PBEM, Episode 151 - Hall, Swords, Levels

 "Ding" for the elf. :)

ONE HUNDRED FIFTY ONE

(I/C)

The group did not appear to be enamored with the chance of assaulting the wolf at this time so taking a cue from Brendon and Wyn, they turned about and started heading south and away. "I tink we learn enough bout dis hall fer today,” Wyn said softly, “Messin' wit de wolf could bring de ire ov de beekeeper... en while we cen take de wolf, it'd be best to limit our funnel of encounters based on de current state of de party's health.”

“You see?” Lyra hissed, “That could have been our bones he’s chewing on if he had heard us!”

Nodding, Brendon popped his last Cinnamon Stick and proceeded to chew it quietly.

The group walked with care (WMC: Red/Black 4) everyone had their eyes peeled as they made their way up the steps, past Travis’ room, and then back to the upper hall where Abraxas quietly shut the door as we had found it. From there we turned right and proceeded along the quiet halls to the hall with the Scriptorium, and then eventually through the winding hall until we arrived back at the Butchery.

Once inside we shut the door and barred it, the entire group relaxing noticeably on doing so. “The stress,” Lannis moaned, Leaning his staff against the wall and shaking with relief.

“I’d like to take a look around a bit more in there,” Kovid suggested, pointing to the Butcher’s former chambers. Abraxas’ eyes perked up and nodded his agreement. “I noticed some unused beeswax candles that might be useful to take with us,” the dwarf continued, “maybe some connection to the Beekeeper that might help us. That tapestry looked interesting as well.”

"I ‘gree,” Wyn said, “In ‘ddition, as many 'ave mentioned already, when we are fresh it probably be best to take out de Guardians en maybe de "Bad Zombies" tomorrow. Fer now, let’s take to explorin' deze rooms wit a Detecting of Magic to see what can be seen. Monseir Offop, ye feelin’ up ta accompany moi to lend yer arcanic knowledge to de search?"

“Ugh,” Lannis groaned, “You want me to help you search that She Hulk’s room? Are you out...of...your...", his voice petered out when he sees Abraxas glancing his way, expression stoic and fixed. "Yeah, sure, sounds like a plan to me. Then we can finally eat some hot food. Being mauled to death by a giant wolf tomorrow would seem like such a waste if I didn't get one more hot meal.”

“Tres bien.”

The party entered and proceeded to look around mundanely at first. The chamber was still neat although it was apparent that the Butcher had taken her personal belongings and clothes, however the room still smelled like sandalwood and jasmine. In the far corner was a bed (large enough for 2 or 3 party members should they want to use and share) that had been extended along the base to support the Butcher’s larger frame and body. The rumpled bed coverings were pink and had been stitched together to make larger sheets and blankets. Her pillows had tassels and ruffles on them as well. There was a stout iron stove on the west wall, chimney going up to the ceiling, 3 assorted pans and pots hanging from hooks near it. The table was a bit larger and had a table cloth and some wine bottles on it. Tapestries were on the wall showing scenes from the life of an elven minstrel. Decorative candle holders were about the chamber with at least half a dozen unlit beeswax candles. A couch was on the east wall and the table had a stout wooden long bench to sit at. There was a stone heating brazier filled with rocks in the southwest corner currently keeping the room warm and comfortable.

The group poked and prodded, lifted and looked in things. Brendon was exhausted and sat on the couch with an audible groan, relaxing, running his hand on the fabric absently looking for seams or pockets. Lyra had made her way to the back end of the room and gave the bed a wrinkled nose glance using her club to move the duvet cover and blanket edges. On one of the posts was a wide and sturdy red bit of long linen the Butcher would use to tie up her hair. On seeing it, she grunted to Abraxas, “Ahem.”

“Si?” She pointed it out and the Fighter’s eyes lit up, climbing over the bed and blankets to untie the ribbon and stare at it wistfully. “Gracias, Libra,” he said, wrapping the ribbon around the Scythe and tying it in place.

“Any time, you old softie,” she said.

Other things the group had turned up besides plate and clayware for 3, was a cask under the table that had about 3 gallons of fresh water in it (would hold 5), and the 4 bottles on the table were each about half full. Investigation showed that 2 of them had a rather acrid tasting Goblin wine in it, and the other two had a sweet tasting Elven wine. The wood bin on the side of the stove had enough dried wood to cook up to three times on it, the total number of slowburn beeswax candles in the room were 6, and on the side of the Brazier were the word “Rowena” in elvish.

At this point, mundane searching finished, Wyn held his hands up and summoned a swath of magic ending with the words, “Tegere Arcanus.” A wave of energy flew out from the elf who proceeded to sweep the room slowly. The BRAZIER glowed with orange sparks of magic, and then the TAPESTRY also glowed as well. However, to the party’s surprise, while panning around the room Brendon, Lyra, and Wyn all had a bit of magic on them that they hadn’t noticed earlier!

Rooting around all three of them eventually produced the white and clean bandages that we had found earlier today – each one of them glowing with magical light. “Monsieur Offop?” Wyn asked.

“Not sure,” he said.

“Wait,” Lyra interrupted (Cleric Wis>12), “may I look at them all for a bit?”

“Yeah, you do that,” Lannis said, looking over the Brazier and Tapestry. The Magic User and the Elf conferred for a bit (Magic User Int >12) before Wyn walked around the Butchery and then the Freezer to see if anything else was magical (the entire Freezer had a soft magical glow coming from it, which was not surprising to the group) before returning to the Bedroom to learn what had been discovered.

“Ok,” Lannis said, “The Brazier uses no fuel that I can see and is powered by an older elven enchantment.” He laid his hand on the side of it and whispered “Warm,” in elvish. The rocks began to glow and the room quickly began to warm up from the effect. “Cool,” he whispered in elvish and the glow ended and the warmth coming from the Brazier ended.

“Ok, That’s neat!” Kovid said.

“You like that?” Lannis asked, heading to the Tapestry. It showed the elven minstrel and scenes from her life. Laying his hand on it, he swept the bottom out and let it flap – and the scene rippled as the trees moved as if in a blowing wind, the elf’s hair moved, her dress, and the smell of sandalwood grew stronger again. He went to the other tapestry and repeated the action, flipping the bottom edge of it and the room shuddered and the scent of jasmine filled the air, followed by the bed swiftly becoming cleaned and made, and what little dirt the group had tracked in blew away.

“That’s what I want in my house,” Lannis said, “so that my golem maid doesn’t have to work too hard. Good magics to make that happen.” He looked around. “Rowena was the Ispan Halgafar’s Arch-mage according to the book I had read, and this was her original chamber. The Butcher just eventually moved in and got all the benefits for it.”

Lyra held up the bandages and spoke next. “Ok, we found these and I didn’t get a chance to look them over, thinking it was just surprisingly clean lengths of gauze. But these are Sclepian Bandages.”

“Wot are those?” Wyn asked.

“God of Healing. Likes snakes.”

“Seems weird,” Brendon said.

She shrugged, continuing. “Anyway, if these bandages are applied to a hurt person by a Cleric before rest, it will improve the amount of healing that person gets during the night.”

Kovid’s ears perked up. “How much?”

Lyra smiled. “Double.”

The group all appeared to be thrilled by it. “One use only then?” Kovid asked.

Lyra shook her head. “Nope, they have to be cleaned the next day.” She looked around the room. “The bandages are tough and will resist ripping, warping, and tearing. But they need something more ‘powerful’ than soap and water.” She smiled. “They need to be cleaned in sulfur and water.”

“A, fucking, ha!” Lannis snapped his fingers.

“Let’s sit and eat for now,” Kovid suggested, “We have a room to do it in, the lantern is about empty so we can use a candle or two, there’s an over right there, and we can discuss what happens next.”

"Alrighty amigos,” Abraxas offered with a wide smile, “why don't we get some carne on the grill, eat finely for a bit, and get a good long rest. I can take the watch secundo again. I feel so invigorated, it will be hard dormir too long at once anyway. I can't wait to como dices.... take it to them... those Corgflin Guardians. Maybe we finish exploring the rest of this first floor - puerto past the Guardians, and then past the Classroom, before we head towards the stairs again. Then we can take out El Lobo and El Beeskipper."

“What do you say we tackle those Guardians first thing in the morning?” Kovid suggested. “Butcher mentioned that retrieving the effigy, the statuette we saw, would be important to defeating Corfard. If we take too long and he figures out we were in this area, he might try to hide it. I’d hate to miss the opportunity to weaken him. The thought of facing a dragon is intimidating enough... I assume we’ll need every advantage we can get to defeat him!”

Lyra nodded, “I second all of that. We have a good amount of time right now - best to utilize it to get a really good rest in before taking on those zombies.” She went to the oven and started loading wood and kindling on the bottom, “Let me get this lit and we can eat something hot for a change.”

“So much meat in the Freezer,” Kovid offered, getting a series of nods from the party.

As the dwarf went off to go and check the freezer for a good cut of meat to bring back to eat, Wyn turned to Lannis as asked, “Monseiur Offop... do you tink dat addin' de Read Languages spell to yer spellbook would 'elp wit de research you be doing with de Scriptorium books? Just wanted to remind you we 'ad such a scroll.”

Before the Magic User could answer Wyn’s eyes grew wide and he gasped, “Ahhh!” smiling and looking energized and empowered as he did the first day we left Specularum.
