PBEM, Episode 90 - Kill Grilljax, There and Back Again

NINETY

(I/C)
Stepping against the north wall, Lannis was looking behind him, avoiding the zombie kobolds, and then trying to make it to the far south corner, calling out, “Hilva! Avlih! Stop! Deactivate! Stand down!” Hoping that the stone statues would stop, but from the pounding against the weakening doorframe, nothing seemed to have any effect. In frustration, he used the back end of his staff to end the life of one of the sleeping kobolds, slamming it into the anklebiter’s head twice for good measure.

Wyn also veered north, giving the kobolds a wide berth, "Hm... I do appreciate de craftsmanship en spell work on doze statues... even if dey be tryin' to pound us flat. Mayhaps we use dem to our advantage, oui?" He too drove his sword point into one of the kobold’s necks, twisting it and killing it in the process. He stopped in front of the dead Grilljax and shook his head as he flipped the dead shaman over his shoulder and turned to the south door.

“Abraxas, Let me get this one off you!” Kovid barreled his shield into one of the zombies nearest the south door, hammer working overtime (>+3 to hit, Yellow 12) as he beat it against the kobold (1d8+2 Damage: Yellow 6 – 8 Damage!) breaking its forearm, shattering its ribs, and smashing its neck out of alignment – but the undead refused to relent.

“As soon as there’s a free space, I’m turning them,” Lyra announced, struggling against the zombie she was fighting with.

Brendon meanwhile gave the fountain a fast look as well as the area around Grilljax’ throne (<Half Int +2 thief, Red 6) seeing an iron chest, latched and locked with a bloody looking barbed lock, just under the fur edge of the chair. “Thank you little lizard,” he hissed, picking up the heavy box (100) and then pushing off the area and making his way to the south door. Seeing that it opened into this room, he leaned his weight against it, listening quickly (>Hear Noise -10%, Red 41) but unable to hear anything on the other side. “I fucking hate surprises.”

As the door behind him splintered and shook, two more K-800’s in front of him, Abraxas sheathed his sword and stepped north, grabbing the Cleric and throwing her to his right. "Away we go Señorita, vamonos.” He kept a grip on her as he kicked and spun his way through the zombies (<Free hit +4, Steel 3) and then barreled into Jowass still held and unmoving, dumping the hammer holding kobold onto his shoulder. “This 'Hoeass' should know how to turn off the statues. For now we move, and you stay behind me.” The second zombie also swung as the larger man shouldered his way around to the west end of the room (<Free hit +4, Steel 4) just ahead of the scrabbling claws. To Lyra he added, “If you can do something, do it from back there. Where the hell is Señor Ladkes?"

With 5 of the party members on the west side of the room and 2 of the zombies turning to engage them, the statues on the other side of the door (Black 20 – Critical! Max Damage – 6) tore into the wooden frame and portal and then burst the main support beam asunder, bashing the door in.

“Now! Now!”

Gathering her Goddess’ strength about her, Lyra held aloft her holy symbol and intoned, “Goddess Aine! Sweet Mother of Summer! Turn these bastards! TURN!” (2d6 HD: White 5/5 – 10 HD) A burst of radiant red intoned light blew out from Lyra in a 30’ long arc in front of her, blowing grit, dust, dirt, hair, and clothes around on an unseen wind. The rippling wave slammed upon all three zombies drawing a rictus grin on their stoic faces and then a high pitched whine as they looked around the room to escape – and seeing the now burst open door in front of them.

And they fled.

Kovid (>Dex, Yellow 16) was unable to get fully out of the way in time as he tried to duck to the alcove and was buffeted and trampled by the fleeing zombie closest to him (Take 2 Damage). “Don’t hit them!” Lyra called out. “If you do, the turn ends!”

However, the door was blocked by 2 7’ tall warrior statues trying to get in and kill the party and 3 zombie undead strengthened kobolds were trying to get out. A bottleneck occurred (Combated Str checks: K800 beat number by -1, -15, -15 for -31 vs Statues beat number by -2, -4 for -6: Kobolds win) and the statues were actually STOPPED from entering the room in the shoving match that occurred between the two parties. The group did note the statues did not use their weapons to attack the zombies, merely tried to push them out of the way.

This delay was enough to keep the statues from getting into the room for this round.

(Initiative: Party Steel 2 vs Enemy Red/Black 1). “Let’s go, Roadblock!” Lannis barked to Brendon who was holding the door closed. “Let’s go!”

Time now is 7:47
(OOC)
2 of the 6 kobolds have been CDG’ed, we have Grilljax (dead) on Wyn, Jowass (held) on Abraxas, zombies are turned for the next 3d6 rounds, and 2 7’ tall stone and crystal statues coming in next round. Guys lucked out on not getting hit for real this round except some buffeting on Kovid.
