be t’inkin’ that a good idea, no?”
“Sure, it is,” Kovid replied, lifting one end of the shelf and crab walking it out to make it easier to step behind. “But sometimes it’s easier to remove an obstacle than go around it.”
“That is a very dwarven way of thinkin, Dwarfreind.” He patted Kovid on the shoulder and moved past to look at the corner of the room.
Kovid pursed his lips and muttered, barely loud enough for Lannis to overhear, the Magic User thumbing through the 2 tomes, “If anyone is to find a secret door in the stonework, it won’t be the elf!"
While all this was going on, Brendon made his way to the desk on the far side of the room. The drawer was closed and a casual look showed that it was locked – and from the pry and gouge marks around it, someone had tried to open it in the past but failed. Squatting low, he moved some of the stained paper and crushed ink wells aside, and rifled through his thieves tool to find the right set of picks to open the lock.
By the time Abraxas was done looking through the kobolds, he found 1 LEATHER NECKLACE (3) with 3 elf ears on it, about 15 finger long bits of bone the kobolds were using as fasteners, and on one of them, a stained small folded pouch with 5 CINNAMON STICKS (0) in it that it appeared the kobolds were eating.
Meanwhile Lyra had gone through the cabinet slowly and with care (Wis >10, no roll needed) and found many torn and useless sets of clothes, a spot where up to two kobolds were using the cabinet as a nest behind the clothes, and in one pair of pants, a folded bit of prayer cloth with markings to Maestro, the pagan god of music, with 10 INCENSE CONES (10)
After some time both Kovid (Search Secret Door: Yellow 6), and Wyn (Search Secret Door: Orange 4) emerged behind the shelf satisfied that besides dust, there was no secret doors back there. With that, Abraxas, Kovid, and Wyn stacked the dead kobolds behind the shelf before lifting it up and putting it back in place. Wyn nodded back at the door, “I’ll go back there to listen and see if’n anyone else be a comin’.” (No listen check needed at this time)
By this time Brendon had worked the lock of the desk drawer (<Open Locks: Red 17) and with a satisfied click, managed to unlock it. Sliding it back he could see it had some useless quills, some dried and crumbling sponge, 60 COPPER PIECES, 1 FANCY SILVER MIRROR (10) worth (Thief, Int >12, no roll) 25 Gold Pieces, and a rolled up scroll. He opened it up and it was a CLERIC SCROLL of DETECT EVIL (1st level, 120’ range direction looked, duration: 6 turns).
Lyra took the scroll (Add Scroll: Detect Evil to sheet) with thanks. At this point, while Lannis was still reading the two books, Brendon, Abraxas, and Kovid began the laborious project of taking apart the kobold warren of tables and chairs, Lyra drew out her club and was watching the process intently in case there was another kobold hidden in there.
It was hard work but Abraxas (<Str +2 bonus, Blue 7), Brendon (>Str +2 bonus, Red 12) and Kovid (<Str +2 bonus, yellow 11) managed to take the structure apart with little issue. In the detritus they found 50 COPPER PIECES, 1 sorry looking and falling apart Feather Duster, 10 EDIBLE MUSHROOMS, and 1 HAND DRUM (5).
And finally, Lannis (=Int, Pink 18) was able to tell that the two tomes were the quartermaster record books for Halgafar’s Castle here in Acreage. And although it was written in elven, Lannis was able to read it, skim through, and come to the conclusion that there was little of interest to be had now. Except for one part where the Ispan’s Headmaster had commented about a panic room where if the Castle was even under a magic assault and the Ispan and / or the Arcanist were ever slain, the Scriptorium would dump anyone who tried to plunder it into an oil filled pit that would then go up in flame.
And there was a small map about it as well!
The party divided up the coins (Brendon and Abraxis add 19 Copper pieces, everyone else add 18 Copper pieces) and except for the Cleric Scroll that Lyra now has, would discuss what items to keep from the found piles. And then knowing the hall is currently clear, would discuss where to go next – NORTH down the hall with 3 doors on the left, and 1 on the right (noise coming from the 2nd on the left) and the corridor still kept going – or back to the ENTRANCE Room and try the other hall that had 4 different walking points.

PBEM, Episode 13 - Hall and Kobold Library
THIRTEEN
(I/C)
Slinging the gore off his sword, Abraxis shouted to Kovid, “Dah Smell, it's how you say, gross?? ¿Si, porque no? These Koboldeses smell gross? Die Koboldeses!!"
Kovid dodged another thrust from the kobold he was fighting, quipping back, “And you thought they smelled bad on the outside, Abraxas!” while beating at the one attacking him.
Lyra skipped backwards, trying to get away from the Kobold menacing her when Lannis slammed into it from behind, his quarterstaff knocking it forward and causing it to stumble before turning around to face the Magic User. “Foul creature, you dare approach me? The insolence of this vermin is unbelievable!” He swung his staff surely and with great arcing swings (<+1 to hit, Pink 6) and although attracted the ankle biters attention, failed to do more than buffet the creature wildly.
Taking advantage of its attention elsewhere, Lyra loaded up another stone and let it fly (<+3 to hit, White 6) but this one missed by inches and clattered into the pile of tables and debris in the corner. Wyn charged into the fight from the side, joining Lannis in harrying the kobold who was now beset on 3 sides and visibly crying (<+3 to hit, Orange 6) as it somehow managed to avoid getting a killing blow.
Menawhile Kovid managed to stomp on his kobold’s foot, pinning it briefly in place for his war hammer to arc over his head and (>+2 to hit, Yellow 17) smash it down on the dogfaced foe, (1d8+1 Damage, Blue 4: 5 Damage and killed!) crushing its skull and drawing a satisfied grunt from the bristling dwarf.
Not to be outdone, Brendon redoubled his efforts, sword dancing up and around, slicing, cutting, thrusting (>+1 to hit, Red 18) until he got a solid blow across the kobold’s neck (1d6 Dam, Red 6 and killed!) where it gurgled on its life blood and fell over.
Abraxis, seeing the dwarf and thief finish off theirs, turned back to the kobold Wyn, Lyra, and Lannis was assaulting and shouldered his way in, 3’ of sharpened steel plunging into the kobold’s lung through its armpit (>+5 to hit, Blue 11) and then ripping through the other side, (1d8+2 Damage, Blue 2: 4 Damage and killed!) putting the last of them down.
Feeling great for their efforts but concerned over the length of the fight and who might have heard, Wyn(>Hear Noise, Orange 12) and Lannis (>Hear Noise, Pink 14) took up position near the door and waited, listening hard while the rest of the group fanned out and searched, Abraxis wiping his sword clean before taking up position near the Magic User and the Elf. After some time they felt comfortable that nothing was out there and with the door closed, the sounds of combat did not attract any unwanted attention.
Kovid after giving the walls a solid once over and seeing the way the kobolds were behaving (Search Secret Door: Yellow 4) was pretty sure there were no secret passages out of the room. Lyra looked high and low for her thrown rocks (White 6) but was only able to find one in the chamber that would be usable (total sling stones – 8).
And lastly, continuing where he left off earlier, Brendon gave the bookcase that was catty corner a solid look over (<Wis +2 bonus, Red 5) where discovered that even though the shelf seemed devoid of tomes, there were two of them that had fallen behind the case, very dusty and there for 30 years, but still viable. He dragged them into the light and Lannis’ eyes grew wide.
Time Now is 11:18
There are 5 dead kobolds in this room, and to look at if interested still the SOUTH wall BOOKCASE, the PILE OF TABLES AND CHAIRS the kobolds were using as a warren, the CLOSED CABINET where a kobold had been hiding, and the DESK on the north wall that had not been looked at and had 1 DRAWER on it closed with a keyhole but no key.
And of course you can just leave.
