PBEM - Episode 241. Secret Doors and Vaults.

TWO HUNDRED FORTY ONE

(I/C)

“Hang tight, Snake Snack,” Brendon said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the elves trapped the safe room. Give me a few to look things over.” The Scout walked in the room, eyes peeled, and started on the north end, sweeping south and around (<Find Traps, Red 07), ending up at the chest and table. Everyone was patient as he looked about, waiting.

“Ok,” he said. “Room is clear, nothing doing.”

“Safe room, bingo,” Kovid said with a smile. “Thanks to Arik wherever he is. I bet we won’t find a safer place to rest.”

“Indeed,” Brendon nodded. He pointed to the table, “Chest though…hmmm…the ‘keyhole’? It’s fake. The entire lock mechanism is a latch keeping it closed, but the keyhole itself is fake. Stick anything in there and I believe poison needle or gas comes out. So whomever is opening this box do it facing away, just in case.”

“How do we open it, then?” Lannis asked.

“We’ll have to figure it out. So come on in and look around, ok?”

"At de risk of stretchin dis stereotype... sacré bleu! Let us check de place out shall we?” He walked over to the wall, giving the bow and arrows a serious once over.

"I'm going try and decipher the writing on the table,” Lannis muttered, “if you wouldn't mind giving me a minute to do so before you all start *touching* things."

“Sure, sure.” They waited a minute or two while the Magic User walked around the table, bending low and looking at the scrollwork until he stood up with a smile (no roll needed). “Just design work. Nothing weird here.” He looked at the chest and sighed. “And since I’m here.”

Lyra stepped up next to Lannis and shook her head, “This thing looks... ominous. I wouldn’t touch it until we have a detect magic to burn - make sure it’s not magically trapped. Hey, Brendon, you sure it’s physically trapped.”

“Yep, lock is fake. Hasp opens somehow.” He was standing with Wyn at the wall, cloak, armor, bow, and arrows there.

Kovid was walking the room, knocking lightly and looking around for secret doors or passages (no roll needed) but the dwarf felt that a third secret door was most likely overkill and nothing else was found anyway.

Abraxas was running his hands over the cloak and shrugging, glancing at the chest that Lyra and Lannis was examining.  "I dont like the look of este" he said pointing. "Es este el corazon de el madre de Cordlun? Is this the heart?!?!? And donde es the crown? La Corona?”

“Don’t know if the heart and or the crown is in here,” Lannis mused. “Not sure if this is the right…place? This is more of a bug out room I think.”

“Explain,” Kovid said.

“Elven Ispan gets a warning or whatever to go, activates the 6 red warriors, and escapes through here. Get to this room and what do we have? Chest of goods, spare armor, bow, arrows, and two barrels that most likely have wine and or food in them.”

“Hmm,” Abraxas grunted, “Have a point. For us though, this seems like a decent spot to rest too. But the secret passage may be better.”

“Too dusty.”

“Den we kin clean it,” Wyn suggested, bow in hand and looking it over (<Int check, +2 elf, Orange 12) and smiling.

Abraxas had finished his brief look at the cloak (>Int check, Blue 20) leaving it there and heading to the barrels. “Seems to be too light, not warm, and most likely and elf thing. Do your oyos majik see anything Señors Korky y Wenkys?”

“Working it Roadblock.”

“What do we do about este?” he pointed at the chest again.

“Wow, working it we said,” Lannis repeated with poor humor and a grimace of pain.

“Sheesh,” Abraxas replied with a grumble. “Well, whatever is in there, we take it with us as a... uh...como dices... insurance? To barter with Cortlurf if needed. Yo no se what is better, take it or leave it. What do you think, amigos?"

"Abraxas, my friend,” Lannis replied with a sigh, “That dragon does not want to barter with us. Full stop."

Taking his turn at the cloak and pulling it off the hook to better look at it, Brendon added, “Ay, Dios mío! I’m sure the dragon will seem sincere when it says whatever it says BUT we are not making friends with it.”

"Not so much a barter,” the Fighter shrugged, “as more of a "threaten to run our silvered weapons through el corazon, splitting it into many pieces" sort of deal. Maybe it just gives us an extra 3 second head start?"

Wyn was finished with his look over the bow. “Well, dis is a Heartswood bow and a vera good one.” He pulled it back with a rictus smile. “De pull on it is surprsin’ly strong. So much so dat de bow will shoot de arrow further den one would expect while usin’ it.” (Bow has +10’/+20’/+30’ range increment (60/120/180)). “I gonna check out de arrows next.”

Abraxas had given each barrel a few thumps and a shake. “Well, THIS one sloshes and I can smell de vino.” He went to the second and also shifted it. “THIS one has something solid inside, and I can feel el peso shifting around inside.”

“Drink and food?” Lannis suggested. “Fits with the bug out theme.”

After taking out the arrows, both the black and the white ones, Wyn felt pretty good (<Int +2 elf, Orange 4). “Hokay. Dere are 5 of dem and I would be sharin’ most likely wit’ du Lac.”

“Thanks,” Brendon replied.

“De black arrows de ‘ave a strong magnet feel to dem, like de lodestone. But not on all de time. When dey are loaded up and fired, de will drag ANUDDER arrow, normal iron headed one, from whoever quiver it were be dat shot it!” (fire a black arrow, and a normal arrow fires from your quiver as well – both get a to hit roll)

“Very nice.”

“Tanks!” Wyn then held up the silver and white fletching one. “Dees have a powerful enchantment on dem making dem more likely ta hit and more likely ta do more damage.” (white fletching arrows are +2 to hit and damage)

“Very very nice.”

Lannis and Lyra had spent some time looking over the chest (<Wis check, White 8…>Wis check, Pink 17), the Magic User getting progressively more frustrated. “I don’t see how to open it. Hinges are full piano and crimped. Stick anything in there and boom, poison. And I don’t know how to make it work.”

The Cleric had gotten closer to the face, making Lannis very nervous. She traced a light touch along the face until she ended at the wide eyes. “Circular. Each of them.”

“Good job, know your circles.”

“Dick. They are also slightly recessed all around, extra effort made on it.” She tapped her chin. “See here,” she leaned in closer, “There is a space around the entire eye. They are buttons.”

“So you push the eyes to open it?”

She sat back and smiled, “It fits. Easy enough to do if you’re the Ispan and don’t have the key with you. And it deters anyone else who thinks it is a keyhole. Press both eyes at the same time and I’m sure the chest opens.”

Lannis looked around at the group. “So…is someone other than me going to push the demented chest lock possible poison eye latch?”

Time now is Day 6, 5:12 PM

(OOC)

Nice doing. Chest, Armor, Cloak, and Hammer/bell still to do. Also possibly open the two barrels if you want. Assuming you are taking Heartswood Bow, Wyn? Breakdown of magic arrows between you and Brendon between double shot and +2’s?
